First, a quick note to readers: As you know, one of the goals here at The Mommy Stylist is to make fashion quick and easy for moms. To that end, we’ve decided that when we provide outfit suggestions we will make all attempts to stick to one store for the entire outfit so that you don’t have to register/sign in over and over for each different piece. Now, we may not always be able to do this but when we can, we will.

Yes, Heidi Klum is a supermodel but you have to admit the lady knows how to make casual look fantastic. There is no denying that her super simple outfit in the photo above oozes effortless style. And it’s not just because she is tall and thin.

It’s universally flattering – and comfortable

This outfit will flatter just about any body shape or size. The long, loose top skims over the tummy and the butt camouflaging any imperfections while the leggings hold everything in and allow ease of movement.

You can’t go wrong with all black

It looks like the back of Heidi’s top is white but for our non-supermodel purposes we’ll stick with all black which is always slimming and sophisticated. The reason this outfit is special as opposed to just a plain ‘ol black on black ensemble is because of the details – the uneven bottom of the shirt and the accessories. These are the things to look for when shopping – pieces that are just a little different from the norm. Picture this outfit with a plain boxy tee. It wouldn’t be half as cute. And always, always accessorize. It is the easiest way to make it look like you’ve actually put some thought into getting dressed and it adds A LOT of style.

Now, let’s discuss those Birkenstocks

I have always hated (and I mean HATED) Birkenstocks. I was mortified this year when they suddenly became fashionable. But, I have to admit, Heidi pulls them off with this outfit. Besides the fact that they are supposed to be incredibly comfortable, they actually look, dare I say, cute. If you are with me on this then go out and grab yourself a pair. Sure, the’re a little pricey but they’re made very well and will last for years and years. If you just can’t bring yourself to do it, a cute pair of flat sandals will work just as well.

Now, let’s shop!

Armani Exchange AX2002 Gold/Brown Sunglasses ($85/Amazon): Good sunnies are worth the money (my eye doctor told me so) as they will protect your eyes better than a cheaper brand.

SJSP Sleeveless Various Printed Span Unbalance Tunic Top ($17.99/Amazon): If you’d prefer something with sleeves, try this.

Kenneth Cole New York Textured & Hammered Two Disc Pendant Necklace ($38/Lord & Taylor): It’s always worth it to pay a little extra for jewelry. I’ve bought many inexpensive pieces of jewelry only to find that the finish wears off very quickly making it unwearable. If it is something you think you’ll use over and over, dole out the extra dough. It doesn’t have to be hundreds of dollars but $30-$40 is pretty reasonable. Remember, if you wear it enough (which you should if you are heeding my advice above) it will pay for itself in no time.

Metal Bamboo Layered Bangle by Fashion Destination ($16.94/Amazon)

Hue Women’s Ultra Leggings with Wide Waistband ($23.90/Amazon): Great reviews. A wide waistband guarantees no roll-down. For a plus-size option try these which also got excellent reviews.

Birkenstock Original Arizona Birkibuc Regular width Soft-Footbed ($40-$70/Amazon)
