In response to our recent post on looking fashionable in sports apparel, we received a request for a special dad feature and thought, why  not? I mean, his style can certainly affect your style. And if you’re working so hard on yours then maybe we should get him polished up a bit too…

Dear Mommy Stylist,

Your stuff is great. Thanks for helping all the sports moms out here look good. Maybe you could consider a dad feature. Some of those guys need some real help!

Okay, ladies, we hear you. Now that you are looking so fine out there on the sports field, it’s becoming more and more obvious that your significant other is cramping your style. If you’re lucky, your husband is probably dressed something like this:

If you’re not so lucky, it’s probably more like one of these:

We know what you’re really looking for, a sharp dressed man who really knows how to show off his team spirit. Am I right? Allow me to present the sports dad of your dreams. Drumroll, please! Dum, da, da, dum . . .

Just kidding, but you’ve got to give him props for trying. Seriously, though, we’ve scoured the internet and found the true sports dad of your dreams and I will present him to you in just a moment. Before we get started however, I want to throw out a warning. Not yet having sports-aged children or participating much in sports myself, I turned to the men of my acquaintance for some help on this touchy subject. I say “touchy” because that is just what it is for most men. It’s hard enough to convince a lot of guys to dress nicer, but when it comes to sports it’s near impossible – at least without a fight.

Men usually dress the way they do for sports games for one of two reasons:

1. The outfit they are wearing is their “lucky game day outfit.” They were dressed exactly this way when the team had their first win; their kid hit their first ball; scored their first touchdown; etc. If they change it, they’ll lose the luck. Guys tend to be superstitious about sports.

2. It’s comfortable this way and takes them two minutes to get dressed. They don’t see the point in getting all dressed up to go sit at a dirty, dusty field for three hours. They don’t want to waste the time it takes to roll up their sleeves, tuck in their shirt, or put on a belt. This is the way they are dressing, they like it. You should like it, too. Hey, at least they’re wearing clothes and don’t look like the “not so lucky” examples.

Now that our little disclaimer has been said, I completely agree with you. I would love to see more sports guys dressed like this:

Get the Look:

Look #1: Perfect for heading straight from the office to the big game.

• Team hat.

• Colored button down shirt (maybe in the team’s color), a couple of buttons popped, layered under a grey V-neck sweater.

• Fitted jeans (dark blue or black) with black belt.

• Clean tennis shoes in good condition.

• If he’s into jewelry, Ashton sports a chain necklace which works well with the look.

Look #2: Relaxed and stylish for a weekend at the ballpark.

• Team t-shirt or jersey, layered over a contrasting white or colored t-shirt. Roll sleeves and tuck in.

• Team hat.

• Fitted blue jeans with belt.

• Clean tennis shoes in good condition.

• Accessorize with a wristwatch.

Good luck, ladies. You’ve got your work cut out for you. If your fairy godmother bails and your man doesn’t magically turn into Ashton Kutcher, try focusing on how good you look standing next to him. Or, move to the other side of the court and pretend not to know him. Oh, and if there are any single dads out there looking to meet a cute, stylish sports mom, we highly recommend the Ashton Look.
