Let’s talk about socks for a minute. Colored or patterned socks are an often overlooked accessory that moms could easily take advantage of. Children can’t tear them off of you, they won’t show dirt like white will, and if your outfit is neutral or monochromatic, they can add a little excitement and a lot of style. At prices starting from about $1, they are also a great accessory for those on a conservative “I don’t want to spend a ton of money on something fun that can be easily ruined” budget. You already have to put socks on in the morning, especially in a cold or rainy climate, so what is the difference between pulling on a pair of bold, playful ones or a pair of plain, neutral ones? Not much, if you know how to wear them fashionably.

Today, I’m going to show you a fail-proof way to wear those cute socks that you have stashed away. You know, those socks that you purchased because they were on clearance for a price that you just couldn’t pass up . . . but never wore out, except disguised under jeans and tall boots, because you just couldn’t think of a way to wear them that wouldn’t look laughable. Pull them out and let’s get started.

The key to this look is to keep the basic outfit neutral or monochromatic so that the socks stand out. Mixing fun socks with neutral pieces creates the most options since there are few chances for garish clashing. Remember, as with any new look, the trick to pulling it off is to act like you mean it and be confident that you look amazing. If you say that you are going to show off your socks and then only roll your pants so that a sliver is showing- it’s going to seem like a mistake. So, roll those cuffs up, lift your chin and strut your stuff. You’re fun and you know it, why shouldn’t your outfit show it?

Get the Look:

Selvedge Boyfriend Skinny Jeans, Painted Blue ($88/Levi’s): Roll the leg of the jeans up to just above the ankle bone in shallow rolls to make a narrow cuff, like this.

Journee Collection Sierra Oxford Shoes (sale $59.99, reg. $69.99/Kohl’s): Kohl’s offers free shipping on orders over $50, plus they are currently giving $10 in Kohl’s Cash (a coupon redeemable for $10 off your next Kohl’s purchase) for every $50 spent in store, online, or at the kiosk.

B Chevrons Socks  ($5/Sock Dreams): Sock Dreams offers free U.S. shipping year round!

Mirror Bird Tee ($30/Topshop): We love that the tee is simple but has a fun element. It’s neither too fitted nor too relaxed, so it is flattering for most body types and is an easy way to hide a tummy. We also like that the print can be covered with the cardigan and will add an extra surprise when the cardigan comes off.

Grey Knit Hat ($24/Topshop): Topshop offers free shipping on orders over $50. So, if you order the tee and the hat you’re set. Plus, they offer hassle-free returns if you are unhappy with your order.

Versatility Cardigan ($45/JoozieCotton): This cardigan can be worn open or buttoned asymmetrically. Allow time for shipping, as this item will be shipped from Thailand.

Pyramid Stud Bracelet Set  ($8.80/Forever 21): Forever 21 is a great place to shop for affordable and stylish accessories.

Zigzag Triangle Necklace ($5.80/Forever 21)

Chaps Cross-Body Bag (sale $48.30, reg. $69.00/Kohl’s): This bag is perfectly matched for a relaxed and comfortable look. It is a great size for carrying the essentials without being too burdensome for moms who have children or a lot of other gear to tote around.

Wear It: running errands, dropping off/picking up the kids from school, play date, casual lunch, coffee pick-me-up, movie night with the hubby, chauffeuring/hanging out with the kids.
