There are many outfit options for ankle boots (which, by the way, are defined in all kinds of ways, but to us, they’re boots that end just above the ankle). For fall, try them with tights and a skirt*, skinny pants/jeans, or rolled-up boyfriend jeans. Above and below, are some stylish, mom-appropriate outfits with boots of a similar length that would also work with the Rupert Bootie.
(*Wearing either solid or textured tights that are similar in color to your boots will elongate the legs making you look taller and slimmer. On the other hand, tights in a totally different hue are a fun way to add some color to your outfit and show your fashion know-how. Both are viable options.)

It’s parent’s weekend at your child’s college; you are so proud and excited that your baby has grown up and is pursuing his or her dreams at Big Name University. Showing support through your wardrobe is a given but how to do it without going overboard? You definitely don’t want to be the embarrassing cheerleader parent – decked out head to toe in school logos. (And please, just say no to mother/child matching hoodies.) Looking stylish and sophisticated but not overdressed is the goal. So, what should you wear?
Grown-Up College Spirit
The answer may be as easy as looking through your closet. Fall weather is starting to set in, so layers will be perfect for this occasion. Start with the basics – blue jeans and comfy shoes. Chances are you’ll be hiking all over campus and/or sitting in multiple lecture rooms hearing how you can help your child succeed and what to expect from their college curriculum. Comfort is key.
Try a layered look in the school’s colors. It won’t scream “Look at me! I’m the school’s biggest fan,” but it will let everyone know that you support your child and their school – stylishly.
The Finishing Touch
As the mom of a college student, you may have gone a little crazy the day the acceptance letter arrived, purchasing all kinds of University of Bright Kids apparel. Having read this article, you are now bummed that you don’t get to wear any of it while at the school. Not quite.
Look through all of that school paraphernalia and choose one item you’d really like to wear. A mascot necklace, cardigan with a small logo, or an emblematic knit hat are just enough to do the trick without going overboard.
Wear it Again
With a few adjustments (like sneakers instead of flats and a crossbody bag instead of a satchel), this look can also work for a sporting event, be it little league or the major leagues.
Shopping
University Emblem Knit Hat ($29.95/Fanatics): Keep warm and cozy on campus with this knitted cap. (Other university emblems available.)
University Emblem Headphones ($129.99/SolRepublic): These are the coolest emblematic headphones ever! At parent’s weekend, show your school pride by using them to listen to music, watch shows on your tablet during downtime, or while Skype-ing with your other kids at home. Just be sure to keep your eye on them; your college student may try to commandeer them. (Other university emblems available.)
Wristwatch ($19.99/Target): Be on time to all the scheduled events with this sporty wristwatch.
Scarf ($14.99/Target): An infinity scarf is an excellent way to add a chic third layer to the classic top and blazer look. The colors in this one are perfect for fall.
Blazer ($29.80/Forever 21): Keep warm with style in this sophisticated purple blazer.
Top ($22.99/Target): Although you can’t see it in our photo, the top of this tank is black which adds interest and will draw the eye up away from the waist – perfect for a pear shape. However, it will work with all figures.
Mid-rise Skinny Jeans ($31.99/6PM – free shipping!): Mid-rise jeans eliminate muffin top and gives the appearance of being slimmer. As an added bonus, they stay up (unlike their lower-cut counter parts) keeping you covered even if forced to sit on the school lawn.
Black Purse ($62.99/ModCloth): Enough space to fit everything you need for the day – wallet, phone, iPad, and water.
Chevron Flats ($35.99/6PM – free shipping!): Mixing patterns is a big trend right now. Show your style know-how by donning a pair chevron flats which compliment the scarf perfectly.

With the (choke! choke!) return of Birkenstocks to the fashion scene (yes, it’s true) I decided to seek out comfort shoes that also have some style. I have to admit I have seen a few outfits (including this one on Heidi Klum) that were somehow able to make Birkenstocks look cute. However, for those of you who just can’t bring yourselves to slip into a pair, we’ve rounded up some equally comfortable, yet infinitely more fashionable options.
Style and comfort can coexist
As a mom, comfort is key in being able to stand for extended periods of time, chase after little ones, get in and out of the car over and over and over, and run errands effectively. And for this, your style doesn’t have to suffer. We often feature on trend flat shoes in our articles, most at very reasonable prices. Today though, we’re going for the big guns. While these shoes may be pricier, they’ll most likely last and last and offer years of stylish comfort.
Why choose a neutral color?
We love colorful shoes as much as the next guy but for a mom, for everyday, a neutral tone works best for its ability to camouflage dirt and match with many outfits. This will make getting dressed quick and easy.
Now, let’s shop!
1. Born Alamid Boot ($175/Zappos – free shipping both ways!): We all know the name Born as being a leader in the comfort-shoe arena. And to add fashionable to that comfort is the icing on the cake. We love this super cool boot for daily wear. It’ll look great with skinny jeans/pants or leggings. Also available in black.
2. Tsubo Felecia Booties ($160/Zappos – free shipping both ways!): The not-too-high heel makes this bootie doable for everyday. Try it with skinny jeans/pants, boyfriend jeans, any length skirt, or even shorts. Dress up or down easily. Also available in charcoal suede.
3. OTBT Park Hills Flat ($30.99-$98.95/Amazon): An alternative to the traditional ballet flat, this edgy design comes in 17 different colors and patterns. Like Tsubo, OTBT shoes are known for their comfort; these come with a leather-covered, foam-cushioned footbed.
4. Born Gemini Boot ($220/Zappos – free shipping both ways!): Although the heel on this boot is fairly high, its thickness will help keep you stable and more comfy than a thin one. It will look great with skinny jeans/pants or a knee-length or shorter skirt/dress. Also available in black.
5. Born Halle Flats ($95/Zappos – free shipping both ways!): Who knew Born was on top of current trends? The pointy toe on these flats are all the rage so they’re perfect for the stylish mom. And they’ll work with just about any outfit. Also available in black, grey or bronze.
6. Born Crown Emie Boots ($$92.76 – $150.00 + free shipping/Amazon): Whoever’s designing for Born these days should get a raise. How gorgeous are these booties? And with Born’s commitment to comfort I can only imagine they feel good too.
7. Tsubo Galena Boots ($275/Tsubo): Yes, I know, these are quite pricey but in general, boots cost more than shoes. And, a knee-high black flat boot will keep you looking stylish for years. Additionally, the Tsubo brand is known for comfort; these come with an extra-cushioning memory foam insole so you can do everything you need to do while looking good and feeling good. Also available in grey here.
8. Born Ilisha Sneaker ($59.97 – $96.99/Amazon): I have a similar pair of sneakers but I wish I had gotten these instead as they are specifically made for comfort. Also available in blue, black, metallic gold or grey.
9. Tsubo Gylda Snake Flat ($149.95 + free shipping/Amazon): The perfect flat. The wedge provides a little height while the ankle strap and snakeskin pattern provide style. Love, love, love them! Also available in black here.
10. OTBT Rupert Bootie ($$124.99 – $154.97/Amazon): I am in love with these boots. A cushioned footbed offers comfort, the wedge adds stability and the color, buckle, and overall design make them super stylish. Also available in grey.

We all see outfits in magazines that we’d love to recreate but just don’t feel like we can pull them off. Well, “Fret not, fellow fashionistas. It’s possible!” Check out this style inspiration from two foodie sisters, founders of The New Potato. Danielle and Laura Kosann’s blog combines their passion for good food and Lucky lets us know the sisters also have a penchant for fashion.
The two distinct looks can take you to a work or lunch date. They’re also great for a more casual day running errands (farmer’s market anyone?) or a visit to the park with the kids. Whatever the occasion, you’ll feel fabulous and be the envy of the all the other moms.
Look 1
Denim Jacket ($69.95/The Gap): Denim is always a staple and has made a big splash this year. Invest in a stylish denim jacket, if you haven’t already. The ensemble pictured here showcases its versatility.
Crop Top ($9.95/H&M) over Blouse ($16.00/Kohl’s): Let’s face it. Not everyone is ecstatic about the crop top trend. The great news is, you can still incorporate this look with some easy layering tricks. Layers can be your friend especially as we transition into fall. They can add texture and depth while keeping you warm! Try this white crop top over a longer shirt or blouse.
Floral A-Line Skirt ($69.99/ModCloth): Nothing says femininity more than a floral A-line skirt. This high-waist midi covers the midsection, cinches the waist, and falls right below your knees. It can be dressed up or down and work for many occasions.
Accessories- Shoes ($39.95/DSW) and Bracelet($28.80/Nordstrom): The different textures and layers in this outfit keep the shoes and accessories simple. Ballet flats provide style and comfort. Throw on a great chunky bracelet and you’re set!
Look 2
Structured Cardigan ($12.49-$32.70/Amazon): The blue cardigan helps gives this laid back vibe a more tailored look.
Vertical Striped Tee (32.99/The Limited): Vertical stripes create the illusion of length. They are ideal for areas you want to appear slimmer or elongate.
Distressed Jeans ($74.95/The Gap): Distressed jeans can help balance out a more structured look.
Sunglasses ($24/Nordstrom): Accessorize with a cool pair of shades. These glasses by A.J. Morgan at Nordstrom provide some protection from the sun and retro glamour.
Statement Bag ($41/Les Pommettes): A great way to provide a pop of color is with a stylish tote.
Sandal ($34.95/DSW): A neutral sandal will work with many outfits and offer endless comfort.
The backpack purse has returned and it’s definitely not your child’s backpack. What could be more helpful to a mom than having both hands free while out and about? Fortunately, this time around they’re more sophisticated and stylish than ever.
Pick your signature style
Whether you’re a sucker for snakeskin, leather, fringe (a hot fall trend), quilting or animal print there’s a backpack for you. Most of the styles we chose are made up of neutral tones so that they’ll match with a number of outfits. For the days when your ensemble needs a little excitement, pick up an inexpensive one in a bright color or fun pattern. Don’t want the hassle of switching everything from one purse to another? Try this trick.
Why it’s worth spending a little more
A purse, especially a mom’s purse, needs to be durable. It must handle all kinds of terrain from bleachers to sandboxes to buses to the pool. You don’t have to go all out though, in fact, you probably don’t want to. Who wants to put their $400 Louis Vuitton on the floor of a school bus? But, it does make sense to pay a bit more for something you’re going to use every day.
Trends come and trends go, but the silhouettes and styles that look good on you and make you feel confident may be less transient. Knowing what you like is the first step in figuring out your personal style. Knowing what your style is will help you create some guidelines to base purchases on and provide rules for cleaning out your closet. If it doesn’t fit your personal style, you probably won’t wear it.
“Whew,” you say, “Knowing what I like – at least that’s easy.” And, you’re right, sort of. If you listed off three styles you love right now, you might say ankle pants, tribal prints, and khaki. Do they really deserve a spot on your list, or are they there because the fashion magazines and Kohl’s ads suggested them? Advertisers and marketing teams make the big bucks to sell you the styles that are “in,” not to show you how to choose the pieces that flatter you and fit your personality. That’s why you have The Mommy Stylist.
Create a style board
To find the styles you like, I recommend creating a style board- a collection of fashion images that inspire you. A good style board makes finding your personal look and putting outfits together quick and easy, an excellent bonus for moms.
There are two easy methods:
Gather magazines, sales ads, photos of yourself or pieces from your closet. Quickly go through them all and pull the images that call to you- there is a reason you like them.
Go digital and make a Pinterest board to represent your style. Pin images fromThe Mommy Stylist Pinterest boards, retailer websites, Google searches, and style bloggers.
Once you have a good selection, narrow it down to 10 to 15 representative images. Next, try putting those images next to each other. I like to create a collage. The image above is my personal style board created in Microsoft PowerPoint. Good old scissors and glue work equally well.
Analyze your style board
Let’s experiment with my style board above. What conclusions can you draw from it about what style I might like?
Some answers might include:
Edgy
Comfy/relaxed
Tomboy chic
What style pieces do I like?
Boyfriend jeans
Pattern/texture
Bangles/jewelry
Outerwear- jackets, vests, sweaters
As a whole, this is pretty characteristic of my wardrobe. I have a couple pairs of boyfriend jeans, which I cuff to the ankle. I have a selection of blazers, jackets, sweaters, vests – too many maybe, but most of them have a steady rotation. I rarely leave the house without a necklace and at least one bangle or cuff. I’d like to go through my jewelry box (someday) and experiment with ways to layer the bangles and necklaces in an aesthetic way.
Edgy tomboy chic is my go-to style. It expresses a bit of my personality while allowing me the comfort and flexibility necessary to enjoy rolling down hills with my children. A typical outfit for me is cuffed boyfriend jeans, t-shirt tucked near the font belt loop, blazer or moto jacket, large coral bead necklace, bangles and my Lyke watch with the token hairband, and flats or wedges. For the office? Switch the boyfriend jeans for cropped Calvin Klein legging work trousers (best invention ever, here’s a similar pair that is pricey but you should be able to find the style for a lower price elsewhere).
It’s that easy.
The next step
Now that you have a clear idea of what cuts and fashions fit into your life, you can go so many places with that knowledge.
Clear out your wardrobe: Anything that doesn’t fit the outline you just created and/or you haven’t worn in a while needs to be given away or donated to simplify dressing in the morning and create room for pieces that you will wear.
Shopping guidelines: Does it meet my criteria? Can I picture wearing it three ways with the existing contents of my wardrobe? Do I like it and will I wear it? Do I really need another pair of boyfriend jeans?
Create a personal look book: You know what you like and you’ve identified the pieces in your current wardrobe that match that ideal, now all you need are practical outfit ideas. If you’ve collected your images for creating the style board on a Pinterest board, then you already have an excellent start. An excellent start that you can access from anywhere.
Have fun
The most important part of this whole process is to have fun while doing it!
Transition from summer to fall with a comfy ensemble that can shift easily from work to play with just a change of accessories.
Besides being a cute, stylish and comfy outfit, all pieces, except one, are under $55. Plus, it will work for pear, straight and hourglass figures. Apples will want a top that isn’t so busy – try this one.
TIP: Tuck the front few inches of the top into the waistband of the pants (like this) for a modern look.
Pants: (now $54.99, reg. $69.50/Loft – Sign up for their email list and get an extra 40% off!): The newest trend in pants, this style is easy to wear because the waistband is elastic and they’re roomy enough to camouflage the tummy. They have a really cute teeny tiny black pattern on them. IMPORTANT: This style pant tends to creep up the rear end so be sure NOT to wear a thong or go commando. You need full on panties to prevent the embarrassing faux pas. A pair of boy short panties will work best as they won’t show any lines (which is another big no-no).
I love the look of khaki and would like to start wearing it. However, when it comes time to pull together outfits, all I can think of is Coldwater Creek – khaki pants, button-down shirt, jean jacket, and maybe a watch or necklace. The look is boxy and tired. Can you please suggest some classy and refreshing ways to style it?
Thanks, Beth
Dear Beth,
We can see why you would like to work khaki into your wardrobe- it’s super versatile, durable, cooler than denim (temperature-wise), and has the potential to look more polished than jeans when you want to be casual but not that casual. And, we totally get what you mean by the “Coldwater Creek” look. To be honest, it is one of the reasons I have avoided khaki in my own closet.
However, the fabric is making a comeback this season. Chances are you can find khaki pants, shorts, vests, blazers, and more on the racks at your favorite stores. Researching outfit ideas for this article caused me to change my mind; Khaki can be cool (style-wise). I turned up some looks that were both classy and refreshing. Go to The Mommy Stylist Pinterest page and click on the Look Classy in Khaki board for inspiration.
By the way, did you know khaki is a fabric as opposed to a color? Khaki is a Hindustani and Urdu word meaning “soil-colored.” This soil-colored garment first appeared as a military uniform for British troops in India and eventually worked its way into the mainstream. (Because of my background in vintage-reproduction clothing and a love of fashion history, I find this evolution fascinating.) When the khaki uniform was popular, available dyes were inconsistent which resulted in an array of colors. Thus, the term evolved to refer to the fabric instead – a tightly knit cotton or linen twill. For this reason, you can find many shades of khaki, like the green pictured above, although it is most often associated with the sand color in the other photos.
Thanks for writing and I hope our Pinterest album helps you find your perfect khaki outfit!
Congratulations to Miranda Halseth from Albany, Oregon for winning our our Lyke Watch Giveaway! Miranda is a stay-at-home mommy with two boys, 5 ½ and 1 ½. We asked Miranda a few questions about her fashion choices as a mom. Read below to see what she had to say.
The Mommy Stylist: What is your favorite accessory?
Miranda: Idk?! With having a toddler my accessories are minimal. Do sunglasses and hair ties count? 😉
TMS: They sure do! What activities does an everyday outfit have to function for?
Miranda: Chasing a toddler, going to the park, running errands and on weekends we are very active. We like to take our boat to the lake, enjoy camping and spending time with family and friends.
TMS: What clothing stores do you purchase from most often (online or in person)?
MIranda: Usually Nordstrom, Kohl’s, Modcloth, Buckle, or Old Navy.
TMS: What is your biggest fashion problem?
Miranda: Living with three boys I have to remind myself that I can dress girly!
TMS: What item(s) can’t you leave the house without?
TMS: What is your favorite article of clothing in your closet right now?
Miranda: I love my Daytrip jean capris and sparkly sandals.
TMS: Are there any current trends that you love/hate?
Miranda: I really like maxi dresses, floral print, chevron stripes, and mint anything! Dislike the crop top trend going on
TMS: What do you like most about The Mommy Stylist?
Miranda: I like how I can actually picture myself wearing the clothes! The outfits are really affordable, super cute and just overall realistic for all moms!
TMS: Finally, what do you wish you had more time for?

First, a quick note to readers: As you know, one of the goals here at The Mommy Stylist is to make fashion quick and easy for moms. To that end, we’ve decided that when we provide outfit suggestions we will make all attempts to stick to one store for the entire outfit so that you don’t have to register/sign in over and over for each different piece. Now, we may not always be able to do this but when we can, we will.
Yes, Heidi Klum is a supermodel but you have to admit the lady knows how to make casual look fantastic. There is no denying that her super simple outfit in the photo above oozes effortless style. And it’s not just because she is tall and thin.
It’s universally flattering – and comfortable
This outfit will flatter just about any body shape or size. The long, loose top skims over the tummy and the butt camouflaging any imperfections while the leggings hold everything in and allow ease of movement.
You can’t go wrong with all black
It looks like the back of Heidi’s top is white but for our non-supermodel purposes we’ll stick with all black which is always slimming and sophisticated. The reason this outfit is special as opposed to just a plain ‘ol black on black ensemble is because of the details – the uneven bottom of the shirt and the accessories. These are the things to look for when shopping – pieces that are just a little different from the norm. Picture this outfit with a plain boxy tee. It wouldn’t be half as cute. And always, always accessorize. It is the easiest way to make it look like you’ve actually put some thought into getting dressed and it adds A LOT of style.
Now, let’s discuss those Birkenstocks
I have always hated (and I mean HATED) Birkenstocks. I was mortified this year when they suddenly became fashionable. But, I have to admit, Heidi pulls them off with this outfit. Besides the fact that they are supposed to be incredibly comfortable, they actually look, dare I say, cute. If you are with me on this then go out and grab yourself a pair. Sure, the’re a little pricey but they’re made very well and will last for years and years. If you just can’t bring yourself to do it, a cute pair of flat sandals will work just as well.
Now, let’s shop!
Armani Exchange AX2002 Gold/Brown Sunglasses ($85/Amazon): Good sunnies are worth the money (my eye doctor told me so) as they will protect your eyes better than a cheaper brand.
Kenneth Cole New York Textured & Hammered Two Disc Pendant Necklace ($38/Lord & Taylor): It’s always worth it to pay a little extra for jewelry. I’ve bought many inexpensive pieces of jewelry only to find that the finish wears off very quickly making it unwearable. If it is something you think you’ll use over and over, dole out the extra dough. It doesn’t have to be hundreds of dollars but $30-$40 is pretty reasonable. Remember, if you wear it enough (which you should if you are heeding my advice above) it will pay for itself in no time.
Along with summer weddings come travel, parties, showers, receptions, and the ever dreaded dress code. During all other seasons, wedding attire is straightforward: a formal dress, heels, a classic bag, a red lip and light eye makeup. In the summer, however, the warm weather throws the rule book out the window. With some guests in sun dresses and flip flops and others in the formal dresses suitable for a winter wedding, what should you wear? Read More
We’ve said it over and over and we’ll say it again: SHOP THE SALES. Doing so is the best way to get quality items you want and need without feeling guilty about the cost. Nordstrom, one of our favorite stores (for their stellar customer service, incredible return policy, free shipping both ways on online orders and, of course, their on-point fashion), is having their Anniversary Sale starting TODAY. Don’t. Miss. It. In fact, shop early (like now) because great pieces at such great prices will sell out quickly. Read More

Mamas, we know you need nail polish that lasts. What’s the point in even getting a manicure if it’s going to chip within a day or two? In a previous post I discussed gel manicures which are definitely an option, but they still require a trip to the salon, so save them for a special occasion or vacation. For all the busy days in between, we’ve found a way to do them yourself, have them dry in no time, and last for almost a week. Read More
Now that The Mommy Stylist has been around for a few years, we decided to occasionally re-post some of our earlier blogs as TMS Replays so that new readers can benefit from them as well. (And they can serve as reminders for those who have been with us from the beginning). Enjoy!

The best time to dress hippie chic is well, when you’re acting like a hippie. And what’s more hippie than gathering up the whole brood, filling up the picnic basket, lounging on a blanket and gazing into the sky? But don’t worry – hippie “chic” doesn’t mean donning tie-dye and floral hair wreaths. It means taking a cue from the “children of the earth” by wearing pieces that are conducive to sitting on the ground, chasing the kids around, and eating with your hands while looking super cute and on-trend. It’s fun to dress in a certain style especially when the situation calls for it. The key though, is to not look costume-y or like you’re trying too hard. That said, we’ve put together an easy outfit to wear to this year’s 4th of July fireworks.
A hat will keep the sun at bay until it gets dark (and after that, it will serve as cute fashion statement and cover up the hair that you didn’t have time to do before leaving the house). Maxi skirts are a dream come true – not only are they comfortable but you can sit with them pulled up off your legs during the warm evening but then cover them when it cools off. And don’t just wear any belt – for the sake of comfort, and to be able to get up and down a lot, a stretchy elastic one is a must. The jean jacket will keep you toasty on top; the flat sandals are easy to walk in (because you’ll most likely have to make a few trips to and from the car); and the bag is large enough to carry the plethora of “stuff” an outdoor event with the family requires. The best part? All of these versatile pieces can be rotated into different outfits that are already in your closet.

How often have you needed to check the time but can’t get to your phone because your hands are too busy carrying [insert any number of items here like: children, soccer equipment, groceries, wet bathing suits, diaper bags, etc.]. While we’ve come to rely on our phones for almost everything, it’s time to remember the value and convenience of the tried and true watch – especially for moms.
Got kids? This watch is for you
When we first discovered Lyke watches the value in them for moms was apparent. First of all, they’re only $59. And for that price you can pick three different colors that each component of the watch will come in so that they can be mixed and matched in just a few seconds. Choose colors that represent your children’s sports teams or schools. Or, just pick some favorite hues and let the kids come up with a combination to wear that day. They’ll be so proud to know mom is wearing something they created.
Don’t forget that a watch is an accessory
Besides being oh-so-helpful, a watch can serve as an accessory which, we always say, are items that can easily and inexpensively take an outfit from drab to fab. Lyke watches have a more sporty look so they’re perfect for everyday activities. They can even work with an business casual office ensemble.
Enough already! How can I win one?

UPDATE 10/26/14: After having worn this watch for a while, we have discovered that the watch face doesn’t stay in place unless it is being worn. For the most part this is fine but just beware that it can easily fall out when you are not wearing it. Also, the latch on one of the buckles broke. We aren’t sure if this is just a fluke but fortunately, the company has this information on their site so it looks like they will replace it:
Problem with your watch?
Please send an email to info@lyketime.com. Make sure to include:
1. Explanation of what happened
2. Photo of broken part
3. Address that you would like the replacement part sent to.
You’re fresh out of the water, the little ones are shivering and the big kids take off down the beach to flirt with the cute new lifeguard. The afternoon dip was fantastic. Now it’s time to snap back to reality as you mentally prepare to wrangle the brood, load up the mini-SUV and head to the baseball field.
Quickly, you towel off and throw on your swim cover-up while maneuvering the babies out of their wet suits and yelling across the pool for the teens to stop bothering the lifeguard and get their uniforms on. You’re quick but, of course, it takes longer than expected to get everyone going and you’re left to go to the ball field in your swim cover-up. Its summer – the other parents will understand. Hell, half of them are probably in their swimsuits as well; it’s 90 degrees out after all. But, do you really want to be running around town in your bathing suit? Probably not.
Cover-ups for moms, not teenagers
As a mom, you don’t need just any swim cover-up. You need one that stays up and leaves your hands free, which rules out strapless and most sarongs. You need one that provides full coverage and could feasibly pass for a dress or t-shirt. Did we mention you are strapped for time between work, life and corralling the kids and don’t have time to look for a cover-up that meets your strict criteria? Rest easy. We’ve done the shopping for you.
Mom-worthy swim cover-up picks
(top row, left to right)
Bright stripes tee ($58/Macy’s): We like the relaxed feel of this cover-up. It could easily pass as a mini dress or, should you have enough time to pull on leggings or jeans, an oversized tee. The ruching at the thigh and hip is curve-friendly, perfect for a mom’s figure.
Laser-cut kimono dress (sale $27.00/Macy’s): The empire waist on this style causes the fabric to skim over the tummy and thighs concealing imperfections. Wear it as a mini-dress or pair it with frayed cut-offs or faux-leather shorts for errands before heading to the pool.
(second row, left to right)
Sporty Hoodie ($29.99/6pm): This cover-up is perfect for a comfy, sporty look as the black edging provides an athletic feel. Pair with rolled ankle-jeans.
Striped Empire-waist dress ($58.00/Macy’s): The v-neck on this dress pulls the eye up and away from problem areas (thighs, butt, etc.). The drawstring creates an enviable figure and the flowy fabric skims the tummy and hips. If you need more coverage for running around town, just throw on a pair of black leggings.

Summer brings with it so many wonderful things – longer days, warmer weather, time with the kids, bike rides, picnics, vacations and pool parties. Whoa, back up. Pool parties? If the thought such an event sends chills down your spine and puts fear in your heart you’re not alone. Fortunately though, designers have gotten on board and started to make swimsuits with real women in mind, not just those whose age ends with the word “teen.” Read More
Wide-leg trousers are making a comeback. We’ve seen them slowly sneak back onto the runways over the last few seasons and now they’re hitting the mainstream. Why should you be excited about this? Because wide-leg pants elongate the legs, flatter all body types and create a sophisticated, tailored look. You probably haven’t worn anything but skinnies for a while but don’t be intimidated by the wide-leg trouser because there are many styles and fits for all! Read More
You may have seen our recent post (which included a 10% discount code) about Formia Design’s adorable jewelry and keepsakes made from children’s artwork (like this perfect-for-Father’s-Day bottle opener). Well, the nice folks at the company sent me a pendant made from an owl my nephew created and all I can say is that I. Am. In. Love. Dear Mommy Stylist,
I just began perusing your blog. I don’t have any real fashion sense, though I hate to admit this as I’m an artist and should know better. I was wondering if you have anything, or have done anything, geared toward the “50 years-young and up wanna be stylin’ crowd”?
My kiddies are in their teens, I give private art lessons, write for the local paper and am a substitute teacher (the older the students, the higher my heels get; I like walking in the classroom at six feet tall when subbing at our local high school). I’ve learned on my own that comfy shoes are a must; it only took a few blisters and several throbbing toes to figure that out!
Thanks for thinking of this blog, it makes us moms feel kinda special.
I remember hearing once, perhaps in a history of fashion class, that after traumatic national events (like 9/11 or the most recent recession) fashion tends to lean toward neutral colors and solid fabrics. A few years after, pops of red and other primary hues begin a scattered appearance. Eventually, as these events become history (but never forgotten), we get to a point where embracing bold patterns and vibrant colors is a welcome change.
In the past few seasons, striking colors and patterns have made a resurgence with the general public, reflecting a nation with renewed confidence and hope. Perhaps this is why tribal-influenced fashion was rampant on the runways this year, and why it’s a must for any mom’s spring wardrobe.
As you may have seen in my recent post, “Mom’s Spring Shopping List” full skirts are a big trend for the spring and summer (and will most likely trickle into fall as well). And what a blessing as they cover the pooch, the butt and the thighs! Heaven sent, right? Read More

Warm weather is finally on the horizon and spring is on its way. It is time to overhaul that drab winter wardrobe and get into some color. What shades should you invest in this season? How about some of the gorgeous hues in the Spring 2014 Pantone color fashion report?
As a mom, having a pristine manicure is almost as elusive as finding the mate to every solo sock in your house. Even if you do find time to get to the nail salon, the polish usually only lasts a few days.
Mommy Stylist reader, Marlize, with her adorable girls.
Dear Mommy Stylist,
We recently moved to Dubai. I am loving the warm weather, but I am desperate for some new ideas for clothes. Relocating from France, I have been wearing jeans and tops with scarves for the last few years since I’ve stopped working and had my three kids (six, four and two years old).
For me, it is too hot to wear jeans, having to wait for the kids outside in the sun after school. Currently I am wearing shorts and a few summer dresses. Could you please provide me with stylish alternatives, I want to look stylish, but not as if I tried too hard.
I am of average height and build (with a ‘mummy tummy’) and 41 years old.

As a new Mom, I am so happy to find your blog! I have loved reading your posts. I’m hoping you can provide some advice about leggings, because I need some clarification. You see, I am a classic pear, with a small chest and large butt and thighs, and I REALLY want to wear leggings, as they are the MOST functional pant for chasing after babies. However, I find that any outfit I make with leggings just accentuates my flaws, and doesn’t give me that hourglass illusion that a good outfit gets. Instead, the longer shirts and skinny leggings draw attention to my thighs and because they’re blousy, make my chest look even flatter. Isn’t it possible that pears should not wear leggings? Or is there a combo I’m missing?

Let’s face it. With kids, life is rarely dull. And often chaotic. Whether it’s a trip to the emergency room (again), having to cover for the carpool mom whose car breaks down on the way to school in the morning, or running out when your 16-year-old gets into a fender bender and calls in hysterics, a mom often has to get out the door in the blink of an eye. The fact that she hasn’t brushed her hair, isn’t wearing make-up, and is in her pajamas and bunny slippers is of little concern; when duty calls, she’s on it.

Valentine’s Day is the time to be your sexiest self. Pull out your highest heels and some fab jewelry, give yourself a smoky eye (learn how from Talia Castellano, the amazing little girl who lost her battle with cancer but made a huge impact in her 13 short years) and slip into a dress that will make your significant other do a double take.
Go all out
Think romantic like sequins or lace, and sexy like super short, low cut or form-fitting. Don’t be afraid to go all out for the person you chose to be your partner in life. Don’t they deserve it? Even if you’re going to have dinner at home, take the time to get all gussied up. You will make your mate feel special, as well as yourself. If you’re headed to a restaurant that isn’t formal but want to wear a dressy dress, just put a blazer or leather jacket over it to tone it down.
It’s not too cold for sexy
And for those of you who live in a cold climate, add a pair of opaque tights to your ensemble and drape an overcoat over your shoulders (it’s the new trend, you know). Skip the shawl. They’re passé – for now. They’ll probably be back in at some point, so store them away until then.
There’s no shame in Spanx
Don’t let those bumps and bulges keep you from feeling good in your dress. Show them who’s boss by wiggling into some shapewear. Spanx may be the most well-known brand but there are a lot of others out there these days. Find one that works for you. It is worth the price; you’ll wear it over and over and over.
Now, onto the dresses!
If your first thought is that all of your dresses are too worn, out of style or don’t fit, fear not. Afraid you’re going to feel guilty for buying a new frock because that money really should be saved for your daughter’s ballet lessons? We’ve got a guilt-free answer. Always wish you could wear a designer dress? Now you can.
What? Rent a dress?!
Yep, rent a dress. Rent the Runway is a fantastic service created by women who understand what women need. They offer dresses for as low as $30 by designers like Temperly London, Shoshanna, Robert Rodriguez, Tibi, Dolce & Gabbana and many more. The price includes TWO dresses (one in a second size in case your first choice doesn’t fit) and a four-day rental. (A standard shipping charge of $9.95 will be added to your bill.) Your package will arrive by 8pm on your chosen rental date. Return it in the pre-paid envelope provided.
Gross. Are the dresses dirty?
Each dress is dry cleaned before it is sent out, and don’t worry about what will happen if you get something on it. Normal wear and tear is covered by a $5 insurance charge. Totally worth it.
It gets better
An extremely helpful feature of the Rent the Runway site is that customers can upload photos of themselves in their rented dresses along with a review. So, not only can you see how a particular item looks on real people but also read about what they thought of it.

The diagonal line of the fabric will make your waist look smaller.
Robert Rodriguez Sequin Disco Romper (rental price, $40/retail price, $432): Stand out in a sexy, not sleazy, off-the-shoulder romper. If the shorts are too short, or you’re worried about cellulite, simply add a pair of opaque black tights and pair them with black pumps or booties – the higher the better – to elongate your legs.

If there’s one beauty item I can’t live without it’s mascara. Even if I have no other make-up on I try to take a moment to apply a coat or two to open up my eyes and keep from looking like I just rolled out of bed. That said, I am always on the hunt for quality mascara at, of course, a decent price.
Take it from someone who’s tried them all
Throughout my years in the fashion industry, I’ve tested just about every mascara on the market and found that most often, the ones that cost a bit more are worth it. Sure, every now and then a drugstore brand comes out with a decent formula but all too often it ends up discontinued, or “improved” in a way that isn’t an improvement at all. Then, the whole trial and error process starts again. You know, the one where you keep going back to the store to buy another brand because the one you got yesterday didn’t live up to any of the claims made on the packaging. Before you know it, you’ve got several tubes of crappy mascara sitting in a drawer where they will remain, gathering dust, until you find time to clean out said drawer – most likely after your youngest has left for college.
Don’t like it? Return it!
Higher-end/department store brands on the other hand, are pretty consistent in their quality. And if your favorite is discontinued, there always seems to be another good one to replace it. The best part though is that most department stores, as well as Sephora, will allow a return on an item that has been opened/used. Think about it: for the cost of those three sub-par drugstore mascaras in your drawer you could have purchased a super-fabulous formula that will actually do what it’s supposed to do – and if it doesn’t, simply return it and try another!
Yes, you can afford high-end mascara
In general, $30 is not a lot of money. But when there are $10 mascaras out there, spending $30 on a tube feels like a splurge – a splurge you shouldn’t make. But when you find one that does its job correctly, it’s less about a splurge and more about a smart investment. And when you think of it that way, you have to admit, it’s a pretty good deal.
And the winner is…
YSL’s Baby Doll. While it darkens and thickens a bit, it really comes through with lengthening. It also goes on smoothly and cleanly, and lasts all day. How many times have I looked in a mirror mid-afternoon on a work day to find that my mascara has somehow made its way to the skin under my bottom lashes? I always wonder how long I’ve been walking around with the “raccoon look,” how many meetings I’ve attended like that, and why none of my friends told me! Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about that anymore because with Baby Doll, it never happens. Now, I just apply it in the morning and don’t think about it again until it’s time to take it off. That’s my kind of make-up.

Ah, New Year’s Day. The end of the holiday season. After several weeks of craziness, most of us are ready to tone it down for a while. It’s time to put away the sparkles and heels (temporarily, of course!) and get down to some casual comfort.
Comfortable doesn’t mean dumpy
Whether you’re having friends over to watch football or are hitting up some post-holiday sales, you can combine a few current trends to keep yourself looking stylish without sacrificing comfort. Even if you managed to gain a few pounds over the last month, don’t fret. First, give yourself a break. You’re human, and the holiday season is a wonderful one. It’s a time to celebrate and what would celebrating be without a little overindulgence? Don’t get mad at yourself. We ALL do it. And second, our New Year’s Day outfit will provide a little extra room and a little extra coverage to camouflage any evidence of said indulging.
Fall in love with boyfriend jeans
Why should you love boyfriend jeans? Plain and simple, they’re loose. Some even say to buy one size up for just the right “look” but go with whatever you feel works best. We often recommend mid-rise pants to prevent the dreaded muffin top but many boyfriend jeans have a low-rise. However, because they are roomy, gut spillage shouldn’t be a problem. But, if it is, we’ve got a solution.
How to hide your muffin top
Tuck the front five or six inches of your sweater into your pants. This creates a blousing effect which hides that excess flop of tummy, even when you’re siting down. And the tuck will make you appear slimmer. See an example here.
Roll your boyfriend jeans up the right way
If you want to be up-to-date, the fashion right now is give your jeans a medium to wide roll. Like this:

If it’s too cold to go without socks
Some of our readers live in climates that don’t allow for even a smidge of skin to be exposed to the elements. If this is you, then have fun with socks. I’m short so I like to keep mine the same color as my shoe to elongate my legs but, if you are the experimental type, feel free to try colors or even patterns like this:

Mossimo Supply Co. Plaid Wool Anorak Jacket (now $29.99, reg. $39.99/Target): This may just be the cutest anorak we’ve ever seen. It’s casual and represents one of the year’s hottest trends, plaid. Plus, put it on over any ho-hum outfit and you’ve got instant cold-weather style.
Boyfriend Jeans ($29.95/H&M): You may need to wear a belt with your baggy boyfriend jeans and, if so, by all means do it. It’s not a requirement though. Also, because they are loose, try to keep your top a little more fitted or use the partial tuck-in method mentioned above.
Number 38 Sweater (now $16.99, reg. $24.80/Forever 21): Sure, you could wear just about any sweater with boyfriend jeans but why not get into the spirit of the New Year’s Day games by taking on the sporty trend with a vibrant piece that shows your spirit (even if you don’t really have any)? You can definitely wear it again throughout the season and even into spring.
Aqua Fox Mittens ($58/Fancy): Yes, these are a little pricey but they’re so cute we just had to share them with you. If you consider that you’ll wear them for a few years then they’re worth the investment.
Chism Wedge Sneaker ($38.49/Aldo): You can really wear any kind of sneaker or short boot with a boyfriend jean. I decided on these to keep the outfit more on the casual side.

Who says runway fashion doesn’t apply to real life? Sure, the garments may often be extravagant and expensive, but runway looks inspire the budget-friendly spin-offs that end up in our shopping bags, many of which are more flattering than the originals. Both sometimes need a little help to look their best.
Models aren’t what they seem
What about the models? They may be tall and thin, but getting them ready for the catwalk isn’t as easy as throwing the clothes on their lanky frames at the last-minute. There are a million little things that go into making them, and their outfits, appear flawless – even when they aren’t.
Fake it confidently, and you’ll make it
Having worked fashion shows and handled wardrobe for rock concerts, I have witnessed first-hand how important perception is to a performer or designer. During one experience, I was responsible for clothing 20 dancers, maintaining the wardrobe during the show, and assisting in quick-changes (outfit changes between songs, or walks on the runway). The audience expected the dancers to be perfect – tall, slim, and fashionable – and that’s exactly what they saw.
It’s all an illusion
What they didn’t realize though is how many wardrobe tricks were utilized to create the illusion of perfection; tricks that over time have worked their way into my personal life. And now they can be a part of yours. Why should the professionals be the only ones in the know? They shouldn’t. In fact, I know of one particular group who would benefit greatly from some time- and money-saving tips – the ever-busy mom. So next time you find yourself in a clothing conundrum you’ll know just what to do.
Practical tips for moms from the runway:
1. Eliminate static cling without covering yourself in dryer sheet chemicals
Thinly spread hand or body lotion on the palms of your hands.
Rub it into your tights, nylons, or leggings beneath where your skirt or top lies. Ta-da! No more static cling!
2. Add traction to soles or prevent stocking feet from sliding around in shoes
Don’t have time to scuff the bottom of your new shoes to keep from wiping out on a smooth floor? Tired of feeling like you’re slipping out of your heels? Reach for a bottle of hairspray.
A quick spritz on the bottom of your shoe or stocking foot will quickly fix the problem. This is how models maintain their balance and poise on some very smooth surfaces in sky-high heels.
*Added bonus: The same treatment will also keep your make-up in place all day. It’s not necessarily the healthiest tip, but if you happen to be going to an event where you know you’ll be dancing the night away (i.e. sweating), a little hairspray will keep your face looking as fresh as when you first arrived.
3. Manage wandering belts, wayward v-necks, gaping between buttons and more
You may have heard of Hollywood Fashion Tape, a double sided, clear tape that tames unruly clothing. However, you’ll get a lot more bang for your buck, and an equal, if not better, product by purchasing toupee tape instead. Yep, that’s exactly what it is – tape that was originally created to keep toupees in place. We like Topstick which can be found at most beauty supply stores, like Sally’s. Use it to: harness a wandering belt without the aid of belt loops; help keep v-necks from revealing too much; prevent spaghetti straps from sliding off your shoulder; conceal bra cups when bending over (very useful with stretchy necklines); and control gaping between shirt buttons. Toupee tape is the duct tape of fashion; it can solve just about any wardrobe faux pas.
4. Keep bra straps from showing
Method 1: Safety pin from the inside.
Method 2: Use a bra converter to hide straps while wearing a racer-back top. Remember to lengthen your bra straps before attaching the converter to prevent feeling as if you are trapped in a corset.
Method 3: Stick a piece of toupee tape on your bra strap, then place your shirt on top of it.
Method 4: If you can’t keep your straps hidden, then you have two options: Dig out your strapless bra or wear a bra with clear straps to minimize visibility.
Life is your runway. Hold your head high, and strut your stuff!

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule or Kwanzaa, dressing for a December family holiday gathering isn’t much different than dressing for Thanksgiving. A mom wants to look cute, but at the same time she must be able to maneuver around the kitchen, eat to her heart’s content, sit on the floor to play games, cuddle on the couch to watch a movie and of course, feel warm enough outside and cool enough inside.
However, the Christmas/Hanukkah/Yule/Kwanzaa time of year allows us to be more festive than usual. So, why not embrace it? A simple metallic shoe or red sweater will help to make the day feel even more special. And, true to our Mommy Stylist commitment, we’ve found pieces that can be used to create a variety of outfits for a plethora of occasions (winter school event, play date, holiday lunch, etc.).
Knit Turtleneck Sweater ($19.95/H&M): This sweater will become your winter BFF. It will look effortlessly chic with just about anything from skirts to jeans to leggings (as long as it is long enough to COMPLETELY cover your bootie and crotch area).
Lauren Jeans Co. Classic Straight-Leg Corduroy Pants (now, $74.99, reg. $99.50/Macy’s): The mid-rise waist on these cords will keep that muffin top where it belongs. However, you’ll no doubt get a bit bloated from all the holiday goodies and although these pants have some stretch, it’s never enough. But, we have a brilliant solution – your pregnancy belly band. Who says you can only wear these when you’re expecting? We wear them under loose tops (like the sweater above) to keep our mid-section warm and to hide our unbuttoned pants when we’ve over-indulged. And because a belly band looks like a shirt peeking out from under the garment on top of it, you’ll look like a layering pro. Would you rather have your pants feel like a vice around your stomach or enjoy the day looking stylish and feeling comfortable?

Last year, we featured a dressier Thanksgiving look that was more suited to a formal holiday dinner. It’s still in style, so click the link to get inspired if this is the way your family rolls. However, if your gathering goes the way of sweaters and jeans, we’ve got something just as easy – but much cuter.
Let’s start with comfort
Stretchy fabrics make bending over to get things out of the oven easy, and they won’t feel like a vice around your mid-section when that post-meal bloat sets in. The leggings and soft top we’ve chosen will allow you to move freely – and they won’t need to constantly be adjusted, tucked in or pulled up.
Wear it again
Requiring minimum time and effort to put together, our no-fuss outfit will easily transfer to a mom’s everyday life. Think play dates, meeting a friend for coffee, lounging around the house, or running errands.
Infinity scarves are everywhere these days, probably because they’re so easy to wear. They can add polish to a fitted t-shirt, help cover up a low-cut top or give personality to an otherwise “plain” outfit.
This t-shirt dress has just enough shape to make it perfect for mommies. Fitted at the waist and flared at the hips, it skims over the typical problem areas. It’s long enough to cover the butt and crotch (two areas you never want to show while wearing leggings) and can even hide the thighs (depending on your height). Did we mention that this dress is also made of incredibly soft organic cotton?
The beauty of these leggings is that they are high-waisted which means you can say goodbye to muffin top and won’t have to deal with the elastic waistband cutting off your circulation after a big meal. And, because they’re thin, you won’t be sweating to death in the hot kitchen all day. However, you will need to be sure to wear them with a long top as they are a bit see-through. Added bonus: As a busy mom, we understand that as much as you like to look your best, you will probably be more concerned with the turkey’s drumsticks on Thanksgiving than your own. No time to shave your legs? Don’t worry. With these leggings from Kiwi, any stubble will be our little secret.
Sock buns make quick work of a polished up-do. This style will not only keep you cool while cooking, it will keep your hair out of your face – and out of the stuffing. Wear it as an alternative to the ponytail and as a way to keep your infant from tearing your hair out. Adding a braid around the base relaxes the formal ballerina style.
Getting chilly? Slip on this v-neck sweater. Reviews say it “hangs just right and pairs perfectly with jeans, leggings, and boots.” They run small, so order a size up.
Soft, cozy boot socks are always in demand during the colder months. The charcoal color has a nice tone-on-tone pattern adding interest to the neutral look.
I am in love with these Merrell boots in Espresso! Merrell boots are true to size and incredibly comfortable. I wear mine daily now that the cold has set in.
Let’s not forget the most practical accessory for cooking and serving Thanksgiving dinner – oven mitts. I received a similar pair as a gift a few years ago and was instantly smitten. They are the perfect size and shape, not unruly like their mitten-shaped brethren.

As a mom, you may be looking at the upcoming holiday season with trepidation. It’s not that you don’t enjoy it, it’s just that there’s So. Much. To. Do. And since most of the “to-dos” have to do with everyone except yourself, guess whose needs get relegated to the bottom of the list? Right.
On top of it, you’re probably getting invited to all kinds of soirees from the office holiday dinner to the neighborhood cocktail party. And you really want to go. After all, you haven’t been to a dressy grown-up party since well, probably last December. But, who has time to find something to wear that is stylish, doesn’t have little hand stains on it, and actually fits? Well, we do. So, we’ve done the shopping for you.
Put a look together in no time
The best thing about all of the pieces in the photo above is that they can be worn with black tights and black shoes so putting together an entire outfit is easy. If your choice is a solid color, try some patterned tights. As for shoes, pointy-toe pumps are back with a vengeance but if you’re feeling a little funkier try a pair of high-heeled booties.
Don’t Be Afraid to Show Those Gams
Cocktail dresses are often fairly short but don’t let that stop you from wearing them. As long as most of your upper body covered, it balances out. Plus, it’s sexy – and you deserve to feel sexy every once in a while. And the beauty of colder weather is that tights are required so there’s no need to worry about not having a tan or highlighting your cellulite. You can even buy Spanx tights to help camouflage the tummy, thighs or butt.
How to Cover Up
To keep the chill away, try pairing your holiday ensemble with a blazer or a leather jacket.
Wear It Again
If your parties involve different groups of people, you can wear your dress again and again and no one will be the wiser. On the other hand, if it looks great on you (and you feel hot/sexy/pretty in it) does it really matter if you are seen in it more than once?
Now, let’s get to the shopping part!

The time for food comas and swapping stories with family and friends is fast approaching. Thanksgiving feast is just around the corner, and wanting to look chic while still being able to bend down to lift that turkey out of the oven or eat our weight in food, is always a challenge. Why not try a cozy sweater with a high-waisted skirt that will give your belly some room to grow? Add an adjustable belt, warm sweater tights and some on-trend shoes for the perfect Turkey Day ensemble. You’ll look like the gorgeous, stylish mama that you are while impressing guests by playing the part of the perfect hostess – all while remaining comfortable.
Besides being affordable, the pieces from this outfit are extremely versatile. The sweaters, belts, tights, jewelry, handbag and shoes can all be worn again. Throw on the sweater with a pair of jeans and some ankle boots to run errands. The apron will come in handy next month while baking up a plethora of holiday treats. There’s nothing that won’t fit in the roomy handbag that’s big enough to hold everyday “mommy essentials” like a cell phone, wallet, first-aid kit, snacks, diapers, sunglasses and lipstick. Wear the gorgeous skirt all season long with tights and boots or flats. Switch up the sweater with a blouse and jacket or belted cardigan. The looks are endless. What mom doesn’t love a stylish, functional outfit that can be remixed and worn time and again? I know I do.
(If you need an extra layer to help make the trek from the car to the front door more bearable in the cold weather, try a ruana, a long, draping sweater-cape, like the one featured in this post. And for an alternate Thanksgiving Day outfit, check out the one we featured in 2011. Don’t worry, it’s still in style.) Read More
Thoughts of autumn often conjure up images of brightly-colored leaves, crisp, cool air and trick-or-treating. But for fashionistas, this time of year brings visions of something much more exciting – fall shoes! Who doesn’t love a great pair of boots or a funky sneaker? Not to mention that closed-toe shoes allow us to re-allocate the funds from our summer pedicure budget to our winter shoe budget! Ha!
Moms Have Limitations
As always though, dressing for moms is different than that of any other creature on earth. Moms have a serious list of limitations too plentiful to list here, but what it boils down to is functionality, comfort, versatility, price (the lower the better) and style (which is just as important as all the others but is all to often neglected).
We’ve Done the Shopping For You
We’ve carefully curated a chic collection to meet all your needs from business dinners to a trip to the zoo. They’re all on-trend so you’ll look polished and put-together in even the most informal situations.
It’s a Boot Free-For-All
And one last thing regarding boots. It’s a rare time in fashion history when anything goes and right now is that time for boots. Just about any heel height (from flats to wedges to cowboy heels to stilettos) and any boot height (bootie, ankle boot, riding boot, over-the-knee) works.
1.Coconuts Rifle Boots ($54.99/Famous Footwear): You don’t have to be a cowgirl to wear these boots; they’ll look cool and modern on even the most urban of us.
2. Merona Kadence Wedge Ankle Boot ($34.99/Target): If you want a little height with more stability than a heel, look no further than a stylish wedge.
3. Women’s Tassel Rain Skimmer Shoe ($29.99/Target): Navigate the puddles without getting soaked in a cute pair of rain loafers.
4. Tommy Hilfiger Brinley Bootie ($79.95/DSW): A feminine interpretation of a classic menswear look, these gorgeous heeled oxfords will make you feel as sexy as you look.
5. Zara Ballerina Shoe ($79.90/Zara): Pair these blue leopard print flats with jeans, khakis or an a-line skirt for a thoroughly modern ensemble.
6. Chelsea Crew Rush Hour Boot ($44.94/DSW): A pair of black flat boots this cute and versatile is sure to become a wardrobe staple.
7. Lace-Up Brogue Combat Boot ($45.50/Charlotte Russe): It’s impossible to look any less than sophisticated in a pair of riding boots.
8. Distressed Zip-Back Combat Boot ($42.50/Charlotte Russe): Madonna may have started the lace-up boot trend in the eighties but it’s back with a vengeance and this time, it’s not just for teenagers.
9. Standout Chained Booties ($39.80/Forever 21): The shiny finish on these boots make them look much more expensive than they are.
10. Mia Nashville Bootie ($54.95/DSW): If you’ve always wanted to try red shoes but were afraid, these burgundy ankle boots are the perfect solution.
11. H&M Sneakers ($24.95/H&M): Fall in love with these uber-chic kicks (we did!) that are both versatile and unique.
12. Sorel Joan of Arctic Wedge Mid Boot ($240/Sorel): You can’t put a price on warmth, comfort AND style. Sure, these might cost a pretty penny but when it comes to keeping toasty and dry it is worth spending the extra money.

Since the introduction of the “boyfriend” jeans and cardigan, the menswear for women field has been pretty stale. With all the women lounging around in their boyfriend’s (or husband’s) actual clothes, you wonder what took so long.
The glory of menswear for women is that it is so chic. Whether dressed up or down, blazers, button downs, trousers, ties, and elbow patches, traditionally domain of men, look put-together. Wear this trend to the office, running errands, on play-dates, a night out with the girls, lunch, or chaperoning a field trip. Layer a blazer and a v-neck sweater over a button down shirt and trousers for work, then switch into jeans and loafers for the rest of the evening. This “menswear” is fit to wear out of the house- finally!

Wear these pieces together for a effortless, casual cool ensemble. (Photos courtesy of retailers)
Taking the kids trick or treating is one of the joys of being a mother. Getting them ready for it however, often isn’t. By the time you gather all the necessities for their costumes, and get them all made up, the last thing you want to do is put together a cute outfit for yourself. But, the thought of having every neighbor see you in old sweatpants that feel like a sausage casing and a torn tee from your college sorority isn’t your idea of fun either.
Plan in advance
So let’s get a simple, stylish outfit ready ahead of time. That way, when the ticking and treating commences you can revel in your children’s joy – instead of focusing on which tree or bush to hide behind as you move from house to house.
Use what’s in your closet
Grab your favorite pair of skinny jeans and a casual shirt that flatters your figure from your closet. If you don’t have those then it’s high time you went out and got them. Having these as wardrobe basics will help you get dressed and look cute in a pinch (and aren’t moms always in a pinch?).
Lessons in layering
Next is where the fun starts. In order to keep warm, you don’t always have to hide under a coat. For variety, learn to layer and you’ll be able to adjust your level of warmth based on your climate and/or where you are going (indoors, outdoors or both). Just make sure that if you anticipate removing layers at any point that each one is wearable on its own. In the example above, all of the pieces are meant to be worn together but can be utilized separately as well. The jeans and checked shirt are fine by themselves but the skull sweater adds interest. (Be sure to let the bottom of the shirt and sleeves peek out from underneath.) Chilly? Add the military jacket. Roll up the sleeves one or two times to reveal those of the shirt and sweater under it.
Add style with accessories
Once you have your basic outfit it’s time to amp it up with accessories . A jacket or vest, comfy boots, and a hat will add as much style as if you were wearing an expensive designer top.
Use and re-use
The best thing about this outfit is that it’s not only inexpensive but every piece is functional and versatile enough to wear over and over. Try different combinations with other treasures in your closet or, because they are all stylish and cute by themselves, let them make a solo statement.
1. Studded Checked Two Pocket Shirt ($59.90/Express): This shirt isn’t just for casual days; try it with a pencil skirt and pumps at the office.
2. Faux Leather Baseball Cap ($18/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): Leather, even faux, makes anything cooler.
3. Skull Print Pullover Sweater ($28.99/Charlotte Russe): Yes, it’s Halloween but you can wear this playful sweater all year long.
5. Coffee Shop Women’s 3/4 Sleeve Jacket ($45.99/Target): Look good running errands or cheering on the team in a trendy military jacket. They’re versatile, functional and super cute. This one comes in plus-size (link above) and petite.
6. White Mountain Women’s Fido Boot ($64.99/Famous Footwear): I want these boots. And you should too. The flat sole offers stability and comfort, while the style is current and uber-cool.
7. Joe Fresh Puffer Vest ($39/Joe Fresh): Don’t hate the puffer vest. It just wants to look good and keep you warm. Give it a chance by pairing it with pieces like button down shirts and fun sweaters. Skip the fleece jacket, baggy jeans and sneakers.

Heading to the office often creates a dilemma for moms – for a couple of reasons. First, the mommy vs. career woman conundrum: on one hand, you want to stay home all day and play with your kids, but on the other, you crave interaction with adults and conversation not centered on poop, soccer matches, or homework assignments. Second, what are you going to wear that will be professional but allow you to navigate a muddy baseball field immediately after leaving the office?
Whether you are back to work for the first time after baby’s birth or are already an expert at juggling a career and a family, your wardrobe doesn’t have to be another quandary.
What does business casual actually mean?
With most workplaces opting for business casual these days women seem to be in a state of confusion, listing too far into jeans and t-shirts or clinging to the power suit. When in actuality, a business casual dress code is easier than you think. And it pairs perfectly with a mom’s lifestyle. Popular layering looks (view our business wear Pinterest board for inspiration) make transitioning between the office and the park as easy as trading your blazer for a long drapey sweater and switching to cute tennis shoes or flats. Not to mention, layering is very flattering on all body types.
Layering 101
Successful layering is low-key. Don’t overdo it, just show a bit of your collar, cuffs, and the bottom of your button-down shirt from beneath a sweater or a blazer. Throw a cardigan or suit jacket over a dress or long top. Have fun with colors and patterns. It doesn’t all have to be neutral; it just has to be classy.

If you’re going to be a stylish mom you’re must get over your fear of hats. One of the easiest ways to instantly add panache to even the most ordinary outfit is with a hat. But not just any hat. It has to be a fashionable hat (see photos above).
The right way to wear them
Unless you want to look like Debbie Gibson circa 1984, don’t wear hats on the back of your head (the only exception is the beanie which is sometimes called a beret). Most should be worn covering the forehead, especially fedoras. Vanessa Minillo wears it correctly in this photo. For cold weather, try this style (worn by Paris Hilton). If the thought of wearing a hat scares you, why not start with a military or newsboy cap in black or brown? Then, once you get more comfortable you can move on to a fedora or cloche.
A word about baseball hats
Whatever you do, don’t put your ponytail through the hole in the back. Wear a low ponytail (like this) or simply let your hair hang down (like this). Don’t tuck it behind your ears. (In fact, don’t tuck your hair behind your hears when wearing any hat.) You can even try pony tails or braids like this.
They’ll save time
The biggest bonus of wearing hats? You don’t need to do your hair – a major time-saver for moms. Who doesn’t want to save time and look good?

Flirty, feminine florals are in this fall. Although not in the line-up every autumn, take advantage of the trend this season as designers provide us with the opportunity to envelop ourselves in regal, decadent hues like plum, burgundy and deep fuchsia.
Darker shades flatter most skin tones and are just as pretty as their bright sisters of summer.
Styling your florals is as easy as changing jackets. Don a denim jacket to run errands, then switch to a blazer or leather style for a night out.
Throw this casual fall coat on to show your seasonal style. Layer over black, a solid that matches one of the colors in the print, or a fitted sports shirt.
Wear this sophisticated button-down, with a print reminiscent of French toile, to work, the art exhibit, weddings, and special events. Trousers or a fitted pencil skirt will work well with it.
Pair these leggings with a long solid top and booties or flats for a stylishly casual look.

Camouflage has been in the fashion scene for quite a while but this fall, it seems to be even more in the spotlight than usual. This is a good thing for moms who seek on-trend clothing that is both versatile and casual, and are bored with their mostly solid-colored closet. The camouflage pattern will add personality and variety to your everyday ensembles without being too “loud” or obnoxious.
Try Some Color
Camo is most often seen in hues of earthy greens and browns but, this season, designers are offering it alternate hues like blue and pink. Don’t be afraid to give them a try. Again, because the patterns are often made with different shades of the same color family the result is subtle yet interesting.
Accessorize With It
If a camo shirt or dress is too much for you, then show your fashion know-how by accessorizing with it. There are plenty of scarves and jewelry, and even hats and shoes, that represent the trend.
How To Wear It
You can always wear camo with other pieces that are the same color, or in the same color family, as those in the pattern. A green- or brown-based pattern can work with similar shades of green, brown, beige, black, white or grey – basically all the neutrals. Looking to pair your neutral camo with a color? Choose hues that would pair well with the camo colors if they were solids (i.e. pink with green camo, orange with brown camo).

I have been invited to a 1950s retro theme party and have a dilemma. With my fall budget, I don’t want to spend money on something I’ll only wear once. Can you help me find a great outfit with some pieces I can use again?
Thanks,
Janice
Having experience in the vintage fashion reproduction market, I know just how to help you. Skip the poodle skirts and look for a piece that creates a grown-up, hourglass figure.
The Eva dress from reVamp (pictured above), is perfect for both a costume and a current, everyday look. With a flattering princess seam and stretchy bengaline fabric it’s just right for making a woman look like a woman. Plus, the fuller skirt skims over flaws and that’s always a good thing. The sailor-type collar provides a unique and expensive-looking detail that adds style.
And to top if off, reVamp is offering an exclusive 20% discount for The Mommy Stylist readers. Use code MOMMYSALE at checkout.
Below are details on how to style the Eva two different ways – retro and modern. So whether you want to be a 1950s bombshell or a stylish, contemporary woman you’ll know just what to do.
Don’t let the price scare you. A dress of this quality, that embraces mommy curves so elegantly, will last for years and retain its timeless style. In addition, many of reVamp’s clothes can be made using your custom measurements which means they’ll fit like a glove. For an extra $10.00, the Eva can be altered to button all the way down which means you can wear it even more by turning it from a dress into an adorable coat. Don’t forget to use code MOMMYSALE to receive an exclusive 20% discount. Wear it again: wedding, luncheon, date night, the office, special occasion, Halloween.
This vitamin enriched, feather-proof natural pigment lip color comes in a gold-plated bullet shaped casing reminiscent of those popular during the 40s and 50s. With red lips back in fashion lately, it is okay to splurge a little on Besame because you’ll use it often. Red lipstick can even save time; it is so bold that the rest of your make-up should be very minimal.
These are made to order, so allow 3-5 working days plus shipping time. Wear it again: afternoon tea with the girls, special occasion, wedding, Halloween.
Whether real or faux, new or old, pearls will always add a touch of class. Try looping a long strand around your neck a few times. Wear it again: wedding, date night, special occasion, the office, graduation.
Ditch the garter belt and try the modern tights version of this 1950s staple. You’ll save time and effort getting ready and no one will be the wiser. Wear it again: any time you would wear another pair of stockings; seams are just as sexy today.
In the fifties they had corsets. Today we have the panty-girdle, a more comfortable way to lift the butt, flatten the tummy, and create feminine curves. Wear it again: under dresses, trousers, skirts.
Neutral beige heels are always fashionable and these, with their bow detail, would have been popular in the 1950s as well. Wear them again: wedding, the office, date night, luncheon, special occasion, with skirts, dresses, or trousers.
These tights are a lifesaver. They are magnificent at flattening the tummy and thigh areas while lifting the butt. They helped me “lose” that extra inch preventing me from fitting into pre-pregnancy clothes and they work well under fitted dresses, skirts, and pants. Wear it again: formal occasions, date night, night out with the girls.
These pumps are so comfortable! Not to mention, this shade of green/blue is totally in this season. I found the deep plum color at ROSS last week for $49.99, so remember to check your local bargain store for deals.

If you thought moto jackets were just for punks and bikers, think again. Even the preppiest of moms can have a moto jacket all their own. The style remains the same but the patterns and fabric run the gamut from conservative khaki to feminine lace to everyday denim. No matter what your personality or taste, there’s a moto jacket for you.
Why should you want one? Because they are ultimately cool, always chic and one of the hottest trends of the year. For moms, they are as versatile and functional as a blazer. Dress yours up with a pencil skirt and booties, or go casual with a maxi skirt and t-shirt. No matter what you wear it with, you are bound to look (and feel) just a little sassier with it on.

If you are not aware of color forecasting, let me acquaint you with Pantone. Pantone is a company, which among other things sets the standard for colors worldwide. Twice a year the company hosts “a secret meeting of representatives from various nations’ color standards groups” to choose a color of the year. For 2013, it’s emerald green – which was a common sight on the fall runways. Additionally, they identify the colors that will dominate home decor and wardrobes each autumn and spring. See all of the fall 2013 hues in the photo above.
Just like fashion trends, incorporating color trends into your wardrobe will help raise your style quotient and lower your perceived age. Some colors, like Turbulence and Carafe, seem to reappear in one shade or another year after year. You can consider them neutrals, which will match with just about anything. Others, like Acai, Mykonos Blue, Emerald, Vivacious, Koi, and Linden are complimented by those neutrals and are a great way to brighten up your outfits.
Additionally, use these hues to highlight your best features. Acai is attractive on most skin tones but Lindon Green – not so much. Try utilizing that color in an accessory. Does Emerald or Mykonos Blue make your eyes pop and your skin look flawless? If so, put a little more of your budget towards these colors. If you look stunning in it and it is a classic piece, it will remain wearable for years to come.
Keep the brisk fall breeze off your neck in style with this simple, lovely scarf. Like scarves but out of creative ways to wear them? Try this video tutorial for ideas.
Wear two color trends at once – Koi and Vivacious are both present in this jeweled necklace. Wear as a statement necklace with either a black tee, black skinnies, and sneakers or a tailored black or grey dress.
A bright pop of seasonal Samba red will get you ready for the upcoming holidays.

Well, it seems I need to follow my own advice. You know how sometimes life just gets away from you and after telling your readers over and over how important it is to have a good bra your sister says, “Why do your boobs look so saggy?” and you realize you’ve been wearing the same two bras for FIVE years? Ok, maybe your scenario isn’t exactly like mine but I figure if the person who is preaching to you about quality undergarments can’t even keep track of her bra status then you, with your softball games, school orientations, play dates and general mom duties, may be in a similar situation and not know it either.
Look, we’re all human. Even stylists don’t look perfect all the time. So let’s give ourselves a break. That said though, once we do notice that something is amiss, we need to do ourselves a favor and take care of it, especially where breasts are concerned.
If your “girls” don’t look their best, what you wear won’t matter one bit. Take the photo above for example. The one on the left is me with the new bra on. Notice how the top lays perfectly and flatters my curves. On the right, I’m wearing the old bra. Yikes! It makes me look much wider on top and therefore, heavier. Additionally, my breasts appear saggier (more saggy than they actually are!). I am mortified by how long I was walking around looking like this. Lesson learned. Gulp.
In my previous bra post, I mentioned the store, Intimacy, which is still a great option for quality bras. However, since then, Nordstrom has started carrying European sizes and if you catch them during a sale you can get some high-quality bras for a fraction of the original price. Keep in mind though that it is WORTH THE MONEY to get a bra that fits correctly. You’ll look thinner and clothes will fit better which will make you feel more confident – and you can’t put a price on that.
For some excellent detailed info on bra fit and care, check out this article from bra expert, Linda Becker.

Let’s face it, moms need freedom of movement. We are always chasing children, picking up the house, getting in and out of the car, and running errands. All I can say is, thank goodness leggings have come back into our lives. Leggings wear well under airy tops, sweaters, and dresses making them a fabulous all-weather option and helping you stretch your wardrobe budget. They also hide white un-tan legs or, gasp!, unshaven legs, even cellulite. For something that seems so simple, the myriad of styles available can be a tricky beast, if you aren’t aware of a few guidelines. Here is a quick reference to help you pick the best pair for you.
ALWAYS cover the crotch! Most leggings create an awful camel toe. Not flattering. Cover it with a long top.
Inspect the opaqueness. When trying on leggings, wear your brightest pair of undies and bend over. Can you see through? Translucency does not necessarily rule out a pair of leggings, but it is important to know when putting together outfits. Again, we’re big fans of the Wunder Under Pant ($82) from Lululemon for a fitted, opaque legging with a wide waistband which eliminates muffin top and a hidden pocket for cards and keys.
Know your body. Do the leggings make your thighs or stomach look bulgy or lumpy? Try a different style or wear them with a top that skims over those areas.
Layer, layer, layer. The most fabulous legging get-ups layer a long shirt or dress with a jacket or sweater, and then add a statement scarf or necklace.
An excellent reference when putting together real-life outfits is Pinterest.com. I’ve put together a board on The Mommy Stylist Pinterest page with outfit ideas featuring leggings. There, you’ll find the images above and some additional resources. A quick scroll-through is sure to turn up an ensemble easily put-together with some items currently in your closet. Click on over and take a look around. Now, you’re ready to style those comfortable, stretchy leggings and get on with your flexibility-requiring life.

Don’t let the fact that you’re not a twentysomething supermodel keep you from dressing like one. Ok, so maybe you won’t wear the same bathing suit but you certainly can take a cue from Alessandra Ambrosio’s cute everyday mom style.
A button-down shirt is always classy and sophisticated, and when paired with this summer’s trendy cut-offs you’ve got an ensemble that says “casual cool.”
If you prefer longer shorts, consider getting a sleeveless button-down to balance out the fact that more of your legs will be covered. Or, at least, roll long sleeves up above your elbows. Then, just add some simple accessories like beaded bracelets, a watch and sunglasses.
If you want to elongate your legs and you won’t be walking far, try a pair of wedges. Otherwise, as Ms. Ambrosio shows us here, a stylish pair of flats will work just fine.
Lauren Ralph Lauren Button-Down Shirt ($89.50/Bloomingdales) – Sure, this is a great blouse but any button-down can work well with this look. They’re easy to find in cute patterns and at reasonable prices.

As a mother and a martial artist, I realize how important it is to get in a workout during the week. The stress relief and confidence that exercise brings to your routine is indispensable. Whether you’re there for the weights or the eye candy, a solid wardrobe for hitting the gym (or doing any kind of exercise) is a must.
If you’re going to splurge on anything in your wardrobe, let it be sports bras and athletic pants. A flattering pair of pants that isn’t see-through will do wonders for your ego. The same goes for a well-made athletic bra; who can focus on a workout with their breasts smacking them in the face? People tend to skimp on their exercise wardrobe because they aren’t trying to impress anyone. However, every woman I see yanking her tee-shirt down to cover her butt or camel toe mid-stride on the treadmill screams a different story. And, really, how many exercise outfits do you need? Surely you can buy yourself one quality get-up that won’t wear out from a couple of thighs rubbing together and get a little self-esteem out of the deal.
Lastly, how many of us run a few errands on the way home from the gym and, horrifyingly, end up seeing someone we know? At least this way, sweating aside, you’ll look put-together and your quality work out clothes will be holding you in (and up) in all the right places.
Yoga Pants ($98/Lululemon)
Kristin and I both agree Lululemon is the place to go for yoga pants. These two options, the Still Grounded Pant (5) and the Skinny Will Pant (6), are both figure-flattering and hold their shape forever. My Still pants from Lululemon have lasted through daily yoga practice and two pregnancies with little to no signs of wear and tear.
This lightweight bag has adequate space and a ventilated compartment for smelly gym shoes.
Sports Bra
These two options from Lululemon are great choices. The Energy Bra (3), $48, offers flexibility and support. For those who like to travel light, we recommend the Stuff Your Bra II (4), $52. An excellent feature for on-the-go moms. Three front pockets hold necessities, such as cash, IPOD, and cell phone.
This ASICS gym shoe offers gel for comfort and support and a mesh material for breathability. Endorsed by the American Podiatric Medical Association, they keep feet happy. A cross-training shoe offers flexibility; wear them for power strolling, tennis or weightlifting.
Slip these moisture absorbing sachets into your gym shoes post workout for some odor fighting action. A fresh smelling car is a must when carting your kids and their friends about town, even with sweaty gym clothes in the back. Not to mention, keeping shoes smelling fresh will help them last longer, saving you money. Use it again: Why stop at your gym bag? Add a pair to your kids’ sports bag and your husband’s ripe sneakers for natural deodorization.
Stylish with a cowl neckline and asymmetrical zip, this sweater has added length in the back for hiding any unseemly panty lines. Wear it again: Paired with skinny jeans or a flowy skirt, this unique jacket makes a statement.
This lightweight wrap cinches at the waist to show off those curves and skims lightly over any excess tummy. Wear it again: Layer over a dress or tee outside the gym.

Dear Mommy Stylist,
I have been desperately trying to figure out styles for myself, but have had no luck. Clothes are either too trendy, too pricey, or don’t fit right. It’s really discouraging and frustrating, to say the least. I was wondering if you could help.
Here are my stats: Mom of two (9 and 7), 36 years old, 6 ft, 175 lbs (straight body type, but with a little pudginess around the belly), 36 DD (large busted!). I typically wear solids – blue, black, sometimes purple or green. I’m stuck in jeans that don’t fit (too short, too tight), and shirts that don’t look good either.
I really don’t have any style sense. I try to mimic my friends, but they are all petite, small breasted girls, so when I copy their styles I just end up looking pregnant. My husband likes me to wear shorts to show off my long legs, fitted shirts that don’t hide my bust, and a more natural look. But I also am a stay-at-home mom who is at the elementary school every day picking up my kids and/or volunteering or substituting. So I don’t feel comfortable rolling up to school looking like a teenager. Anyway, what would you advise? I feel so overwhelmed!
Sincerely Desperate, Amber
Hi Amber!
It sounds like you have two main things to address, your large chest and your height.
First, let’s address the breasts.
As much as many women envy large breasts, those of us who have them know that they make dressing extra difficult. It is almost impossible to find tops that don’t make us look sleazy or pull open between the buttons. Unfortunately, people with large breasts have to get much of their wardrobe tailored because most shirts are made boxy and we look best when they are nipped in at the waist.
Try these tips to help make dressing your “assets” easier:
Get a good bra: Read our post about the importance of getting good bras. They can make you look 10 lbs lighter. No joke.
Try a scarf: If a particular top makes you feel self-conscious about your chest throw a long scarf on to cover it a bit. Like this. That way you are still flattering your figure but not showing it off to the world. Scarves also work to cover cleavage when a top is too low cut. But make sure the scarf is made of a thin material so it doesn’t add more bulk.
Wear black tops: They’ll make you look smaller. I know, who wants to wear a black top all the time? Well, you don’t have to but it’s a great thing to fall back on. Add color with accessories.
Choose v-necks: Crew necks will only emphasize your chest while a v-neck will flow better with your curves making them stand out less.
Tuck loose shirts: One other thing I do when I have a flowy shirt that makes me look pregnant, I tuck in just a small portion of the front of it. That way, it shows your figure a little more but still hides any muffin top. (That’s another hard thing for women with large chests, we have to wear fitted shirts but then our muffin top shows. I bought a pair of Spanx undies that work pretty well but just make sure you can’t see the line of them under your shirt. If so, don’t wear them.)
Find your celebrity body double: A good way to get outfit ideas is to find a celebrity who has your body shape and do an image search for them. You’ll be able to see in one fell swoop what flatters their figure and what doesn’t. Then, start trying to mimic some of those looks (well, just the good ones).
You definitely CAN be a stylish mom without looking like a hoochie.
Now, on to your long legs.
First of all, lucky you. Those of us who are short would kill for legs like yours! But, just like being well-endowed, being tall has its problems too, not he least of which is pant length. Making pants shorter is easy but there isn’t much you can do to lengthen them. And nothing says “I have no style” like a pair of floods. Fortunately, many stores are now getting on the “tall” band wagon. Here are just a few:
Simply Tall – They have a nice selection of cute active wear and leggings in long lengths.
On another note, regardless of how tall a woman is, none of us can wear the same pants with flats as with heels – unless they are skinny pants or the currently trendy, ankle pants. We all just have to accept that some of our trousers and jeans will have to be reserved for flats and others for heels.
Thanks for writing! I hope this info was helpful!

Making your own nursing pads is easy if you have the time. See instructions below.
Hello, readers! I am finally returning from maternity leave. My beautiful new daughter is healthy and happy at three months. My wardrobe, however, isn’t. While some of my pre-pregnancy clothes fit, they aren’t functional. My maternity clothes are too big and, again, not functional. It’s tough enough dressing a mom figure, and new-mom-who-happens-to-be-nursing figure, near impossible. However, I’ve been doing quite a bit of research on the subject and have found some indispensable items. They’ve been helpful to me and will hopefully do the same for you during this transitional time.
Not only is this bra comfortable, it’s fashionable, practical, and low-cut – perfect to wear with light, summery tops. The material is flexible enough to move out of the way so baby can be fed. Plus, with details like lace, bows and polka dots, they’re cute. Prefer a little padding? Try the lightly padded option.
Leaky boobs are definitely not one of the perks of motherhood. Cute, reusable nursing pads, like the ones pictured above, make it almost bearable. Crafty? Make some yourself. Cut same-size circles from fleece with pinking shears, to prevent the cotton from raveling, and sew together using a straight stitch.
Take it from someone who has tried every baby carrier on the market, Ergo Baby is the most comfortable. Plus, it is also useful for nursing. Raise the sun hood and you are completely covered. Your little one can be carried in the front, back or on the hip. Purchase a light color for summer – it will stay cooler.
My Belly Bandit helped slim me down to my original size in just a couple of months. It holds the tummy in to fit you into pre-pregnancy jeans. The bamboo option is breathable and comfortable in the heat.
High- or mid-rise shorts
These cuts will help hide a muffin top.
Bottoms that will shrink with you
Think drawstrings, leggings, wrap skirts, etc.
Want to avoid the hefty price tag of nursing-specific tops? Do what I did: head over to a retailer like ROSS or TJMaxx, where many brands are gathered in one place. Go through the racks and grab any shirts with:
flowy fabrics that are easy to lift up (You can wear a stretchy tank underneath to hide your midriff.)
Try them all on and you’re sure to find some winners all in one place. The less time spent dragging the children in and out of different retailers, the better. Once you know what fits and what works for you, you can supplement your nursing wardrobe by shopping online.

In our first post about ways to save time doing your hair we covered washing and drying. This week we’ll focus on styling.
Knowing my inability to get up in the morning, my husband has taught me many valuable time-saving tricks over the years that have helped get me out the door quickly without sacrificing style. Try them out and let us know what you think!
Wake Up With Soft Waves
Remember how we said in our first “Time-Saving Tips From My Hairdresser Husband” post to wash hair at night and let it dry? Well, if you want to wake up with pretty, soft waves there’s one more step involved. Well, several steps, but they’re easy. If your hair is long enough (and you may just have to find out by trial and error), flip your head over and comb hair out with a wide-toothed comb while you are still in the shower. Wrap hair in a towel and let it soak up the extra water for about 15 minutes. Then rub about a quarter’s worth of styling gel between your palms. (The hubs says to never just put product on your fingers, it must be rubbed between hands for a few seconds in order to activate it and evenly distribute it). Flip head over again and apply it to your locks starting at the ends. You really don’t need much at all at the roots. Then just let hair air dry for an hour or so. (The timing on this may take some trial and error – if I don’t let it air dry for a while my hair will still be wet when I take it down in the morning and that just adds more time to my routine because I have to blow it dry). While hair is still damp, flip head over yet again and split hair into two sections, one on the left and one on the right and twist each section over and over until you’ve created a little Princess Lea-type bun. Put a hair elastic around each bun to hold them in place through the night. Sleep on it and when you wake up you’ll have soft, sexy waves. (Note: I like to put my buns as far up near the top of my head as possible so I don’t feel them when I lay down to sleep. Also, you can make as many little buns as you’d like – the more you make the curlier your hair will be.)
Embrace Ponytails, Braids and Buns
When time is a factor, ponytails, braids and buns can be your best friends. Whether high or low, in the center or to the side, ponytails can be fun, sophisticated or sexy. If time permits, pull a small section of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the rubber band. Then secure it with a bobby pin or clear hair tie to camouflage it. Braid a ponytail and you’ve got yet another look or, braid the piece you wrap around to conceal the rubber band.
One of my favorite quick styles is a sock bun. With a touch of Mad Men and a dash of Audrey Hepburn, it can’t not look good. See my video on how to do it here. Have trouble getting your hair smooth when pulling it back into a ponytail? Me too. Well, here is a trick to get rid of those annoying “bumps.” Stick the pointy end of a tail comb (they are easy to find and very inexpensive) under the hair where the bump is until the point comes out on the other side. Then, slide it all the way to back to the ponytail holder. You may have to do it a few times but for the most part it will make the bump go away.)
Accessorize
Hair accessories are an inexpensive and easy way to do something different with your hair. I personally love the half up, half down style. Be sure to fasten hair in back with a simple barrette, tiny clip or bobby pins (no scrunchies or giant banana clips!). Integrate braids into it for a modern touch. To amp up a regular ponytail add a hair band or headband. Or, try one of those without a ponytail and just let hair hang free.
Part Ways
Change up your part once in a while, even when putting your hair up in a ponytail or headband. Move it further to the side or try it down the middle. It can make a big difference.
Check Your Rear
This may not be a time-saving tip per se but it is the most important tip of all. If you don’t do it, you could end up spoiling the work you put into getting ready: Do not ever leave the house without checking the back of your head (and really, the back of your whole body). How many times have you seen someone who looks like polished perfection from the front but when they turn around there is some embarrassing faux pas for the all world to see (a flat spot at the crown, a tag hanging out, panty lines)? Don’t let that be you.

Here’s what a bra-fitting at Intimacy can do for you.
Now that The Mommy Stylist has been around for a few years, we decided to occasionally re-post some of our earlier blogs as TMS Replays so that new readers can benefit from them as well. (And they can serve as reminders for those who have been with us from the beginning). Enjoy!
Ladies, let’s face it. As much as you love your children, and as much as you bonded while they were breast-feeding, those little angels wreaked havoc on your breasts. It is for that reason that a really good, well-fitting bra is a necessity! If your “girls” are saggy, no one needs to know. And believe me, when you have an ill-fitting bra, everyone knows. Most women, in fact, wear the wrong size bra, even those who haven’t had children. But don’t think you can just run over to Target and grab a new one. In fact, that’s the last place you should buy a bra.
There aren’t going to be many times when we tell you to spend a little extra money but in this case it is vital. A good bra could cost you $50-$100. MAKE THE INVESTMENT. A quality bra should last years and can make you look bigger if you’re small on top and smaller if you are big on top. The wrong size bra (especially on large-breasted women) can squeeze breasts out to the side, making you look wider. A bra that fits will keep that from happening which will make you look thinner. (Trust me, I speak from experience.)
So now that you’re convinced you need a good bra where do you get one? Well, for those of you who live in a city that has an Intimacy store, make some time to go there ASAP. They carry European sizes which have a much wider range than American sizes. Doesn’t that make more sense? How can every American woman fit into one of five or six sizes? Ridiculous. Intimacy has bra fit specialists who come in the changing room with you and make sure you leave with a perfect fitting bra. Don’t let the fact that another woman, who has insecurities about her body too, is going to see you topless. They are very professional and even have little silk robes in the changing room for you to put on while your “specialist” is out on the floor gathering bras for you to try on. Like I said, you will have to spend a bit more but it is totally worth it. You can be wearing the most gorgeous outfit ever but if your breasts are saggy you may as well be sporting a potato sack. It will ruin the entire outfit. Oh, and Intimacy does free alterations for the life of your bra so if they ever get stretched out or break, you won’t have to buy a new one. You can even make an appointment for a free bra fitting on their website. Since you are a busy mom that might be the best option for you. Then you won’t risk having to wait.
And for those of you who don’t have access to Intimacy, try Nordstrom, Macy’s or Victoria’s Secret. Ask someone to measure you and have them check the bras after you put them on to help assess if they fit correctly. Don’t trust yourself. You aren’t a bra expert, they are.
By the way, did you know bras are supposed to be hooked on the widest clasp? Then as the elastic gets stretched out (which it will in any bra) you are supposed to move in to the next set of hooks. I always bought mine in a size where I had to wear it on the tightest hooks. Totally wrong. Waaaay too big. Now you know.
And lastly, don’t ever wear a lacy or textured bra under a smooth, fitted top. There is nothing tackier than seeing lumps and lines under a shirt. And if you can see the line at the top of the cup through your shirt, you’re either wearing the wrong size or wrong style for that kind of shirt. I suggest getting a smooth black bra and a smooth nude bra. Those can be worn with anything and will be comfortable on a daily basis.

Fortunately, we don’t have to dry our hair like this anymore. Photo courtesy of Life.
I’ve learned many things being married to a hairdresser. One thing is that they have a much harder job than I ever imagined. They’re on their feet doing the same repetitive motions all day long, every day (not good on the body); they have to always be cheerful no matter how they feel personally, or how crabby or rude a client might be; they have to understand the geometry of a sphere (which is why I could never do the job); and they don’t get paid vacation or sick days – missing work means missing out on income. On top of all this, they need to have the skill to pull off a fabulous haircut or color job. Easy, right?
I do have to say though that being married to someone who does this for a living has afforded me some insider tips I wouldn’t otherwise have been privy to. In fact, there is so much information to share with you that I decided to break this post in two parts – washing and drying, and styling. The second installment will be published in a few weeks. If you haven’t already, sign up for an email subscription on the top, right-hand side of our home page so you don’t miss out on any future posts!
Washing and Drying Made Easy
I am NOT a morning person so anything that can help shorten the time between when I get up and when I leave the house is quickly adopted into my regimen. I want to look as good as everyone else, only in 20 minutes or less – and most moms are lucky if they get even that much time. The tips below have helped me immensely and they’ll hopefully do the same for you. Happy primping!
Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow
This is not short hair discrimination. In fact, my husband and I both love short hair. But the truth is, unless you have a pixie cut, short hair is not “easier hair.” In fact, a cropped coif takes more time and effort. Not only do you have to get it cut more often, which depletes time and money, but in order for it to look right you actually have to DO it. Longer hair however (at least below your shoulders), can be cute and stylish in mere minutes.
Do your wash at night
Skip the annoying blow dry process altogether and save yourself a lot of time (and cuticle damage) by washing your hair at night and letting it air dry. Then, in the a.m. all you need to do is a little styling.
Discriminate
This is one time when discrimination is good – only wash the parts of your hair that are dirty. Most of us first show grease at the roots while the ends can go without cleaning much longer. If you don’t want to go the dry shampoo route (see below), put your hair in a ponytail just below the crown. Then, place a shower cap over the ponytail (to make this easier, tuck in the ends of your hair into the ponytail holder so it is more of a bun) and then put a ponytail holder around the outside of the shower cap so, basically, it is only covering the bun. Then, in the shower, just get the top of your head wet and wash it. When you get out you’ll only have to dry that part.
We have all heard that washing and drying our hair daily causes damage, not to mention how much time it takes up, so learn to love dry shampoo. There are many brands out there now and even the least expensive ones work well. Just don’t spray them too close to your head or you’ll have a big messy blob to contend with. Bumble and bumble offers dry shampoo in a variety of natural shades from light yellow to red, grey, brown and black. A matching color isn’t really necessary but it is nice. Scratch your head and you’ll have to clean it out from under your fingernails but hey, that’s a small price to pay for saving yourself an hour in the morning.
Blow Dry Immediately
I used towel dry my hair a bit (especially my bangs) right after getting out of the shower. Then, I’d wait until after doing my make-up to blow-dry it. Both of these are no-nos. Towel drying is damaging, and the longer you wait to dry your hair the longer it has to start to dry on its own, in the wrong direction. Once I stopped doing these two things my hair looked infinitely better.
Go all the way
Does your hair ever look good right when you finish blow-drying it but within a few hours it’s going in all kinds of odd directions? That’s because you didn’t completely dry it. Hair can look dry even when it isn’t. The hubs says that once you think it is time to turn off the dryer, don’t. Keep at it for several more minutes. Otherwise, all that work will be for naught.
(Did you like this post? If so, sign up for an email subscription to The Mommy Stylist – on the top right-hand side of the home page – so you don’t have to remember to check the site. We’ll just email you whenever we post something new.)
How many times have you carried a purse you knew didn’t look right with your outfit simply because 1) you didn’t have one that would match, 2) you didn’t have time to change purses (we can help you with that in this post), or 3) you didn’t have one appropriate for the occasion. We’ve all been there but with just a few basic handbag styles in your arsenal, you should be able to avoid that fashion faux pas in the future.
A mom needs a purse that is versatile, affordable, stylish, big enough to carry all the necessities, and small enough that it won’t weigh her down. There are a million options out there and we’ve narrowed them down to six that should cover all your needs. Let’s get started.
The Everyday Handbag
For an everyday “go to” handbag, something in a neutral shade will serve you best. Look for black, grey or variations of brown (chocolate, camel, nude). These colors will be the most versatile and compliment just about any outfit. Either a shoulder bag or satchel (my personal favorite – they just make me feel more sophisticated) will work – it just depends on your preference.
For a plethora of reasons, many of us buy our dressy dresses in black – they’re slimming, don’t show stains, and are less noticeable when we wear them again and again (which really shouldn’t matter anyway but hey, we all think about it). Wearing black provides the perfect opportunity to go all out with your handbag. Bright colors, shimmery sequins, beads, and patterns will all work well with basic black.
You know those days when you look in the mirror after getting dressed and realize that everything your wearing is a solid color? You wish you had the time to put something more exciting togetherbut Emma has to get to soccer practice and you have a thousand errands to run so you just “deal with it” and feel a little dumpy all day. An easy way to counter this is by toting a fun, patterned purse. Find one that you love, one that makes you smile, and watch those “outfit blues” fade away.
For those times when carrying a satchel or shoulder bag will look ridiculous (i.e. a street fair, a sporting event, a picnic) the cross body swoops in to save the day. I prefer a larger style as they can accommodate a water bottle, a light jacket, etc. but the size is up to you and your needs. Like the everyday handbag, a neutral tone may serve you best but sometimes a touch of color or a fun pattern will do the trick. Just make sure it matches your outfit.
Every woman needs a day clutch for “girly events” like showers and luncheons as well as things like afternoon weddings and graduation parties. They’re just a little dressier than your everyday handbag and add an air of city chic to your look. (Although they’re called “day” clutches they can be used at night for events that are too informal for an evening bag.)
Colorful handbags can serve the same purpose as patterned ones. However, they’re easier to pair with busy clothing so you’ll be out the door, feeling fabulous, in no time.

By Kristin Hull Following the trends (in a grown-up and sophisticated way, of course) is one of the best ways to look put-together. One of our favorites this season is the ankle pant. Longer than cropped pants but shorter than regular pants, this versatile style can be worn by any body shape. Even better, they’ll work with a wide variety of shoes from high-heeled or flat sandals to pumps, oxfords or Mary Janes. And because of this, transitioning them from work day to weekend couldn’t be easier.
As you can see in some of the photos above, rolling long pants up to ankle length is just fine. If you already have some skinnies or straight-leg pants in your closet, you can easily get the look without spending a cent.
And lastly, for outfit ideas, take note of what the celebs in the photos are wearing with their ankle pants. Blazers, sweaters and tees all mesh well to create a sleek, chic ensemble you can be proud of.

Well ladies, we’ve once again come upon that dreaded time of year – swimsuit season. But, it needn’t be as bad as you think because we’ve found some figure-flatting and forgiving (i.e. gut- and butt-hiding) styles to make you feel like your nineteen-year-old self again. Remember though, you’ll have to shell out some extra dough for a quality bathing suit but it will be well worth it. After having kids (as well as getting older) those $10 bikinis at Forever 21 won’t quite do the trick. This is one instance where you absolutely must splurge for quality’s sake. Plus, a good swimsuit should last you a few years. And it will no doubt make you look better than you thought you could. And when you’re practically naked, it doesn’t get better than that.
Be sure to read the descriptions below to find out which designs will show off your best qualities and hide your worst.
Betsey Johnson Beauty Mark Swimdress ($148/Everything But Water): The black vertical lines help elongate the body while the non-frumpy skirt hides the hips and rear.
Karla Coletto Red Draped Bandeau Swimsuit ($281/South Beach Swimsuits – free shipping on orders over $100): If you’re bigger in the middle this is the suit for you; the loose, draped material hides just about everything between the chest and hips.
Tommy Bahama Scroll Paisley Swimsuit (now $85.20, reg. $98, South Beach Swimsuits – free shipping on orders over $100): The busy pattern and rouching in the middle will make you look smaller than you are.
“Black Tie” Skirted Swimsuit ($138/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): We love the way the retro look is modernized on this adorable style. Cover your upper thighs, rear and hips while showing off your assets. Again, rouching will camouflage.
Athena Harbor Island Swimsuit ($81.99/Zappos – free shipping both ways!): Apple body types will love this swimsuit as it covers their main problem area.
Motel 50s Style Halter Swimsuit ($59.40/Asos – free shipping both ways!): The black vertical panels on the sides of this design will make you appear narrower.
Michael Michael Kors Racerback Scuba One-Piece ($140/Neiman Marcus – free shipping through 5/31 with code MAYFS): Like the previous swimsuit, the white vertical side panels are slimming as are the grey panels on the legs.
Carmen Marc Valvo Malawi Floral-Print Swimdress ($159/Neiman Marcus – free shipping through 5/31 with code MAYFS): This bathing suit is a triple threat: the fifties-style fitted skirt, busy pattern and rouching will keep those soft spots well hidden.
Magicsuit Draped Swimsuit ($148/Macy’s): Another great suit for the apple figure; the loose, draped material will camouflage the middle.

Since joining The Mommy Stylist team, I have received several inquiries about how to mix colors and patterns. Often viewed as daunting and tricky, most women tend to shy away from bold outfits while admiring them on others. Climbing out of the safe-zone and into the realm of color and pattern, even texture, is an achievable goal. All it takes is a little inspiration.
How do designers and stylists come up with their ideas? You’ll be hard-pressed to find even one without an inspiration folder of some kind. Inspiration can come from anywhere. If you see colors, patterns, or textures that you love together, take a picture of them and keep it in your phone so next time you’re out shopping you can refer to it, or, if you find images online, put them on your Pinterest page. In my collection, you’ll find images from style bloggers, retailers, real people’s outfits (ask first), celebrities, interior design, television, nature, my closet, etc.
If you need more concrete rules, take a lesson from art and use the color wheel. Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel; secondary colors, set of three equally spaced from each other; and split complementary colors, a color plus the two colors on either side of its complement, are combinations that will work well together.
For patterns and textures, I definitely recommend starting with your inspiration images. Putting your own spin on someone else’s idea and adapting it to suit your wardrobe and body shape is one of the easiest ways to pay homage and look great. Another way to get going is to pick a neutral color scheme and layer. Planning on wearing a black tank under that cardigan? Try a black lace tank instead. How about some faux leather leggings as an alternative to black jeans (just make sure to wear a top that is long enough to cover your rear)? They would be unexpected and will add some personality to the outfit.
The Example:
The collection pictured above, originally created as an option for the How to Wear Patterned Socks post, is a great example of mixing color and pattern. The main colors, blue, yellow, and orange, follow the rules of color theory. Blue and orange are complimentary colors; blue and yellow are secondary colors. The beige cable knit cardigan and suede booties are neutral, easy to add into almost any outfit. The bangle, socks, and tee work together because none of the patterns are too overwhelming and the colors function well together. The neutral colored cardigan is a great way to add texture and pattern to the outfit because, being all one color, it does not distract from the rest. The gold-tone jewelry warms up the ensemble and plays off of the accent colors of yellow and orange.

I need to find a dress to wear to a semi-formal dinner when I accompany my husband on a business trip. It’s a golf weekend in Pebble Beach in June for executives and their spouses. I know how to dress for my job, for being a mom, for hanging out – but the corporate wife thing is totally out of my comfort zone. I want to look nice, but still like me. I already have a black dress so I’d like to find something colorful as an alternative.
Julee
(We contacted Julee to get a little more information about her likes and dislikes and found out her favorite stores are Zara, Loft and H&M; her favorite designer is Marc Jacobs; she likes the fifties “Mad Men” style, prefers solid-colored garments and is not into florals, pastels or anything too trendy. She has a slim apple-shaped figure and needs a style that will hide her post-baby tummy.)
Dear Julee,
Based on everything you told us, we’ve found some great dresses that fit the “business-appropriate” criteria and are under your $200 price limit. The important thing is to look attractive but not sexy, and stylish but not flashy. And because you’re child-free for the night, take the opportunity to wear high-heels, or at least wedges. If you need something to keep away the chill at night, try a waist-length blazer or cardigan. Lastly, be sure to apply moisturizing cream to your legs; it will make them look, and feel, silky smooth all night.

A bag may well be one of the most important accessories in every mom’s wardrobe. Whether it’s for lugging around diapers, sports equipment, work documents, school supplies, or just the essentials, we all need something fabulous and functional. In this mom-to-mom series, I’ll show you what’s in my bag and hopefully, inspire you to do the same. What better way to help each other out than by sharing our secrets?
In the coming months, watch for posts on my everyday bag, computer bag and wallet, as well as those of some of our readers. (If you’re interested in spilling your bag, email us at themommystylist@mommystylistblog.com. And remember, this isn’t just for moms with babies, we want to know what moms with older kids have in their bags, too.) Now, let’s get to it!
The first photo above is my primary diaper bag, shared with my husband (so it can’t be too girly). With a new baby on the way, due any day now, the contents (and even the bag itself) may soon change. Should that happen I’ll be sure to let you know.
Diaper Bag (19-month-old daughter):
1. Kinies Classic Diaper Bag (with added zipper): Can be carried either as a shoulder bag or messenger bag. Great organization with many pockets. The only drawback is that it can get bulky and heavy.
2. Nuk Ladybug Sippy Cup: The best transition cup that we’ve found and we’ve tried a lot. Soft nipple and relatively few leaks with this bottle.
5. Medela Nipple: As frazzled new parents, we managed to forget to pack a nipple once during the week that our daughter was recovering from tongue-tie and couldn’t nurse. Chaos ensued, but never again. We now have an emergency nipple in the Ju-Ju-Be pacifier pod, just in case.
6. Ju-Ju-Be Pacifier Pod: Inside, there are elastic bands on each half to hold a pacifier in place. Currently, we have an extra medela nipple on one side and an extra soothie pacifier on the other. I have also used this case to discretely carry nipple-shields for nursing.
7. Equate Vitamins A & D Ointment: Purchase it in the adult diaper section of the store to save a couple bucks. It’s the same product, minus the picture of a baby.
8. Carter’s Flannel Lap Pad: These little lap pads make the most absorbent changing pads, burp cloths, and waterproof crib liners (in the bigger size).
13. Scented Diaper Disposal Bags: Buy at your local Dollar Tree, not for the crazy $5+ listed on Amazon. They’re great for holding messy clothes and bibs while out and about as well as containing the smell of poopy diapers until a trash can is found. We also use them in place of a wet-bag for bringing home the cloth diapers to wash.
14. Gerber Receiving Blanket: These are so small and thin that we found them to be mostly useless as receiving/swaddling blankets. However, they work well for laying over a restroom changing table for a cleaner surface (one-sided printing makes it easy to remember which side is dirty, which is clean; between washes, fold with clean side out so dirt doesn’t spread). Throw on grass for changes at the park.

I wear a lot of black. In fact, my closet is filled with black clothes. I’d like to wear more color but don’t have the budget to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. How can I brighten things up without spending a fortune?
Denise
Dear Denise,
Have no fear! Your problem is easily solved – accessorize! Inexpensive accessories are everywhere. From Target to TJ Maxx, you’ll find scarves, jewelry, hats, handbags, shoes, jackets and more. And the best part is that these pieces can be utilized over and over with various outfits, dressy or casual. We’ve put together some examples in the photo above. So next time you’re feeling blah in black, dig into your new bag of colorful tricks for a pop of color that will put a spring in your step.

Don’t let April showers put a damper on your wardrobe. Instead, embrace the weather by donning fashionable rain gear and hitting the pavement in style. We’ve put together a couple of on-trend outfits perfect for the upcoming deluge. Enjoy keeping dry while looking fabulous!

Hunter ‘Original Tall’ Gloss Rain Boot ($135/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): These may be a little pricey but there’s no skimping on a rain boot where quality counts. Plus, you’ll wear these for years to come; it’s not like they’re a fleeting trend you’ll have no use for later.
BCBGeneration Coat, Knit-Sleeve Funnel-Neck Belted Trench ($134.99, reg. $180/Macy’s): Like the rain boots, anything that keeps the elements at bay is worth paying more for. It could be the difference between catching a cold and staying healthy. A sophisticated trench will be a lifelong friend.

Graduation parties often run the gamut from casual get-togethers to sassy soirées, but graduation ceremonies almost always fall into the dressier category. We’re not talking cocktail attire but rather, a pretty daytime ensemble that would also work for a shower or luncheon. Think sundresses with high-heeled sandals or a pair of bright-colored ankle pants (not jeans) with a white blouse and some nude pumps. Or, think like we did: try an a-line above-the-knee skirt with a lacy top and a skinny belt. Since those pieces are the picture of femininity, we balanced them out with a motorcycle-style bouclé jacket and modern accessories. A leopard print wedge finishes off the outfit a classic touch.
Bouclé Moto Jacket ($32.80/Forever 21): Too rock and roll for you? Try a cardigan or a blazer – just make sure they don’t fall past your waist.
Chain Patterned Hinge Bracelet ($8.80/Forever 21): Do the unexpected and wear this bracelet on the same wrist as the watch.
Square Buckle Hip Belt ($4.80/Forever 21): This skirt comes with a blue ribbon attached at the waist. If the color doesn’t work with the outfit, simply cover the ribbon with a belt that does.
Midi Skirt in Texture ($58.19/Asos): The texture of this skirt gives it the “wow” factor.
Calvin Klein Saxton Leopard Print Shoe ($71.99/6pm – free shipping!): Wedges are easier to walk in than heels, especially when chasing little ones around or traipsing through grass.

A longtime staple on little girls’ clothes, ruffles often get the bad rap of being too young, cutesy, and frilly to be taken seriously. These grown-up sexy ruffles, however, are nothing of the sort. They’ll add a flirty, feminine touch to your spring closet. From summery organza dresses to fun accessories, keeping up with this trend couldn’t be easier.
1. Floral ruffle dress (sale $42, reg. $60/Kohl’s): This lightweight, airy dress will create curves and skim over any tummy pooch.
2. You and Me Forever dress ($59.99/ModCloth): A closet staple perfect for casual occasions. Pair with black leggings. Free US shipping on orders over $50, free returns and exchanges.
3. Ruffled one-piece playsuit (sale $49.50, reg. $99/Lastcall): Perfect for chasing the kids around the park or beach.
5. Yellow polka-dot shirtdress (sale $39, reg. $60/Kohl’s): This bright and cheery dress is perfect for the warm weather ahead. Ditch the sloppy ribbon tie and wear with a belt instead.
6. Petit military ruffle jacket ($69.50/Macy’s): Throw this three/quarter sleeve jacket over your summery dresses to fend off cool breezes. The ruffle detail adds just the right touch of softness to a usually masculine style.
7. Hello, Pretty Bird dress ($49.99/ModCloth): A soft, colorful dress that will nip in the waist and skim over any tummy flaws. Free US shipping on orders over $50, free returns and exchanges.
8. Ruffled sleeveless blouse ($41.56/ASOS): The vertical center-line that the ruffles on this blouse create draws the eye downward and elongates the body. Free shipping both ways. Free shipping both ways.
10. Lucky Brand World Beat maxi skirt ($84/Zappos): Comfortable, casual and on-trend. Wear it to the park, beach, play date, or camping. Free 1-day shipping, free returns.
11. Jessica Simpson ruffle trench ($70.99/6pm): A new spin on the classic trench. You’ll be ready to take on those April showers. Free shipping.
15. Betsey Johnson Floral Explosion Crossbody purse ($58/Zappos): Fun, colorful and girly, spice up your outfit with an interesting pattern. Wear it to lunch with the girls, brunch, or escorting the kids around town. Free shipping and returns.

Before you dismiss florals as too frou-frou or too “old lady” take a look at our picks and you may just change your mind. From vintage prints to modern, there’s something for everyone. Florals come in varying sizes, colors, patterns and styles; they work on all body types and will last through spring and summer.
14. Belted Romper (on sale $49, reg. $119/Charlotte Russe)

Love stripes? Then, lucky for you because all types, widths, and colors are on trend this spring. Stock up, but save big with these Mommy Stylist-approved (see the TMS Mission Statement) pieces. Wearing stripes can be tricky; thick horizontal stripes can make you look wider while thin ones won’t. Multi-directional stripes can be too flashy for some so tone them down by layering with a solid colored cardigan or blazer. Vertical stripes will add length and create a slimming effect. Diagonal and v-shaped stripes can be forgiving in curvy areas, especially at the hip and waist. Be sure to pay attention in the fitting room mirror and go with what looks best on your figure (find your Body Shape here). Wary of stripes but still want to be on trend? Try a striped shoe, necklace, or handbag.
3. Pop Stripe High-Low Dress ($44.95/Amazon): This dress represents many of the season’s trends. Bright colors, stripes, florals, a faux-leather belt, and lace blend seamlessly together to create a unique look. Apple body shapes should ditch the belt and add some leather with handbag or shoes.
4. Zagging Rights Dress ($49.99/ModCloth): Cut-outs draw the eye up, a fitted waist and flared skirt accentuates curves. Try it with a brightly colored belt.
8. Border Stripe Cardigan (sale $34.99, reg. $59.90/The Limited): Use code “Fifty” for a 50% discount on up to three items. This cardigan is great if you ate short-waisted as it will elongate the torso. The cinched waist will accentuate a tiny waist and add curves to straight figures.
9. Kensie Striped Dress ($99/Zappos): Free one-day shipping. Sheer and striped, the Kensie dress falls into two spring trends. It is lightweight and perfect for the upcoming warm weather.
10. Always Be Cozy Sweater ($42/Lulu’s): Free shipping and free returns. Springy pastel colors make this sweater a good choice for days that are still a bit chilly. The loose shape will cover up a tummy and the length in back will hide those buns.
14. Striped Sleeve Sweater ($46.90/The Limited): Use code “Fifty” for a 50% discount on up to three items. Striped sleeves are a fantastic way to wear horizontal stripes without risking looking wide in the middle.

Do you always see other women wearing color and envy them? Do you wonder if you can pull it off? Well, you can. This spring one of the hottest trends is bright colors so now is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and dive in. One of my favorite pairings is a bright hue with a neutral like black, grey, white, khaki or navy blue. You don’t have to be a neon sign, just one piece of color will do. We’ve gathered up some of the cutest Mommy Stylist-approved pieces we could find. Click the links to order them online or print the photo and put it in your purse to look for them, or something similar, the next time you’re out and about.
People love color in general. And we can bet that if you do try the trend you’ll get compliments all day long. You may even inspire a few other moms to do the same.

Don’t be afraid to try sheers this spring. Sheer fabric can make an outfit look, and feel, a bit breezier; add interest to that otherwise plain top; or give a little peek of skin without going tank-top-teen-trashy. They’ll add softness and femininity to leather and create a free, bohemian look with jeans. Add some sass to a little black dress with sheer stockings (photo 3) and a fun scarf (photo 4).
There are a few things to keep in mind when wearing sheers. First, please, cut out the tags, including the laundry tag on the side seam. Nothing looks tackier and ruins the statement a sheer piece makes than tags showing through. Also, pay particular attention to undergarments when wearing sheer fabrics. Unless you are deliberately showing your bra, and it is a beautiful bra in perfect condition, don’t do it. Try wearing a strapless bra or a bra with invisible straps under a dress or shirt with sheer shoulders. (Check out our previous post on choosing the right bra here). Under a completely sheer top (photo 1), try a fitted tank in the same color, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, in a contrasting shade. Another fun way to work a completely sheer top is to wear a printed tank underneath.
1. Blue Sheer Sweater (sale $39.99, reg. $59/Macy’s): Layer over a fitted matching, white, or printed tank or tee.
2. Sheer and Lace Button Top ($24.80/Forever 21): A white tank will look best under this top. Be sure to wear a smooth white or nude bra. No bumpy lace bra texture or odd-colored bra showing through, please.
3. Sheer dot tights (sale $12.99, reg. $19.90/The Limited): Add some personality to an otherwise mundane dress or skirt with a pair of patterned tights.
4. Sheer Chevron Scarf (sale $29.99, reg. 39/6pm): A scarf is a risk-free way to update an outfit quickly. They can be layered over other pieces, tied to a handbag, or wrapped in hair.
5. Sheer and crochet top ($44/Lulu’s): Over a white tank or bathing suit top, this cute number goes well with leather or blue jean shorts.
6. Sheer Lace Yoke Top (sale $25.99, reg. $45/6pm – free shipping!): Worn with a strapless or invisible strap bra, this top is great for moms because it adds interest to the shoulders while skimming over the midsection.
8. Celebrate Your Soul Top ($59.99/Modcloth – free shipping and returns!): This fun, sexy top will certainly make a statement. Allow the texture to stand out against a fitted white tee, or a tee in a contrasting color (burnt orange, perhaps).
9. Sheer yoke dress ($39.95/H&M): Remember your strapless bra for this fun spin on the little black dress.
10. Tie Top ($34.90/The Limited): Cute for the office or dressed down for a school meeting.
11. One-shoulder Lavender Dress ($32.99/Charlotte Russe): This is a good option for a pear or straight shaped body as the asymmetrical top creates visual interest, drawing the eye up. The belt accentuates a small waist while the lace at the bottom draws the eyes down to shapely legs and away from strong curves, or the lack thereof, in the hip region. It will look best on apple bodies without the belt.
12. White dress with sheer stripes ($44/Lulu’s): If you need a dress for a spring or summer event, look no further. This one is perfect for Easter, a graduation, wedding, baby shower, etc.
14. Sheer Flutter Top (sale $54.99, reg. $99.50/6pm – free shipping!): This top can be dressed up with black skinnies and heels for an evening out or try it with jeans and sandals. A matching tank worn underneath will hide your bra.
15. “Sheer” tennis shoes ($29.95/H&M): Wear barefoot or with colored socks. Airy sneakers will help keep feet cool on those hot summer days.

Sometimes, when people think of lace they think of grandmothers and bygone eras. But the truth is, that when done right, lace is lovely, super-feminine – and yes, even fashionable. This spring the classic fabric has been modernized with color. Blues, reds, pinks, greens, oranges and yellows abound. And it doesn’t always have to be dressy. Try a lace top and jeans for a play date, lace shorts with a tee for a picnic, or a casual dress with a pair of lace flats for running errands.

By Lisa Miller As moms, fitting everything into the day and looking good is a challenge. There is always something to clean, cook, mend, prepare, etc. Remember, taking at least five minutes for you is important for your mental health and physical stamina. Ever notice how you feel better, stronger when you look your best? Ever notice how run down and tired you feel when you are still in your pajamas or sweats at three in the afternoon? What a difference!
Today, I’m going to share my 5 minutes and out the door secrets with Cinderella and the rest. My ideas are revolutionary, sit down and get your pen and paper. It may just be the solution you need to feel your best.
Dear Mommy Stylist,
While the kids are at school, I often find myself in sweats, with no makeup, cleaning the house. Time gets away from me when I’m cleaning- there is so much to do and so little time. I always end up rushing out the door last-minute to pick up the kids from school. I’m tired of looking harried, dirty, and run down. When I see the other parents at the pick-up location, I’m embarrassed. How do they all have time to look so good! My question is: How do I go from scrubbing the floor to presentable and out the door in about 5 minutes time?
Desperate Cinderella
One of my favorite on-the-go looks is jeans, a tee, and a blazer. You look casual yet put-together at the same time. The look works with all sorts of shoes – flats, heels, boots, tennis, dressy sandals. Add a necklace or a scarf, bangles, and a bag. You’re ready to go.
As for make-up, identifying the bare minimum you need to look complete and feel good is the key. I find that a little eyeliner, tinted lip balm, and perfume are all that I need to feel like I’m set to face the day. If you can narrow your routine down to 3-5 necessary steps, you’ll be all set. Adding a touch of color to my lips, highlighting my eyes, clean-looking hair, and smelling nice are my essentials. Following this simple routine helps me to get ready and out the door in record time.
Lisa’s Tips for Looking Fabulous in a Hurry:
1. Set up a beauty center in your foyer.
Hanging on the wall in my entrance hall is a mirror with a little shelf and hooks. On the shelf sits a pretty bottle containing dry shampoo (read our post about dry shampoo, here). Next to that is a decorative bowl containing a small roller perfume, Burt’s Bees Hibiscus tinted lip balm, an eyeliner pencil, and my favorite, everyday jewelry. From the hooks hang my house keys, work keys, and car keys.
2. Invest in some sturdy hangers and hang a few outfits.
Like to wear those jeans with that tee, this blazer, and this necklace? Or, that skirt with those tights, this jacket, that chain, and these bangles? Hang them all together. Grab the hanger and you’re set. No more digging around and panicking trying to put together an outfit in five minutes time. If you know that these situations arise often, keep a couple of ready-to-go outfits on hand in your coat closet. No one outside your door will know that you prepared to meet the world from your foyer.
3. Keep your shoes, keys, and purse by the front door.
In my front closet, I keep a pair each of flats, boots, and heels. These are my three most versatile pairs. They are all comfortable and work with most of my wardrobe. Also in this closet are hooks to hang my purses on. I have my wallet (which also has a little strap and enough space for a phone, lip balm, and keys), my everyday cross-carry bag, my dressier shoulder bag, and my diaper bag. I merely grab my wallet and, depending on where I’m going, either head out the door or toss it into one of my other bags. Keeping your essentials in one bag and transferring that between purses is an easy way to switch in a jiffy. See Kristin’s post on this topic, here. As I mentioned before, my keys are hooked to the underside of my “beauty center,” but it is easy to add a hook just inside your front door.
That’s it. Simple.

Spring trends moms can get into (literally): Asian Influence at Etro, Sheer Fabric at Sophie Theallet, Sporty Dresses at Rag and Bone, Ruffles at Givenchy. (Photos courtesy of style.com)
Even though some of you are still bundled up in a winter coat, spring will be here before we know it. So, now is the perfect time to familiarize yourself with the upcoming trends. I know, I know, you’ve already got enough on your mind. But, don’t worry; we’re here to give you the bullet points and make it easy. It’s vital that you know what the trends are in order to be “that mom” – the one who always looks modern and sophisticated, even when she’s dropping the kids off at school. To that end, wearing outfits that are current is the most effective way to look (and feel) your best.
Each season brings many trends, but not all of them are appropriate for a mom. So, we’ve sorted through the list and singled out the ones that will be most conducive to your lifestyle. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be able to identify the latest styles in stores and make purchases with confidence. (Watch for our upcoming shopping posts focusing on some of these trends in the coming weeks.)
Wearable spring fashions for moms:
Stripes (of all colors, not just black and white)
Sheer fabric
Ruffles (especially unique, architectural ones)
Leather
Floral/botanical prints
Colored lace
Black and white patterns
White (depending on the age of your children, this may or may not be an option)
Asian influence
Sporty dresses
Bright hues (especially royal blue)
And speaking of colors, every year Pantone sets the standard for the colors for each season. Below are the shades for spring 2013. Keep these in mind when shopping for your new on-trend clothes and accessories.

Let’s talk about socks for a minute. Colored or patterned socks are an often overlooked accessory that moms could easily take advantage of. Children can’t tear them off of you, they won’t show dirt like white will, and if your outfit is neutral or monochromatic, they can add a little excitement and a lot of style. At prices starting from about $1, they are also a great accessory for those on a conservative “I don’t want to spend a ton of money on something fun that can be easily ruined” budget. You already have to put socks on in the morning, especially in a cold or rainy climate, so what is the difference between pulling on a pair of bold, playful ones or a pair of plain, neutral ones? Not much, if you know how to wear them fashionably.
Today, I’m going to show you a fail-proof way to wear those cute socks that you have stashed away. You know, those socks that you purchased because they were on clearance for a price that you just couldn’t pass up . . . but never wore out, except disguised under jeans and tall boots, because you just couldn’t think of a way to wear them that wouldn’t look laughable. Pull them out and let’s get started.
The key to this look is to keep the basic outfit neutral or monochromatic so that the socks stand out. Mixing fun socks with neutral pieces creates the most options since there are few chances for garish clashing. Remember, as with any new look, the trick to pulling it off is to act like you mean it and be confident that you look amazing. If you say that you are going to show off your socks and then only roll your pants so that a sliver is showing- it’s going to seem like a mistake. So, roll those cuffs up, lift your chin and strut your stuff. You’re fun and you know it, why shouldn’t your outfit show it?

Storing essentials in pretty cosmetic bags makes switching purses quick and easy. ($14.99-$34.99/Target)
For most women, changing purses each day seems like more trouble than it’s worth. I used to feel that way. My biggest fear was that something important would be left behind in a pocket or a hidden corner. I felt this way for good reason; it had happened to me on several occasions. But the more I started to work in fashion, the more I realized what a difference matching my handbag to my outfit made. It’s just as important an accessory as any other. And a mismatched one can ruin even the most stylish ensemble. Additionally, a purse shouldn’t just work with an outfit based on color or pattern; size, shape and appropriate-ness must be taken into account as well. There’s nothing tackier than seeing a women in her workout clothes carrying a dressy purse or, God forbid, vice versa.
Fortunately, most of us know the difference between a casual and a dressy purse and when to carry each. I think the problem lies in the fact that no mom has time to switch out her purses. It’s not that she doesn’t want to or doesn’t know that she should, it’s that she’s usually running out the door with nary a moment to brush her hair. But, if you want to be the cutest, most stylish mom you can be, it would behoove you to swap purses at least some of the time. As you’ve seen, we at The Mommy Stylist always try to offer handbag options that are functional and versatile so that you don’t have to make the switch every single day, but on the occasions that call for it, we have a simple solution that will ensure you won’t leave anything behind: You need to become a bag lady.
No, not that kind of bag lady. But a bag lady nonetheless. Basically, you’re just going to put everything from your purse into smaller bags. You can use one big cosmetic bag for the whole shebang like I do, or try a few of varying sizes. The whole point is that when it comes time to change purses you won’t have to dig through every last pocket to transfer it all over; just move the bags from one purse to the next. Voila! I like mine to be clear so I can easily find what I’m looking for in them but you can use whatever color or pattern you prefer. But no Ziplocs! The whole point is to make you look (and therefore feel) better. You will not feel confident shuffling through a mishmash of sandwich bags. Another bonus is that this system will actually keep your purses more organized. And what mom couldn’t benefit from little more organization?

In response to our recent post on looking fashionable in sports apparel, we received a request for a special dad feature and thought, why not? I mean, his style can certainly affect your style. And if you’re working so hard on yours then maybe we should get him polished up a bit too…
Dear Mommy Stylist,
Your stuff is great. Thanks for helping all the sports moms out here look good. Maybe you could consider a dad feature. Some of those guys need some real help!
Okay, ladies, we hear you. Now that you are looking so fine out there on the sports field, it’s becoming more and more obvious that your significant other is cramping your style. If you’re lucky, your husband is probably dressed something like this:
If you’re not so lucky, it’s probably more like one of these:
We know what you’re really looking for, a sharp dressed man who really knows how to show off his team spirit. Am I right? Allow me to present the sports dad of your dreams. Drumroll, please! Dum, da, da, dum . . .
Just kidding, but you’ve got to give him props for trying. Seriously, though, we’ve scoured the internet and found the true sports dad of your dreams and I will present him to you in just a moment. Before we get started however, I want to throw out a warning. Not yet having sports-aged children or participating much in sports myself, I turned to the men of my acquaintance for some help on this touchy subject. I say “touchy” because that is just what it is for most men. It’s hard enough to convince a lot of guys to dress nicer, but when it comes to sports it’s near impossible – at least without a fight.
Men usually dress the way they do for sports games for one of two reasons:
The outfit they are wearing is their “lucky game day outfit.” They were dressed exactly this way when the team had their first win; their kid hit their first ball; scored their first touchdown; etc. If they change it, they’ll lose the luck. Guys tend to be superstitious about sports.
It’s comfortable this way and takes them two minutes to get dressed. They don’t see the point in getting all dressed up to go sit at a dirty, dusty field for three hours. They don’t want to waste the time it takes to roll up their sleeves, tuck in their shirt, or put on a belt. This is the way they are dressing, they like it. You should like it, too. Hey, at least they’re wearing clothes and don’t look like the “not so lucky” examples.
Now that our little disclaimer has been said, I completely agree with you. I would love to see more sports guys dressed like this:
Ashton Kutcher is wearing two looks that sports dads could easily pull off.
Get the Look:
Look #1: Perfect for heading straight from the office to the big game.
Team hat.
Colored button down shirt (maybe in the team’s color), a couple of buttons popped, layered under a grey V-neck sweater.
Fitted jeans (dark blue or black) with black belt.
Clean tennis shoes in good condition.
If he’s into jewelry, Ashton sports a chain necklace which works well with the look.
Look #2: Relaxed and stylish for a weekend at the ballpark.
Team t-shirt or jersey, layered over a contrasting white or colored t-shirt. Roll sleeves and tuck in.
Team hat.
Fitted blue jeans with belt.
Clean tennis shoes in good condition.
Accessorize with a wristwatch.
Good luck, ladies. You’ve got your work cut out for you. If your fairy godmother bails and your man doesn’t magically turn into Ashton Kutcher, try focusing on how good you look standing next to him. Or, move to the other side of the court and pretend not to know him. Oh, and if there are any single dads out there looking to meet a cute, stylish sports mom, we highly recommend the Ashton Look.

Mom, Bethany Warren, recently sent us some photos of an outfit she put together based on our suggestions. We think she did a great job and wanted to share her success with you so that you may be inspired to create a similar look. Bethany’s entire ensemble was less than $90 and consists of versatile pieces that will work with all kinds of outfits. See the cost breakdown below.
Note: For the full-length picture, Bethany couldn’t find her hat, a problem I’m sure many busy moms can relate to. So, we’ve included a close-up shot she took of herself a few weeks earlier. Either way, we think she looks adorable!
Matching hat/scarf combo is Calvin Klein from TJMaxx, $15.
Red plaid shirt is Mossimo Red from Target, $12 clearance.
Blue t-shirt is Gap Outlet, $8.
Jeans are Vigold from TJMaxx, $13.
Boots are Madden Girl from Victoria’s Secret, $39 clearance.
The red bag was passed to her from a girlfriend “who thought my diaper bag could use some style.”
Do you have an inexpensive, cute, functional outfit you’d like to share with other moms? Send us a photo and you just might be featured in our next “Mom to Mom” post.

Mixing neutrals. Yes, you can! Many people shy away from mixing neutrals like grey, black and brown because they feel they either don’t work together or are boring. However, neither is true. As you can see from the above photo, they actually complement each other well. Mom-to-be Jenna Dewan-Tatum sports the perfect mixed-neutrals outfit for running errands or picking the kids up at school. This simple look is built upon basics that will outlast the season and can be worn again and again.
This ensemble is great for moms – allowing for bending over, getting in and out of the car, and hoisting children without the “girls” or the booty hanging out. Not to mention, the look can be recreated with inexpensive items, some of which may already be in your closet.
Here are the details on our version:
Striped t-shirt($16/JC Penney): If you are large-chested, a tee with very narrow stripes will keep you from looking even bigger on top. Here’s another option with a little color, on sale for $12, at Kohl’s.
Skinny jeans(sale $54.90, reg. $78/Levi’s): A mid-range blue wash works very well with this look. Try the jeans already in your closet, or these Levi’s in the Glory Blues wash. Save an extra 25% off at checkout (code EXTRA25).
Knee-high brown boots($42.50 plus $25 dollar discount in online cart/Charlotte Russe): The flat style of this boot makes it perfect for day-long wear. For another option, try these boots from Macy’s, on sale for $51.75 plus extra 10% off (code SAVE), reg. $69.
Accessories ($4.80-$6.80/Forever 21): Chunky chain necklace, sunglasses, and a couple simple bracelets. Shop Forever 21 for inexpensive jewelry. Necklace- $6.80, bracelet- $4.80, and sunglasses- $5.80, style 1 or style 2.

With the new year approaching, we decided to make a resolution of our own. In an effort to let you know where we’re at and what our goals are we came up with a mission statement that reflects what we’ve been doing all along and what we intend to keep doing in the future. We hope you’ll continue to gain insight and learn from our posts and be the hot mom on the outside that you are on the inside.
Wishing all of you a wonderful 2013!
The Mommy Stylist Mission Statement:
The goal of The Mommy Stylist is to help busy moms on a budget find quality, on-trend clothing and put together outfits that make them feel stylish and confident.
Anything we feature must:
-Be functional: A mom needs clothes that will allow her to bend, twist, lift, carry, sit on the ground, get in and out of the car, etc.
-Be fashionable: Being on-trend doesn’t mean having to look like a teenager; it means looking sophisticated and put-together.
-Be inexpensive (but not cheap-looking): Who wants to spend a lot on clothes that are likely to get tears, drool, dirt, etc. on them?
-Be forgiving: Pieces that help camouflage the butt, gut and problem areas in between are what moms need, not skin tight dresses worn by size 2 models. We deal with real people and real bodies – and we make them look good!

With four school-aged kids who are all involved in sports, I find myself wearing team t-shirts often. But I never feel cute in them – maybe because the shirts are always boxy. How can I wear them so I don’t feel so dumpy?
This is an excellent question – one which I’ve struggled with when wearing “team” shirts. One way to pretty them up is to follow Heidi Klum’s lead in the photo above and cut the neckline wide enough so the shirt hangs off one shoulder. I wouldn’t suggest it be as wide as hers is but if it sits just an inch below your shoulder it will look cute without the risk of being trashy.
Or, try going the Sandra Bullock route by wearing a casual long, drapey sweater over it with some jeans and Converse sneakers.
Another idea is to wear a belt with your jeans and only tuck your shirt into the front just in the section over the buckle like this (yes, it’s a photo of a man by hey, he’s doing it right so…). It helps to add some style and keep the shirt from looking too boxy.
Keep the look simple. I would most often pair it with jeans or black leggings. Remember though, if you wear leggings make sure the shirt is long enough to cover your crotch area completely.
For shoes, knee-high riding boots or flat ankle boots would be field-, court- or rink -appropriate and give you some style.
And if you’re going to wear a baseball cap don’t put your hair behind your ears. Let it hang down straight like this. Or, put it in a low ponytail either in the back or a little to the side and then pull the ponytail over your shoulder. A braid done either of those ways would be cute too.

Want to sparkle and shine as much as the twinkling lights surrounding you this holiday season? Try some glittering gold skinny jeans; pair them with a pretty burgundy blouse with stylish back cut-outs, some comfy studded flats, and a cute tailored blazer to keep warm. Accessorize with an edgy braided chain necklace, gold-tone hoop earrings, and a classic watch –perfect for keeping everything moving on schedule. Add a clutch bag, sized perfectly for carrying the essentials while still being small enough to stash out-of-the-way during the festivities. Give your nails a little holiday love, too. Some shimmery nail polish will complete the look perfectly.
After the holidays, a tunic length sweater and tall boots are all you’ll need to work the gold jeans. Wear the burgundy top and some skinny jeans for casual Friday. Layer a black tank-top underneath if wearing a blouse with back cut-out details would be inappropriate for work. If you’re in a daring mood, pair the burgundy top with leopard print pants and the studded flats. Throw on the blazer to add some sophistication. The shoes, clutch, watch and jewelry are all items that can be worn for many occasions, and they’re easy to dress up or down. In fact, all of the items in this outfit are affordable, stylish and re-wearable. What more could you wish for?
By the way, need a great outfit for this year’s holiday photo? Want to be stylish and chic rather than the traditional corny and cheesy? Look no further. You’ve just found it.
Gold Jeans ($25/JC Penny): Cyber Monday Sale $17! We love the high but not-too-high waist on these jeans – it’s perfect for keeping that muffin top at bay.
Watch ($28/Urban Outfitters): If you purchase the watch and clutch at the same time, you can take advantage of Urban Outfitters free shipping policy on orders over $50.

And for an alternate Thanksgiving Day outfit, check out the one we featured last year. Don’t worry, it’s still in style.) Read More
Oxfords and boots and flats – oh my! This seasons shoe trends are all over the map and we love all the options! From lace-ups to equestrian to over-the-knee to ankle-length, there’s a boot for every outfit. The simple ballet flat has evolved into a shoe with real personality. Studs, snakeskin and animal prints abound. Audrey Hepburn would be proud. Don’t be afraid of the wedge sneaker (the wedge is on the inside making “vertically-challenged” women subtly taller) or the oxford. They’re both functional and fashionable and might just pull you out of a wardrobe rut. For the working mom, try a heeled lace-up shoe for a modern vintage look. Next time you reach for your black booties, try these instead. You’ll get compliments all day long.
