Dressing for a field trip requires clothes that can be worn both indoors and out, allow flexibility and comfort in a variety of terrains and situations, and be kid-appropriate (nothing too low cut or too short).
A reader, who is a teacher, recently wrote asking for outfit ideas that fit the above criteria but were still stylish. Since the field trip was going to last a week I put together a Pinterest album with several outfits so she would be able to cover several days. My favorite though, is the one above.
Adapt the outfit to your needs
Obviously, you’re not going to wear pumps on a field trip so try a pair of cute sneakers instead (see some of my recommendations in the shopping section below). And try these other tips to make the outfit work for your needs:
Wear a white tee under the gingham shirt. That way, if you get hot you can remove the gingham shirt and tie it around your waist (one of my favorite functional casual
Be sure to accessorize as it’s one of the easiest ways to add style to an outfit – and in this case, it will be functional as well. Because you’ll have to be checking the time often to stay on schedule, a watch will save you from having to dig through your purse for your cell while trying to wrangle children. And instead of wearing a bracelet or two on the other wrist, try them on the same wrist as the watch for an unexpected touch of layering.
To keep the pants looking modern, roll them up like in the photo. With flats though, don’t roll them higher than just above the ankle bone, especially if you’re short.
Instead of a handheld purse, opt for a cross-body so you’ll be free to hold little hands or help students get onto the bus. It will also keep you from unconsciously setting it down in the midst of all the chaos and leaving it behind.

Hey moms, the kids shouldn’t be the only ones to enjoy back-to-school shopping, you should too! Think about it, now your wardrobe will have to change based on all the things that happen during the school year. From chaperoning the dance to parent/teacher night to cheering the team on during a rainstorm your wardrobe changes even more drastically than the kids’ wardrobes.
A couple of months ago when I wrote, Happiness 101: It’s Easier Than You Think, I had no idea it would touch people the way it did. I received so many wonderful comments about it that it literally brought tears to my eyes. To know I am helping others with The Mommy Stylist is truly a dream come true. I hope today’s article has a similar effect as it is an important piece of the happiness puzzle.
Where does confidence come from?
Confidence is something we all seek. But, unfortunately, many go about it in all the wrong ways, often without even realizing it. Addictions, acting out, gossiping, negativity, insecurity, fishing for compliments – the list goes on and on. When it comes down to it we all just want to feel good about ourselves. However, that will never come from anything external; it can only come from within.
Now that The Mommy Stylist has been around for several years, we’ve decided to start re-posting some of our favorite blogs each Monday so that new readers can benefit from them as well. (And they can serve as reminders for those who have been with us from the beginning.) While some of the items may no longer be available, we wouldn’t post anything that’s out of style, so use them for reference and keep an eye out for something similar when you’re out and about. Enjoy!
In case you’re wondering, the pieces in our outfits are meant to be worn together. You can always just utilize parts of them but beware that if you just buy this purse and wear it with a frumpy dress, the frumpy dress will suck all the fashion life out of it.
I’m so excited for an excuse to relax and have some ME time – thanks TMS! In fact, I’m so excited I can’t get that Jennifer Lopez song out of my head – “Waiting for tonight! Woah!” (music video below, you’re welcome.) Have a good night! I know I will.
Boho and fringe are in the spotlight this fall. Why should moms be excited about this turn of events? Bohemian culture and fashion are about living by your own rules. A thrown together outfit with a few choice “boho” accessories, wild hair and you’re rocking the trend.
Hey Moms! We’re posting this again as a reminder for you to help get your overworked mom friends to take some time for themselves. Our “16 Minutes for Mom Bubbles & Bubbly” date is only three days away. Let’s do this! By Kristin Hull
Are you laughing at that question because pretty much every mom deserves a break (including you)? It’s so true, and sadly, practiced by so few. Well, we’re trying to change that with our 16 Minutes For Mom challenges. Our first, called Bubbles & Bubbly, will have moms soaking in a hot bath under candlelight sipping sparkling wine – and they’ll have to go no further than their own bathroom. We figure if we plan it for a day in the near future, keep the time short, and ask you to nominate your overworked mom friends to accept the challenge, everyone will be more likely to do it.

It’s parent’s weekend at your child’s college; you are so proud and excited that your baby has grown up and is pursuing his or her dreams at Big Name University. Showing support through your wardrobe is a given but how to do it without going overboard? You definitely don’t want to be the embarrassing cheerleader parent – decked out head to toe in school logos. (And please, just say no to mother/child matching hoodies.) Looking stylish and sophisticated but not overdressed is the goal. So, what should you wear?

It’s Friday. I woke up late. I’m tired from a long week. My cat threw up. And I had to be out of the door in no time. As I threw together my outfit for the day I thought about how boring it would be without accessories, which are often THE key to making an otherwise dull outfit stylish. I also thought about how this would be an easy outfit for a mom to put together. You probably already have most of the pieces in your closet. I’m going to dissect the ensemble so you too can throw it on the next time you have a busy morning (which I’m sure, because you’re a mom, will be tomorrow). Let’s go from top to bottom:
Cool weather approaches and the fashion gods have spoken; capes are in this year. Although we’ll readily admit that a woman with a cape looks confident and chic, the idea of pulling one off ourselves can be daunting. “How do they make it look so cool?” we wonder as we stare into the fitting room mirror. “This looks so boxy, baggy, oversized, pompous, random, etc.”
Fear not, far from befitting only the opera house and people “cool” enough to be immune to normal laws of fashion, capes today come in a variety of accessible styles perfect for your look (tom-boy, boho, girly, classic, etc.) Below are some fashionable, mom-friendly outfit inspirations featuring capes. Get inspired, dress your best and feel confident wearing this season’s hottest trends, we’ll show you how.

Altogether, this outfit would cost around $270 but for nine items that’s really not bad. And if you consider that each piece is incredibly versatile and can be paired with a number of things that are already in your closet, you’ll realize it’s a great a deal. Wear them all at once and you’ll be that mom – the one all the other moms envy. The one that makes them wonder how a busy mom is able to look so put together. However, if you can’t squeeze that much out of your budget then just get a couple of key pieces. The scarf and the hat will provide the most fashion bang for the buck as they can both be worn over and over with various outfits. The hat will keep you looking good despite drizzling rain or humidity (plus, you won’t have to do your hair when you wear it!) and the scarf will add a pop of color which always looks stylish.
Back to school is a joyous and tumultuous time for moms. Take a moment to enjoy it. (Click image for source.)
As the long days of summer come to an end and children are shipped off to school each morning, moms everywhere rejoice in their new found freedom. Mundane things, like running errands in lightning-fast time or taking a ten minute shower without toddler commentary, are suddenly cause for touchdown-esque dancing.
Feel familiar? No worries. Below we share some video tutorials showcasing easy, mom-possible hairstyles.
As a woman and mother, hair can be the biggest of beauty challenges. It can literally be a pain; for example, when your infant is innocently tearing it out of your head? Or, a nightmare when you haven’t had a chance to wash it in three days – forget styling it. Sometimes, even if you have a past filled with perfectly coiffed hair, pulling off a polished ten-minute “do” seems impossible.
Who: Sabrina, mom of twins, a girl and a boy, age 5
Where we spotted her: At her company picnic
Why we love her outfit: Not only is it cute on it’s own, but perfectly appropriate for the occasion. The company picnic outfit is a tough one. You want to look professional but not like you can’t relax once in a while. However, location and weather must also be taken into consideration. If it’s sunny, will there be shade somewhere or do I need to wear a hat? How hot will it be? Boob sweat and business do not mix well. For her situation, Sabrina hit a home run.
A mom’s warm weather schedule can be overwhelming . . . and fun. With so many enticing extracurricular activities to keep you busy, sometimes there just isn’t time (or an available phone booth) for a wardrobe change between school, the pool, errands and the big soccer match. Short of showing up at your child’s sports event in your bikini, prepare ahead of time with a versatile cover-up, attractive sandals, and a few choice accessories.
The cover-up above stands on its own and can be utilized often, stretching that budget. T-shirt dresses are casual, cool and easy to pull-on quickly. (Same goes for the casual shift dress.) Dress it down with sneakers; up with heels; wear it to the beach with cute sandals; add a touch of tomboy charm with a pair of combat boots. For even more outfit ideas, see the Outfits: T-Shirt Dress board on The Mommy StylistPinterest page.
I’ve been running around in the sexy pineapple number below, available from ModCloth. The high waistline covers my worry zone (C-section tummy), the print is fresh and unexpected, and the cut of the top is stylishly sexy. I feel strong and confident in this bikini, and the compliments from other women – teenagers, other moms, even the occasional grandmother – only help.
Now, pull the outfit together. Accessorize to take this t-shirt dress from cover-up to wearable fashion. The accessories shown can be worn together with almost any summer or fall outfit. Boater hats, square sunnies, layered necklaces, midi and regular rings, and fringed bags all echo Boho style – the epitome of casual cool. Add a mod shoe and a touch of lip color and you’re all set for quick transitions from school to swim class to hockey practice and back again.

When I wrote Happiness 101: It’s Easier Than You Think a while back I mentioned that one of the books that completely turned my life around was What Happy People Know. It helped me, in simple terms, to see that to be happy all that’s necessary is to focus on what you DO have at not on what you don’t. In doing that you’ll realize you j a lot more than you think. You have so much, in fact, that the good far exceeds the bad. Suddenly, life isn’t looking so bad. It’s actually looking pretty darn good. And it’s all under your control.m
If you find the topic of happiness as intriguing (and hopefully life-changing) as I do, you’ll want to get your hands on this book. And to help out we’re going to give one lucky winner a copy. All you need to do to enter is send us the email addresses of two friends you think might like The Mommy Stylist. We PROMISE to email them only once to introduce ourselves, and if they don’t want to hear from us again their info will be immediately deleted from our files (but you’ll still be entered into the giveaway). Because our goal is to help as many moms as possible feel good about, and take care of themselves, we want to spread the word as much as we can.
Are you in? If so, email us at themommystylist@mommystylistblog.com, put HAPPINESS GIVEAWAY in the subject line, and include the email addresses of two friends in the body. You’ll automatically be entered to win a copy of this inspiring book.
Contest ends at 11:59pm PST on Thursday, August 13. Winner will be notified via email within 48 hours. (See the “fine print” below.)
Good Luck!

The Charming Charlie Neckline Cheat Sheet offers visual inspiration for pairing a necklace with every neckline.
Accessorizing is an affordable way to complete an outfit and freshen a wardrobe full of time-honored classics, while remaining trendy. Costume necklaces are available for a steal from our favorite stores- Kohl’s, Target, Forever 21 . . . you name it. The “I can’t wear necklaces because I can never find one I like in my budget” excuse doesn’t fly. So, why aren’t more moms taking advantage of this quick and easy way to accessorize?
We asked around and it seems that a lot of women just aren’t sure which necklaces and necklines work together. There are so many styles available, but which to chose? Charming Charlie answers this question with “The Neckline Cheatsheet” above. And we explain below:
1. The Ballet Neck
Pair ballet shirts with necklaces that mimick the neckline.
2. The Crew Neck
Draw attention away from this harsh cut, and towards a shapely neck and face, by adding a collar or Peter Pan-style necklace.
3. The Button Down
Always run the necklace strands under the collar, never inside. Choose a statement necklace to add style to your ensemble. For the office, a statement necklace is the equivalent of the power tie.
4. The Scoop Neck
Create a layered look with a necklace following the curve of the scoop neck shirt.
5. The Strapless
A large draped, layered, or intricate necklace adds interest to this otherwise simple neckline.
6. The Boatneck
Compliment the width of the boatneck with a lengthy necklace.
7. The Cowl Neck
Yes, you can accessorize a cowl! Choose a medallion or charm on a short chain.
8. The Turtle Neck
Turtle necks cry for sparkle. Complete this outfit with any style necklace. A turtle neck is a “blank canvas.”
9. The V-Neck
Keep your necklace inside the V of the V-neck. Fill the space with a flashy statement necklace or keep it simple.

Purchasing a bathing suit is a stressful event for moms. Whether you’re hoping to hide “mommy tummy,” c-section scars or a bit of extra weight in the thighs, swimsuits leave little to the imagination. Settling for an unflattering option as a means to cut costs is a bad road that many moms go down. If the true cost of a subpar suit is loss of confidence and feeling uncomfortable all summer, then the price is too high.
When I was young, my mother chose the “affordable” swimsuit option. After witnessing that mistake, I will never make the same one myself. Always in impeccable shape, she never had to worry about finding a forgiving bathing suit, but she needed a little help in the quality category. Unfortunately, cheap suits are also made of cheap material. I remember a red one-piece. She looked like a Baywatch girl in it, and the first couple weeks it was fabulous. Then, it started fading in the sun. Sitting in the community baby pool wore the fabric thinner and thinner until the day she stood up and her friend quickly ran over to wrap her (and her full moon) in a towel.
Fortunately, quality swimsuits can stand a lot of wear making them splurge-worthy. Look for options with shaping panels, ruching, or high-waists. These style details will help camouflage problem areas. Don’t feel forced to stick with solids either. Yes, black is always slimming and flattering, but a good pattern can also go a long way in distracting the eye from a fluffy tummy. Color blocking styles can create a trompe l’oeil effect and the illusion of a slimmer figure. Now that you’re excited about shopping, where should you start?

As you may have seen in my recent post, “Mom’s Spring Shopping List” full skirts are a big trend for the spring and summer (and will most likely trickle into fall as well). And what a blessing as they cover the pooch, the butt and the thighs! Heaven sent, right?
But, as a mom, how can you wear them so they are functional and don’t look like you’re trying too hard? Well, we’ve scoured the magazines and internet to bring you a Pinterest album full of ideas. (And we’ll continue to add more as we find them so check back regularly.)
As you’ll see, one of the best things about the full skirt trend right now is that all lengths, from minis to maxis, are a go. As long as your skirt isn’t too short, you’ll be able to make all your mom moves quickly and easily. Bend, twist, sit and chase little ones without fear of showing too much or taking a fall. Full skirts are super-versatilie too; they can all be worn in a casual setting or a dressier one. Just a quick change of shoes from flats to heels and you’re ready for a night out or a party.
So, let’s get started! Click here for some mom-worthy outfit ideas featuring full skirts.
This year’s birthday list is mostly a practical one. There are things I need that I have neglected to purchase because well, I either didn’t want to spend the money, couldn’t find what I really wanted or just never got around to it. So what better time than a birthday to jump in and go for it? Let’s check it out piece by piece.
The Home. T ($32): I have been looking for some t-shirts to wear with my pencil skirt. I love the juxtaposition of a casual tee with a skirt and heels. I first saw this tee with the state of California on it but when I went to the website I found they had one for every state (and many countries); I had to commemorate my childhood growing up surrounded by the Great Lakes. And we love that the company donates a portion of all proceeds to multiple sclerosis research.
Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment ($22.50 – free shipping both ways!): If I could fall in love with a lip balm, it would be this one. At $22.50 it’s quite a splurge but due to its staying power you won’t have to re-apply it often so the tube lasts quite a long time. It’s so smooth and creamy and gives a pretty, subtle tint to your lips. There are several different shades to choose from so it should be easy to find one that works with your skin tone.
Aviator Sunglasses ($98 – free shipping!): I like over-the-top fashion-y sunglasses as much as the next guy but now that I live in southern California I need a good quality pair that will not only protect my eyes from the elements but also work with any ensemble from workout clothes to a business suit. And no style does that better than the classic aviator. My biggest problem though is that most are too big for me and some of the shapes don’t work with my face – but not these! They’re perfect!
Plaid Shirt ($6.99-$12.99): As I mentioned in my “How to Look Cool in the Heat” post, wearing a shirt around your waist can solve several problems: 1) It can help keep you “feeling” covered up even in the hottest weather. Sometimes when it’s insanely hot and I am wearing shorts and a tank top I feel a bit overexposed. Just adding a shirt around my waist makes me feel a bit more refined. 2) It can add pattern and color to an otherwise blah outfit. 3) When the evening chill hits or the air conditioning is cranked in the grocery store, no need to run to the car for a jacket; there’s a perfect cover-up around your waist. I’ve been looking for a pink and black pattern forever – and I finally found it!
Champagne Tank Top ($30): I love champagne and I love anything French. So could there be a better shirt for me? Probably not. Again, I can wear this with a skirt and heels or on a Saturday with jeans and sneakers.
White Leather Skirt ($172 – free shipping both ways!): This gorgeous leather skirt is definitely not a necessity but I want it nonetheless. It’s modern, it’s sexy, it’s versatile. Yes, it’s also a light color which is always a danger but because it is leather it will clean easier than cloth will. (At least that’s what I’m telling myself.)
Skater Shoe ($84 – free shipping both ways): I have had my current black patent skater shoes for about seven years, so you can imagine the shape they are in. Crazy enough, I still get compliments on them. I was hesitant to give them up until I found this pair. The metal details give them a little edge and they’ll be just as cute and versatile as my old ones.
Colorful Midi Skirt ($8 – free shipping over $50): Yep, you read that price right. It’s on sale (normally $25). So if you think I haven’t already “clicked to purchase,” you’re crazy. I love the colors. I love the soft, flowy material. I love the length. And an elastic waistband is nothing less than heavenly.
Black Purse ($127 – free shipping both ways!): I have been looking for a black everyday purse for a while now. But, like my aviators, I wanted one that I could carry whether I was in work clothes or play clothes. Because this comes with a long strap as well as the short handles I think it will be perfect. The long strap turns it into a cross-body bag for more casual days.
Denim Jacket ($47.25): I have searched and searched and searched for just the right denim jacket and this may be it! The fitted waist will flatter my hourglass shape and I like that the style is unique.
If my taste doesn’t exactly match yours, check out some alternate styles below!

Along with summer weddings come travel, parties, showers, receptions, and the ever dreaded dress code. During all other seasons, wedding attire is straightforward: a formal dress, heels, a classic bag, a red lip and light eye makeup. In the summer, however, the warm weather throws the rule book out the window. With some guests in sun dresses and flip flops and others in the formal dresses suitable for a winter wedding, what should you wear?
Dress For The Occasion
A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to dress for just such an occasion – my sister’s wedding. (Congratulations Jessica and Stephen!) With a formal church ceremony followed by an evening reception filled with country music and cowboy boots, I knew there would be a mix of attire. Some would dress formally due to the church setting while others would don something that would allow them to kick up their heels (and stay cool) in the rustic setting of the reception. As sister to the bride, I needed to look well-dressed for both environments.
Above is a re-creation of the outfit I wore to the reception (I was a bridesmaid), but it would work equally well for the big day. Opting for a simple dress with clean lines allows the wearer to dress up or down for any affair. Grey is less ceremonial than black, chic without being stiff. A brown belt, shoes and clutch lessen the formality of the outfit. The open sandal wedges add a touch of summery fun while maintaining the poise provided by heels (mine had a higher cork wedge, with an otherwise similar design). Add a statement necklace, a simple bangle and earrings in a gold-tone to complement warm red lips.
The Finishing Touch
Recently, a company called Ruby Ribbon sent us some shapewear samples and I knew that my sister’s wedding would be the perfect time to try them out. Their Classic Cami and High Waist Thigh Slimmer were the first items in my suitcase. Together, they created the ultimate cat suit, one that was comfortable, slimming, and much easier to escape, should the need for the restroom arise, than the traditional one-piece (as my fellow bridesmaids can attest to).
One of my favorite things about these shaping essentials is the silicone gripper that kept the cami and slimmers from rising up (gripper must be positioned against bare skin, not fabric). Even better, they are machine wash and dryable, which makes them mom-friendly. Most shapewear is hand wash only (a.k.a. wear once and never have the time to hand wash so eventually toss out and purchase another). Skeptical that they wouldn’t survive the spin cycle, I ran them through a few times and was pleased to discover that both items held their shapes perfectly.
Grey pencil dresses come at every price point and in many brands. Find the one that flatters your body shape the most. This dress is a wear-it-again staple. Wear it to: work, date night, PTA meeting, parent-teacher conference, church, baby shower, graduation, office party.
Step into this cami like stepping into a bathing suit. It does an excellent job at lifting and separating, so provided the climate is warm, there is very little need to wear a bra underneath. Use this chart to find the correct size for you.
The plain neckline of this dress is screaming for a statement necklace. The design of this necklace, reminiscent of coral reefs, is dressy enough for the occasion and adds a touch of whimsy.
A simple gold (like this one) or gold-tone bangle is classy and elegant. It is a great way to decorate your wrist without drawing attention away from your statement pieces (necklace and lip color).
The cork is a bit unexpected, yet still neutral and weather appropriate. The clean lines mean that you’ll be able to carry this bag again, and with any color palate.
Find a brown sandal wedge like this one, or maybe one with a higher cork wedge, for comfortable feet through dancing, mingling, and heat. Opting for a sandal over a pump gives this look a more relaxed and summery feel.

As a busy mom, we understand that going to the mall and shopping for yourself is probably a faint memory. And that’s ok because you’re focusing on raising your children, but it is often at the expense of your wardrobe. I know, you’re thinking how unimportant your clothing is in the big picture. And that’s true – to a point. What we wear often affects how we feel about ourselves. That’s not saying it’s about wearing designer pieces or looking perfect – those things are often about how we want others to view us. But dressing for confidence is about how you want to view yourself – and that IS important. Let’s face it, none of us feel good when we know we’re walking around in an old, stretched-out, stained duds. (Speaking of confidence, check out our Happiness 102: Confidence post here.)
That’s why The Mommy Stylist is here
Yep, that’s why we do what we do. It’s in our mission statement. We strive to make it easy for you to shop, mostly online, so that you can spend your time doing all the selfless things a mom does. So, that said, we thought we’d share all the online shopping tips we’ve learned in order to make the experience that much better for you. Let’s get to it.
Tips and tricks to make you an expert online shopper
Check the site’s shipping charges. You don’t want to spend time picking out a bunch of items only to realize at the end that the shipping price just isn’t worth it. (And in case you haven’t noticed, we always try to let you know when a store we use has free shipping and free returns – just to save you time.)
Check the site’s return policy. Free returns are far and few between but boy do we love the stores that offer it like Nordstrom, Zara, and Asos.
Always check the size chart and keep a measuring tape on hand. Scoop up a measuring tape next time you’re at Target. That way you’ll have it when you need it. We all know sizing varies, even between pieces from the same company. So, be sure to check the chart for every item you want to buy.
Enlarge photos. Always enlarge the photo of a potential purchase as much a possible to assess fabric quality and see any details (that you may or may not like) that weren’t visible in the small photo. If you’re considering buying something that is dark, check to see if it is available in a lighter color and then enlarge it. Details are much easier to see in lighter colors. There have been many times I have almost bought something black but when I enlarged a lighter shade of it I saw that it looked cheap or too see-through.

Inspired by our New Year’s Fashion Resolutions, we decided to do a quick “dress thinner” tutorial. Contrary to what you may think, a wardrobe overhaul isn’t necessarily required to improve your look. By simply defining your waistline you can easily create a slimmer physique. It won’t take designer duds or a major spending spree; simply take a look at your current clothing with new eyes. Creating a waistline is easy and it will have a lasting effect on how you feel about yourself.
How can you define your waistline with an already existing outfit? Try some of these solutions:
A structured blazer buttoned at the waist will hug curves.
Belt it! Adding a belt at your waistline will draw the eye in and make you appear thinner.
Create some contrast. A white t-shirt tucked casually into black jeans is always flattering. The visual contrast between the black waistband and white T-shirt draws the eye to your waist.
Try a trompe l’oeil, which means to “deceive the eye.” Emphasize the bust and hips to make the waist look smaller. A ruffly top and an A-line skirt will do the trick.

Is it me, or is white lace cropping up everywhere? If your children are older and there’s less risk of little fingerprint stains, run with it. White lace comes back time and again and can be season-proofed by adding layers. If your kids are young, trying taking this trend in a different direction – accessorizing. Don’t underestimate the power of it. Accessorizing is an affordable way too keep up with current trends that won’t make you fear dirt from tiny shoes or spaghetti-splatter hugs.

Pictured above is the second look for 2015 TMS styling session winner, Allyn Wise. Allyn loves full skirts, a perfect blend between tomboy and feminine style, and tends toward a (business) casual look. Her biggest challenge is finding outfits for work that can blend into her everyday wardrobe. Look two is a tough-girl chic ensemble, which can not only transition to the weekend with the addition of Allyn’s favorite brand, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, but also be paired with each item in last week’s outfit.
Midi-length full skirt ($20.99 & free shipping/Amazon): Allyn chose a flattering skirt style to fall in love with. High-waisted midi skirts emphasize the smallest part of her hourglass shaped figure, the fullness of the skirt skims over any “mommy tummy,” and the hem ends at the most shapely part of the leg – hiding the thighs while still showing a sexy bit of skin. This shade of blue will hide dirt, a life saver for moms. It’s professional enough for the office yet casual enough for brunch or a PTA meeting. Try pairing with the chambray button-down from look #1. Just tuck the shirt in and add a wide brown belt or tie over the outfit.
Striped V-neck Tee ($38.00/Pinup Girl Clothing): Pinup Girl Clothing offers clothing suited to full-figured and hourglass-shaped women. Roushing updates this otherwise classic ¾ sleeve v-neck tee. It keeps the fabric from gaping open when bending over to pick up the little ones or fetch copies off the office printer.
Cami ($15.90/Forever21): For more coverage at the office, layer the striped top over a unique cami like these. The cut mimics the statement necklaces scattered over Allyn’s style board, and any of the three colors available will pair well with this outfit. Yes, it’s a cropped style but underneath the v-neck no one will know.
Camel moto jacket ($34.99/Amazon): A moto jacket gives an edgy vibe to an otherwise feminine silhouette. Look for one with enough embellishment to really follow the moto jacket style but basic enough to be versatile and not go out of style. I have a similar jacket, which I’ve been wearing since (gasp!) junior high. It pairs well with a ribbed tank and flirty floral skirt, or over a lace top to tone down the girliness. Customer reviews say this jacket looks expensive and is an excellent steal; it runs small so order 1-2 sizes up.
NYX Perfect Red matt lipstick ($5.99/Target): A bold classic red lip exudes confidence. Long-lasting, paraben-free lipstick is perfect for moms. Saving time on re-application is an added bonus.
“Good Vibes” cuff ($5.90/Forever 21): Allyn recently completed a full marathon, an accomplishment she is extremely proud of. This cuff can be a reminder to continue pursuing dreams that make her feel proud of and happy with herself.
Glasses ($5.90/Forever21): The shape of these sunglasses complement Allyn’s face and the wood-like finish is unexpectedly cool.
Edgy wedge ($36.97/Amazon): Perhaps as an alternative to the moto jacket (swap for the blazer in the first look or go jacketless), add a touch of biker style with these edgy wedges. Also available in camel, the same color as the moto jacket.
Leopard sneaker ($22.87/Amazon): Allyn also has a weakness for animal prints, making these leopard sneakers the perfect finishing touch. Of course, the white sneaks from look #1 also pair perfectly.

A few weeks ago we posted that Allyn Wise had won our styling giveaway and she told us about her life and fashion needs. Then, we had her create a lookbook on Pinterest in order to get an idea of her style preferences. And today, I have designed an outfit for her comprised of pieces that can all be worn together, in different combinations, and separately.
Allyn told us her biggest fashion challenge is putting together outfits for work and what we noticed from her lookbook was that her office outfit preferences were quite different from her casual ones. We thought perhaps if she could start purchasing pieces that would work for both it would increase her wardrobe options as well as make it easier to put an outfit together on a daily basis.
Keeping all of that in mind, as well as her ever present mom needs, I found several pieces that may just fit her aesthetic as well as her lifestyle. I set them up as a work outfit since that is where she has the most trouble but every piece can easily be paired with something as casual as a pair of ripped jeans.
Let’s take a look at each piece individually.
Houndstooth Skirt ($19.33/Sheinside – free shipping and exchanges, easy returns): Since moms have to sit on a variety of surfaces (depending on which role they’re playing at the time) I chose a skirt that has a lot of black in it to help hide dirt but still took Allyn’s fondness for black and white and striped garments into consideration. The pleats give it some shape and conceal the tummy while the higher waist prevents muffin top. Plus, houndstooth is a big trend for spring! (Note: this skirt comes from a company called Sheinside, one of several Asian companies selling adorable clothing at very low prices. I was leery to feature them on TMS until I watched several YouTube videos by bloggers who have purchased from them. They all said the quality was quite good especially for the low prices and that while yes, it does take a few weeks to receive a shipment, it was worth the wait. There are also customer reviews which are extremely helpful. Sizes can vary from one item to the next so be sure to look at the size reference on each item’s page and check the reviews as they often include valuable fit information.)
Denim Shirt ($59.95/The Gap): Every mom should own a denim shirt. They look chic no matter where you are or what you’re doing. They’re easily washable and they hide dirt. Wear one by itself with the houndstooth skirt or layer it over a pretty colored tank with the first several buttons open. (Check out our “How to Wear Denim Shirts” article here.) Watch Jenna Lyons, President of J. Crew, show us how to roll up shirt sleeves the cool J. Crew way (forward to the :59 mark).
V-neck Sweater ($22.99/Target): Pair a sweater in a pretty color with the skirt – try it tucked in or with a partial tuck like the photo in this post. Or try it over the denim shirt with cuffs folded up and the bottom hanging out like in the photo below.
Click photo for source.
Blazer ($29.90/Forever 21): A blazer gives any outfit instant sophistication. Layer it over a graphic tee, a colorful tank, or the denim shirt and/or sweater.

Although we aren’t all gifted with the talent and time to recycle our used newspapers into clothing, we can make EcoFriendly fashion choices, reducing our global footprint. Source: Amy M. Phillips and Fairlight Hubbard
With the weather warming up, everyone’s mind is on the awakening earth, enjoying time in nature and on preserving that joy for our children. Riding bikes to the grocery store; opening the windows to let sunlight and cool breezes into our homes; swapping out fluorescent for LED bulbs; and recycling are all doable ways to reduce environmental impact. Did you know that you can make a difference with your wardrobe as well?
Natural Fiber And Dye Options
Choosing clothing made from 100% organic natural fibers is one option for greening up your closet. Less pesticide and chemical processing, fewer health impacts on factory workers and steady renewability are all key benefits of these fabrics.
Some good options are:
Wool: Wool is renewable, fire-resistant and doesn’t need chemical inputs. Look for chlorine-free wool from humanely-treated animals. Organic wool is increasingly becoming available; it is produced using sustainable farming practices and without toxic sheep dips. Source.
Hemp: Hemp is rapidly renewable, requires little or no pesticides, grows without fertilizer, requires minimum attention, doesn’t deplete soil nutrients and is easy to harvest.
Organic Cotton: More than 25 percent of the world’s pesticides are used in conventional cotton production. Organic cotton is grown without toxic, synthetic chemical inputs. Look for natural dyes or colored cotton to further reduce the amount of chemicals dumped into our ecosystem.
Don’t stop at natural fibers; look for natural dyes as well. So many organic dyes can be found in your local grocery store or farmers market – onion skins (yellow/orange), coffee/tea (brown), roses (pink), artichokes (green), etc (source). No chemicals mean less toxicity and healthier lives.
Another natural dye, which I love lately, is plant-based indigo (blue jean) blue. Shibori, a Japanese tie-dying technique in which fabric is tied, stitched or folded to create different patterns as a result of the dying process, is a popular way to use indigo dyes. Picture a shibori indigo dyed cotton summer dress as a swimsuit cover-up this summer – chic.
The Trifecta
Reduce, reuse and recycle – this tried and true mantra applies to clothing as well as reducing waste.
Reduce your clothing consumption: Build your wardrobe from the foundation up. A strong foundation is filled with basics – classic, fitted, high-quality pieces that will last a lifetime. Next, add in items that you will want to continue wearing even if they go out of “fashion.” Keep your purchases to a minimum. So many people have closets full of clothing they’ve worn once or may even still have tags on them – don’t be one of those people.
To kick start your wardrobe transformation, try a 30×30 clothing challenge. Pick 30 pieces from your wardrobe; those are the only items you can wear this month. Good Luck!.
Reuse old clothing for new purposes: Turn an old T-shirt into a quilt or grocery bag. Trim long jeans into cut-offs for the summer.
Even better, fix it and wear your favorite jacket or top for a few more years. Not down with the sewing machine? Enlist the help of a tailor or chase down the Patagonia #WornWear tour.
VIDEO
Recycle your used clothes: Denim, wool, cotton and polyester can all be recycled into material for new clothing, insulation, cleaning rags, etc. Re-sell it at garage sales, on craigslist, or at a resale shop, then put that cash toward a “new” gently used staple for your wardrobe. Another way to recycle your used clothing – donate it! Goodwill, Salvation Army, the local Humane Society or homeless shelters are all happy to take used clothing donations.
Eco-Friendly Fashion Choices
The most eco-friendly option is to continue wearing the clothing you already own as long as it is flattering and in good condition. Next, purchase clothes that you can wear for a long time like classic silhouettes or pieces that make you happy enough to wear them even if they aren’t “in” anymore, like items that look good on you, make you feel confident, and are likely to outlast the season. Finally, purchase low impact clothes made from natural or recycled fibers, natural, non-toxic dyes, ethically produced, and locally sourced.

When it comes to fashion, Allyn Wise (this year’s styling session winner) navigates two very different worlds. We asked her to create a style board in order to get a feel for what kinds of outfits interest her. What we found is that she is drawn to two distinct aesthetics.
On the few days she heads into the office for work or more formal occasions, Allyn steers toward structured, feminine attire consisting of classic button-downs and full skirts, a modern take on Dior’s New Look. When working from home or spending time with her family, she relies on more casual combos like jeans and sweaters layered with a relaxed blazer or blanket wrap.
Allyn’s fashion hardship may stem not from the lack of budding outfit ideas when it comes time to head into the office as previously supposed, but rather from the idea that her work and casual wardrobe preferences are so different from one another. Perhaps there is a way to create a happy marriage between these two seemingly opposing styles, resulting in a unified wardrobe that will allow for many more outfit options.
With this goal in mind, The Mommy Stylist Editor-in-Chief, Kristin Hull, and I will each create a unique outfit based upon Allyn’s fashion preferences and lifestyle. We’ll post our looks in the coming weeks so stay tuned to see what we come up with; it may just provide some inspiration for you too!

March is a busy month in our household, filled with celebrations and happiness. Our wedding anniversary, my birthday, Ostara and signs of spring all crowd in.
I have been asked to make a birthday wish list. Of course for a mom, that’s easy- a clean house, no fighting for a day, my family to generously volunteer to babysit the girls while the husband and I go on a much anticipated date (**hint, hint**), etc. Reconciling treating yourself to material items with a tight budget and a house full of “kid stuff” can seem overwhelming. But, birthdays and good excuses come seldom enough without creating more reasons not to indulge.
After much consideration, may I present one mom’s birthday list.

Congratulations to Allyn Wise for winning our styling giveaway! Allyn is mom to two boys, five and seven years old. She currently works part-time from home as an Executive Assistant but goes to the office a few times a month. We recently chatted about her fashion and style in order to get a feel for what will work best when we create her outfits in the coming weeks.
The Mommy Stylist: What activities does an everyday outfit have to function for?
Allyn: On the days that I do go to the office (which are the most challenging) it’s typical for me to head straight from there to pre-school pick-up and then to the grocery store or to run a quick errand. On the days I work from home, I am at my desk until pre-school pick up and then, like on office days, I’ll get few errands done. Sometimes, I have PTA meetings or lunch with friends during the day while the kids are in school.
TMS: What clothing stores do you purchase from most often (online or in person)?
Allyn: Nordstrom is my favorite and I used their personal shopping service for several years. In an effort to cut expenses, I have stopped using it because I liked everything they would bring me and it would be really hard to not get everything. However, I realize now how horribly inefficient I am at shopping for myself. I will spend an hour gathering things to try on and then 30 minutes trying on and maybe, if I’m lucky, buy one item. Not a good use of my time. Also I have used Amazon for the basics in the past.
TMS: What is your biggest fashion problem?
Allyn: Muffin top. I have even started taking in my waistbands just a little on each side which does seem to help. I like Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, but when my top is more form fitting, I don’t like how high the waistband seems to be, a little too 80s for me.
TMS: What item(s) can’t you leave the house without?
Allyn: Lipstick, mascara and earrings are the three essentials I never leave home without.
TMS: What is your favorite article of clothing in your closet right now?
TMS: Are there any current trends that you love/hate?
Allyn: I absolutely hate the tribal leggings trend. I have yet to see anyone that I like them on – and that applies to all body types. A woman can have a rockin’ body but if she’s wearing those it’s over for me.
TMS: What do you like most about The Mommy Stylist?
Allyn: I love the outfit ideas and links to where to buy them. I like that you consider whether an item looks cheap when it is priced cheaply. I love a bargain, but not if it looks bad. I like your advice on how to dress for your body type. Also, I like that what you have started doing with the Happiness and Confidence posts.
TMS: Is there anything else you’d like to let us know about you that we didn’t ask?
Allyn: An accomplishment that I am proud off outside of my family is that I completed a full marathon for my 40th birthday. Prior to having my boys, I never even thought about running a marathon so to want to, and actually complete one, was amazing.

As our loyal readers know, we here at The Mommy Stylist are big proponents of scarves. They’re inexpensive and versatile, and will amp up almost any outfit. And when old man winter rears his ugly head, or when the air conditioning at the office is going full force, they’ll help keep you warm. But did you know there are dozens of ways to wear them? Read More
The day for lovers has arrived; take some time off from being just mom. Today, embrace the roles of wife and lover as well. True, you may have the kids in tow during the day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress up, spend time together, and (after packing the kids off to sleep) have a low-key, low-cost, sexy date with your man.
Looking for the ideal outfit for your special night? The outfit above meets all the requirements. It’s budget friendly, practical, flattering, flirty, and perfect for Valentine’s Day. First, dig through your closet for the basic building blocks: black tights, skinny belt, and knee-high boots. Next, focus on the statement pieces: (faux) leather jacket and heart printed dress. Accessorize with a cute bag, cocktail ring, and long chain necklace.
Remember to pull out that lingerie you’ve been saving for a day when you feel “sexy enough to wear it.” It’s here. All dressed up just for him. How could he resist you? (He can’t, of course, hence the aforementioned children in tow.) Since you put so much thought into your outfit today, he’ll spend all day wondering just what you’re wearing underneath. Go get him!
Low-Key, Low-Cost Date Ideas
If you’re not in the mood for the impersonal chocolates and roses this year, and the budget doesn’t allow for a diamond tennis bracelet, fear not! We have some cute date ideas that will fit the bill and make your day special.
Go on a bike ride, bring a take-out picnic and wine.
Build a fort, stock with snacks and wine, look at old photos from dating and reminisce.
Take a bath together.
Have a living room dance party.
Head to little Osaka for a private karaoke room.
Wear it Again
The basics (black tights, skinny belt, and knee-high boots) can be worn time and again. If you don’t already have them in your wardrobe, consider investing.
The black and white heart print dress is grown-up enough to work into your look more than just one day a year. Add it to a casual work wardrobe; wear it to brunch with family or friends; to the museum; or out for coffee. The style, despite the unsightly elastic waist (cleverly covered up with the belt) is flattering. It will skim over the tummy and end at the thinnest part of the upper leg. The gathered neckline will be flattering on many bust sizes.
The leather jacket can be worn casually or to the office. Wear it with flouncy or lacy, t-shirt, or fancy dresses. Try it with jeans or leggings. A good (faux) leather jacket can almost function as a basic.
Fun, low-cost accessories are a great way to add style to a look without breaking the bank.

Red faux leather jacket ($49.99/Amazon) Draw the eye and give a nod to the color of love with this red leather jacket.
Heart-print dress ($29.99/Mango) This grown-up graphic heart-print dress is flattering and flirty. The material will skim over problem areas and flatter many bust sizes. Just be sure to disguise the cheesy elastic waistband with a belt.
Layered tassel necklace ($10.90/Forever21) Cheap, but not cheap-looking, this necklace can be worn again with jeans, a basic tee and a blazer.
Cocktail ring ($4.80/Forever21) Add a touch of glam with this classic style cocktail ring.
Black skinny belt ($29.95/Amazon) If not already in your closet, a black skinny belt is worth investing in. It can add definition to your figure, often making you look thinner.
Tights ($12.37/Amazon) If you’re lucky enough to live in a warm weather climate, then these are optional. If not, throw on a pair of tights to keep the goose-bumps at bay.
Quilted clutch ($9.95/H&M) Finish off your sexy ensemble with a cool clutch.
Knee-high boots ($44.90/Forever21) Black knee-high boots should always be in your wardrobe. They make your legs look longer, work with many outfits, and will create a put-together look instantly. This wedge will be easy to move around in while providing more sex appeal than a flat.

As I flip through my bookmarked style blogs wondering what to write about this week, I realize the answer is scrolling before my eyes. Why not acquaint you with some of the stylish women I turn to for outfit and article inspiration?
My arsenal of fashionistas is organized into three collections: “Everymom;” “Supermom;” and “Specialized.” Allow me to introduce one icon from each category as part of this series.
Megan of Chasing Davies showcases effortless style. She is always perfectly put-together in outfits that suit the mommy lifestyle. (Of course, she is the mom of two young kids and that could have something to do with it.) She looks comfortable and classy as she chases her children around in staple pieces that inhabit plenty of wardrobes. Her articles are upbeat and relatable. (“I love fashion and exerting my creativity through styling, but I’m also a mom, have a full-time job and live on a budget.”) Turn to Megan for real-life outfit ideas that “every mom” can pull off.
I read Johnnybell’s, of NY Trendy Moms, articles and am stunned. How does she do it all? Between meetings, bi-lingual blogging, promoting, travelling, supporting her young daughters’ modeling careers, and buying and wearing such hot brands, it is amazing she still has the energy to dress and make herself up each day. Yet, each day there she is – smiling in a remarkable outfit, perfect eyebrows and lips, and stiletto heels. Are you beginning to see why Johnny’s blog falls into the “Supermom” collection? I aspire to one day have it as together as she does.
Blake of Blake Von D is an excellent accessorizing inspiration and ALWAYS on-trend. Her style is fierce and sophisticated. I rocked some similar outfits pre-children and, when looking to feel a bit more like myself and less like a “mom,” I read Blake Von D for mostly mom-friendly ideas on just how to do that. A young law school student and style blogger, Blake is passionate about “the empowering of women in all their various walks of life,” a message The Mommy Stylist agrees with 100%.

There’s a difference between getting dressed and dressing. The former is about simply covering the body while the latter is actually giving some thought to how you want to look. If that sounds like too much work, it’s not. In fact, it can all be accomplished with one word: accessorizing.
The frame analogy
Think of a picture with a basic, utilitarian frame. It’s fine but feels a bit drab, like the frame was an afterthought or like you really didn’t care much about it. However, if you pair it with a more dynamic frame the picture will actually look better. That’s what accessorizing does.
You’ll feel better about yourself
Just adding one interesting item to an outfit can make all the difference. It shows that instead of getting dressed in a stupor (which we all do once in a while) you actually took a moment (and that’s all it takes – a moment) to consider how you wanted to present yourself to the world that day. Simply “getting dressed” can appear sloppy but add a cool scarf or interesting belt and suddenly your present an image of self-love. Why? Because we know when we look sloppy, and we don’t like it. But when we feel put-together, even in a casual situation, we tend to stand taller, laugh more and exude confidence. We are taking care of ourselves – and we’re proud of ourselves for doing that.
Once you have a few key accessories in your arsenal you’ll be able to throw one or two on with any regular ‘ol mundane outfit and suddenly feel transformed.
What kind of accessories do I need?
In the photo above we’ve singled out some basic items that will help you accessorize quickly and easily. Try to put at least one interesting accessory on whenever you get dressed. A tiny pair of stud earrings won’t cut it though. An accessory doesn’t have to be a statement piece but it does need to be noticeable and add interest.
In the coming weeks we’ll be doing a “How To: Accessorize” post so if you need a little inspiration be sure to check back (or sign up for an email subscription on the top right-hand side of this page).
Now, let’s shop!

Each year I set a fashion goal for myself. Four years ago, I decided to confidently dress my maternity and post-baby body. Three years ago I created my personal style board in Power Point. (Today, I use Pinterest.) Two years ago I started incorporating color into my wardrobe. Last year, I set about getting comfortable mixing patterns and adding texture to my outfits. Each progressive year I found that not only was I attaining my goals, I was starting to feel happier and more like myself.
Setting a fashion goal can have long-lasting impact. Over time, you’ll figure out which styles work best with your particular shape; what colors, cuts, and patterns make you feel prettier and more confident; and the best ways to spend your wardrobe budget without wasting money on items that aren’t flattering or don’t make you feel good. Unlike that “I will lose 20 pounds this year!” goal we all spout off and few achieve, a fashion goal is easily attainable. You’ve already taken the first step by reading The Mommy Stylist, so why not put what you’ve learned into practice? Consciously decide to dress better; you will learn and adapt almost without noticing.
If looking thinner is your goal, please borrow my resolution: “This year, I will learn how to dress for my body type because it will help me feel better about the way I look – whether weight loss happens or not.” Now, there’s a goal worth achieving!

We hope you enjoy this TMS Replay of an article we posted a little while back. It offers some cute ways to wear leggings in case you’ve already hit the holiday goodies a bit too much, or if you plan to today, or in the coming week. With leggings you can have it all – comfort and style. Enjoy!
Let’s face it, moms need freedom of movement. We are always chasing children, picking up the house, getting in and out of the car, and running errands. All I can say is, thank goodness leggings have come back into our lives. Leggings wear well under airy tops, sweaters, and dresses making them a fabulous all-weather option and helping you stretch your wardrobe budget. They also hide white un-tan legs or, gasp!, unshaven legs, even cellulite. For something that seems so simple, the myriad of styles available can be a tricky beast, if you aren’t aware of a few guidelines. Here is a quick reference to help you pick the best pair for you.
ALWAYS cover the crotch! Most leggings create an awful camel toe. Not flattering. Cover it with a long top.
Inspect the opaqueness. When trying on leggings, wear your brightest pair of undies and bend over. Can you see through? Translucency does not necessarily rule out a pair of leggings, but it is important to know when putting together outfits. Again, we’re big fans of the Wunder Under Pant ($82) from Lululemon for a fitted, opaque legging with a wide waistband which eliminates muffin top and a hidden pocket for cards and keys.
Know your body. Do the leggings make your thighs or stomach look bulgy or lumpy? Try a different style or wear them with a top that skims over those areas.
Layer, layer, layer. The most fabulous legging get-ups layer a long shirt or dress with a jacket or sweater, and then add a statement scarf or necklace.
An excellent reference when putting together real-life outfits is Pinterest.com. I’ve put together a board on The Mommy Stylist Pinterest page with outfit ideas featuring leggings. There, you’ll find the images above and some additional resources. A quick scroll-through is sure to turn up an ensemble easily put-together with some items currently in your closet. Click on over and take a look around. Now, you’re ready to style those comfortable, stretchy leggings and get on with your flexibility-requiring life.

Blazer ($138.00/Anthropologie) Add this sparkly blazer to a basic, tomboy look for instant glam. Switch out for the blazer in this look, or this one during warmer months and you are ready for a night out.

In my world, there’s nothing much better than gift-giving. I happily shop all year long to find just the right thing for each person on my list, always making an effort to get something they want but won’t spend the money on (i.e. a splurge item or unnecessary/just for fun item). That’s why the ideas below will bring both the giver and the receiver joy – they’re cost-effective for you but extra special to a mom who rarely spends a cent on herself.
Organic Soap Gift Set ($36/Amazon – free shipping!): These organic soaps are just what mom needs to feel pampered each and every morning. (And yes, they are more than $30 but shipping is free so we figured it would all even out.)
Butter London Nail Lacquer ($15/Amazon or Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): A mom would rarely spend $15 on nail polish but why not help her indulge a bit with one or two bottles in any of Butter’s luscious colors. Most of their shades are “three free” which means they don’t contain the top three toxic chemicals used in most polishes. Want to help make her manicure last? Find out how here.
Clipa Purse/Bag Hanger ($22.50/Amazon): I am in love with my Clipa. It not only has a sleek, simple design but it is the strongest purse holder I have ever had. Even better, it opens wide enough to accommodate almost any table thickness. They come in a variety of colors and styles so you can pick just the right one to match your BFF’s personality.
Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment ($22.50/Amazon or Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): I am also in love with my Fresh Lip Treatment, the smoothest, creamiest lip balm your pout will ever have the pleasure of wearing. It comes in several tints that provide the perfect hint of color for everyday wear. Although the price is high for what it is, you won’t be wasting your money. Not only is it long-lasting but your bestie will feel pampered every time she uses it. Plus, she can kiss those baby cheeks to her heart’s content because it doesn’t have any pesky chemicals in it – no parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, phthalates, GMOs or triclosan. Hurray!
Lifestyle Awareness Teas ($6-$10/Amazon): These organic teas have gotten some pretty great reviews. With varieties that can help with stress, sleep, and immunity, they’re perfect for a busy mom.
Pearhead Canvas Handprint Wall Art Set ($17.99/Amazon): How cute is this? And it isn’t just for little ones. Kids of any age can take part in creating personalized artwork the whole family will treasure for a lifetime. Also available in blue.

Don’t dread those upcoming holiday parties because you have nothing to wear. We’ve found some pretty dresses (and one jumpsuit) for each of the various body types at reasonable price points. The best part though is that they can all be worn again; each is perfectly appropriate for a wedding or dressy event any time of year.
With all the sales going on right now be sure to check each store’s website before making your purchase to see if there are any additional discounts available. They usually show these deals on a banner at the top of the page or on the home page.

Now that you have taken the time to create a style board and identify your personal style, the next step is to put it to use. Evolving your style board into a personal lookbook (a collection of photographs displaying a collection of clothing) will allow you to easily put together outfits at a glance.
The first step is to take an outfit that you like from your style board and break it down into pieces you already have or can easily acquire. See the image above for an example from my collection. Note that I have labeled each piece with a note that reminds me of a specific item in my wardrobe. Now, any time I want to wear this outfit, I can go to my closet and pull out these exact pieces, knowing that I will look just as put-together as the woman in the image.
Once you’ve marked out the pieces, wear the outfit. If you like it, move on to step three.
There are many ways to keep track of the outfits that work best for you.
Option 1: Anytime you wear or see an outfit that you love, write down the pieces of the outfit in a notebook. The wording can be as simple as that in the image above, as long as it calls to mind the same necklace every time you read the phrase “vintage necklace from Grandma.” Eventually, you’ll have a whole list of outfits to select at a glance.
Option 2: Do exactly what I did in the image above with several of the images from your style board. Chances are there are reasons you like each outfit. They may have similar pieces to what’s already in your closet, the style or color may suit you, etc. Once you have an assortment of possible outfits, you will have a visual guide to dressing yourself fashionably each day.
Option 3: Whenever you wear one of the outfits from your style board or any other outfit you feel good in, pull out your cell phone or digital camera and snap a selfie. Save it in a file on your computer, post it on your blog, to a private album on Facebook, or anywhere you can easily reference it when getting dressed for the day.
When I was younger, I couldn’t wait for the day my wardrobe could be suped up like Cher’s in Clueless (see below). Real life hasn’t quite turned out that way, but having my own personal lookbook is pretty close. Mine is a combination of pictures like the one above and images of myself in the outfits I feel most confident in, with notes calling out each piece from my wardrobe.
If you haven’t begun creating a style board yet, now is the time to start. In January, we will ask you to share your personal style board for a chance to win an online styling session with The Mommy Stylist.

Recently, we’ve had several requests asking which wardrobe items a mom should splurge on. Fortunately, lower-cost items are looking pretty good and lasting surprisingly long these days so there really aren’t too many pieces that require an investment. But, the few that do are things we can’t live without because, simply put, they protect us from the elements and keep us from being over-exposed. Think winter coats, winter boots, raincoats, bras and swimsuits.
Winter coats and boots
When it comes to protecting yourself from cold, wet, snowy weather, there’s no skimping. Depending on where you live, more or less coverage may be required, but regardless, quality is of utmost importance. Check out these still stylish, but totally wearable, coats and boots:
Faux-shearling coat ($150/Topshop – free shipping both ways!): I had a coat like this for years and it was incredibly warm. I also got compliments every time I wore it. Try it over a dress for the company holiday party or with jeans to the school holiday concert.
Sorel wedge boot ($239.95/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): I don’t have these boots but I want them BAD. The reviews are stellar – comfortable, no slipping, grips the ground, etc. And they’re soooo stylish. Plus, the hidden wedge gives those of use who are vertically-challenged at lift. Available in alternate colors.
Tahari wool blend coat (was $400, now $135/Neiman Marcus Last Call): The gorgeous color of this coat will brighten even the dreariest winter day.The funnel neck, gold buttons and belt give it style. Also available in black.
Black and khaki woolen parka ($220/River Island): It’s hard to find stylish parkas but we love this two-tone version from River Island.
Grey and khaki quilted parka ($198/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): Another coat that manages to combine fashion and function – a rare occurrence in the parka world.
Sorel Conquest Carly boot ($153-$220/Amazon): I want these boots too! When it’s time to pull out the big guns you don’t have to sacrifice fashion. They’re super cool and got some great reviews. Available in alternate colors.
Raincoats, bras and swimsuits, oh my!

Like winter coats, a good raincoat will be well worth the cost. Staying dry will not only keep colds at bay but also help you to maintain your composure while packing the car in a downpour after a muddy football practice.
Now, let’s talk bras. Contrary to what many think, what you wear underneath your clothes is vital to how you look. See my shameless post here that shows you how a good bra can make you look slimmer and perkier. The same goes for the sports bra which, like the everyday bra, goes through a lot of wear and tear. Additionally, sports bras need to be able to survive frequent washing so one that is well-made is an absolute must. (Correct washing and drying is vital to the life of a bra. Machine wash in a lingerie bag and air dry. Putting them in the dryer will ruin the elastic – quickly.)
And that brings us to swimsuits which have many of the same requirements. They must also retain their shape, stitching, elasticity and coverage. If any one of these fail, we’re in trouble. So anything less than the best is not an option. When you’re practically naked in public, it pays to spend more.
Leopard print raincoat (was $200, now $129.90/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): Leopard print is always fashionable and sophisticated. It never goes out of style.
Happy Rainy Days short trench coat ($189/Amazon): A cute take on the classic trench. Love that the hood is removable. Available in 11 different colors/patterns.
Happy Rainy Days long raincoat ($189/Amazon): A long raincoat will help keep legs dry and warm. Available in alternate colors.
Natori Yogi convertable bra ($66/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): Say goodbye to uni-boob with this Natori sports bra. I have one and I love it! I can throw a shirt over it after working out and run errands without looking like I have a football on my chest. Available in alternate colors.
Chantelle t-shirt bra ($69/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): Sure, lacy bras are sexy but for everyday a woman needs a bra that is smooth and won’t show lumps or bumps under her shirt. Available in alternate colors.
Miraclesuit Rialto swimsuit ($174/Nordstrom – free shipping both ways!): There’s nothing like a Miraclesuit to hold you in and lift you up. Think Spanx in a bathing suit. I am in love with mine and even feel, dare I say, confident in it.

Here at The Mommy Stylist we take Thanksgiving seriously – which means we also take dressing for Thanksgiving seriously. After all, we want to enjoy the day and its culinary delights without having to sacrifice comfort or style. So, to create the perfect turkey day ensemble we must adhere to some strict criteria. Here are the questions we asked ourselves to make sure our outfit would be just right for all you moms out there:
1. Does this outfit allow for an expanding waistline? Let’s not deny that we’re going to eat too much, let’s embrace it by cunningly camouflaging any evidence. This leaves out any type of fitted garment or pants/skirts with non-stretchy waistlines.
2. Is there anything that will dangle into a hot pot or catch under feet while bending over to get something out of the oven? Working in the kitchen limits an outfit’s move-ability. We’ve got to deal with water, heat, reaching into cabinets, etc. so no maxi skirts or dangling necklaces.
3. Are there enough layers to account for varying temperatures? Can each layer stand on its own? Nothing creates sweat like working in a hot kitchen or mingling in a crowded room. But later, when evening sets in and the dishes are done you may feel that autumn chill. Therefore, one layer just won’t cut it. Your outfit must be able to handle temperature extremes. A sweater over a button-down fits the bill. Just be sure that the shirt underneath it is long enough to cover your lady bits (front and back) when you take the sweater off. Easy trick: Buy your shirt in “tall” for some added length. If you’d like even more coverage, tie said sweater around your waist for an instant peplum effect.
4. Will a mom be able to sit on the floor and play games without flashing anyone? Pants must be stretchy and comfortable. No low-rise pants or short skirts.
5. Is the outfit it stain-resistant? No whites, beiges or pastels allowed. But it isn’t necessary to go for the Goth look either. Color is a viable option. If you have younger (i.e. messier) kids around, you may opt for a darker shade than we have here. But, just in case, wear an apron when helping out in the kitchen and have a Tide to Go stick in on hand.
6. Can it be worn again? As a woman on a budget I am always thinking about how much use I can get out of an outfit. All of these items are versatile and functional enough to go almost anywhere – from a school setting to a business setting to a party setting.
Creating an outfit with that kind of criteria can be daunting but we’ve managed to locate some key pieces that will keep your tummy hidden, your temperature just right and your style on-trend. Happy eating!
Knit Sweater ($29.95/H&M): Love the color, love the length, love the versatility.
Apron ($34.22/Etsy): Keep covered, look cute and make an important statement.
Gingham Button-Down (was $54.95, now $37.99/The Gap – free shipping over $50, free returns): Order this shirt in “tall” so that it will be long enough to wear with leggings. (There aren’t many left though so here is an alternative also available in tall sizes.) Also, tie the sweater around your waist for a little more coverage. Pull the collar out, push up the sweater sleeves a bit and roll up the shirt sleeves like this.
Patent Handbag (was $59.99/Express): Don’t fear the light color; patent easily wipes clean. And this neutral shade will work with any outfit or in any season.
Faux Suede Trousers ($79.90/Zara – free shipping both ways!): These pants have an elastic waistband – the better to eat food with!
Tall Boot ($88/Express – free returns!): Again, it’s the holidays! Throw on a pair of heels and make the day special. The thick heel on this boot will add comfort and stability.
Tide to Go ($6.89 for pack of three/Target): Get the three-pack and put one in your car, purse and/or diaper bag. As I said above, don’t waste your money on one of those cheaper no-name-brand versions; they don’t work. I speak from experience.
Booties ($44.99/Target): I’m going to buy these for the price, thick (comfy) heel and cool factor.
Layering is creative way to add interest (and warmth!) to an outfit, a lethal fashion combination for the fall and winter seasons. Even better is that when done correctly, layers can be slimming – whether you want to emphasize a tiny waist or pull the eye away from problem areas like the thighs and stomach. What’s not to love?
The Secret to Chic Casual Layers
Always start with three.
Three key pieces on the top half of the body is all it takes to look effortlessly put-together. Oddly enough, two just doesn’t work; it always feels like like something is missing. Notice that all of the outfits in the image above (pulled from the How to Wear: Layers Pinterest board) have three distinct layers.
From left:
Oversized T-shirt + structured wool coat + scarf
Lacy dress + faux leather moto jacket + scarf
Button down + faux fur vest + scarf
Textured knit sweater + blazer + scarf
One more secret: Vary the lengths of the layers. This will elongate the body and add visual interest. If all of the pieces hit at exactly the same place, the look can come off as bulky or messy.
Use Texture and Pattern to Add Interest
When starting out, an easy way to create layers that work well together is to choose a neutral color pallet and just add texture. For example, try a black cami under a black lace racerback tank and a black open-front cardigan (all in varying lengths). Another simple option is to add layers in different shades of the same hue.
Once comfortable with the monochromatic approach, be daring and try using pieces with color and pattern. View our article on Mixing Color and Pattern for some ideas.
The Next Step
Mastered the basic three-layer look? Feel free take it further but remember not to overdo it. Try four layers, or even five. If you fear you’ve gone overboard, keep Coco Chanel’s advice in mind: “When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.” Although it’s not necessary to always take this literally, it’s helpful to keep in mind.
Lastly, try adding layers to the bottom half of your body.

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but they aren’t very helpful when you’ve got to run out the door at a moment’s notice. Maybe the carpool mom just called to say she’s sick and can’t take the kids to school. Perhaps you thought basketball tryouts were tomorrow, not today – in 15 minutes. Throwing on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt is easy enough but what to do with your hair? It’s in need of a wash and going every which way. You’re sure to see other moms at school, and as long as you’re out it would make sense to get some errands done, but there’s barely enough time to run a brush through it. Enter a girl’s other BFF – the hat.
Don’t be afraid of hats!
The best thing about hats is that they aren’t just easy cover ups for bad hair days, they’re actually uber-stylish. And because many people are afraid of wearing them, you’ll look confident and put-together when you don one. Never get caught looking embarrassingly bad again. Even if your outfit is nothing special, a fashionable hat will make your whole ensemble infinitely cuter.
Don’t skip the men’s department
Don’t be afraid to look in men’s stores/departments for hats, even at places like Target. Just because they say they’re for men doesn’t mean they have to be. I own quite a few men’s hats. And don’t fret if they are too big; just add some hat filler for a quick and inexpensive fix.
How to wear them
Wearing a hat is easy. You just need to know what’s on trend and the proper placement of each style. Check out the photos below for some great hat deals and outfit inspiration. And be sure to peruse our “How To Wear: Hats” Pinterest page for even more ways to rock them.

Halloween is just around the corner. As a mom, you’ll probably be participating in activities like trick-or-treating and school costume parties. You want to feel festive and acknowledge that this isn’t just another day but being able to function is of utmost importance. So, how do you pull it off? Easy. Utilize pieces that can be worn again in everyday life.
Skip the Costume Stores
One trip to the Halloween store will make it clear that mass-market costumes these days are for skin-baring model types with giant boobs. And let’s not forget the inflated price tag on that slapped together bit of tulle. If you’re comfortable slipping into a tutu that barely covers your butt, lucky you. But, most moms don’t have the same body as the teenage model on the costume package cover. Fear not, there is a simple and affordable solution.
Turn everyday clothes into a costume
Skip the novelty store costume made for a 20-year-old and opt for a grown up, covered-up, and stylish choice. Instead of spending all that money on something you’ll never wear again, spend it on something you will. And don’t forget to make it special with some fun accessories.
We’ve put together one example to get your creative juices flowing. Turn yourself into an adorable doe by layering colors and textures reminiscent of a fawn’s coat. Not only will all those layers create visual interest, they’ll keep you warm. Start with fleece-lined tights and a creamy beige lace dress. Next, add a coffee and cream polka dot button up, a pullover in oatmeal, and a faux fur vest. Flat boots will keep feet warm and dry in the damp October weather, and provide comfort while trekking through the neighborhood. Complete the look with an antler headband and, if you have time and are feeling adventurous, apply some deer-inspired face makeup (we love this cool, modern take on it). Voila- DIY costume made almost completely out of clothing you can utilize throughout the cold weather season, separately or together.

1. Polka dot button up ($29.71 + free shipping/Amazon)The dots on this button up are reminiscent of the spots on a deer’s coat. The lace details at the collar and pocket give it a little extra something. Wear it again: to work, with jeans and a jersey blazer for a casual look.
2. Pullover sweater ($29.99/Banana Republic) This versatile pullover will be a welcome addition to your fall and winter wardrobe. Wear it again: over a denim (or any) button up, with the lace dress.
4. Antler headband ($16/ETSY) At just $16, these pretty antlers will help keep your costume budget to a minimum. Or, if you have more money to spend, try this artsy pair for $50. Use it again: next Halloween, add them to the children’s dress-up clothes.
5. Brown fleece lined tights ($19.99 + free prime shipping/Amazon) Very warm and soft, fleece-lined tights can be tricky; they don’t all stretch and fit the same way nylon stockings do. Try a few pairs to make sure they fit so you won’t be adjusting them all day.
6. Lace dress, beige ($18.55 + free shipping/Amazon) I love the texture on this lace dress. I have a very similar style in navy. I layer a pullover and blazer over it and add fleece-lined stockings and ankle boots for a business casual look. Wear it again: to work, date, night out.
8.Monster clutch ($28.43 + free shipping/ASOS)It’s Halloween so have some fun and throw in a cute monster clutch to gobble up all the good trick-or-treating candy. Your kids won’t mind sharing if it means they get to “feed” the monster. Mwa-ha-ha. More candy for mommy!

When I first heard about OneClique shoes I was leery. Really, I can switch the tops and bottoms of my shoes to create my own styles? And save money by not having to buy dozens of shoes to have all the styles I want? And a portion of my purchase will go towards the Kind Campaign, “a nationwide movement that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl bullying?” Too good to be true? I thought so too – until the company sent me several pairs to check out.
As good as they seem
At first glance the shoes looked well-made and were on-trend. Quality? Check. Style? Check. I wondered though, if the “click” switch which sits on the inside base of the shoe, would feel funny or cause pain. It didn’t. Then I wondered how hard it was to actually click different tops and bottoms together. Answer: Not hard at all. In fact, easy. It took seconds. Once my “inspection” was complete the fun began!
Create your own style without breaking the bank
I was like a kid in a candy store, or should I say, a female in a shoe store. I could have spent hours mixing and matching the pieces. With four bottom styles that each come in several colors and five upper styles (also available in a variety of hues) the possibilities are endless. It’s not only fun but practical – tops and bottoms range from $44-$54 each. With a fair and easy return process, OneClique may be just what moms have been looking for.

It’s that time of year again. Fall is in the air and the Pantone color report for autumn 2014 is in. (Pantone is a color forecasting company that holds a bi-annual “secret meeting of representatives from various nations’ color standards groups” to choose a color of the year (2014 = Radiant Orchid) and the colors that will dominate home decor and wardrobes each autumn and spring. See all of the fall 2014 hues in the photo above.) Clothing and accessories in the season’s hottest colors are now hitting the racks. How should you spend your wardrobe budget?
The Staples
This year there are a lot of staples in the selection (colors that are repeated year after year). Shades of grey (Aluminum and Sea Fog), blue (Royal and Cobalt), and brown (Cognac) are plentiful, and may already be in your closet. Before pulling out the debit card, check to see what you have.
An item in Carafe from Fall 2013 may pass for Cognac. There’s no need to run out and buy an Aluminum colored sweater if you already have one in a similar hue (perhaps Paloma from Spring 2014). Instead, save that money for some of the trendier shades.
That being said, if you do spot an amazing piece that you will want to wear for years – go for it! These are staple colors that work with most complexions, wardrobes and personalities. You can even splurge a bit, feeling secure that you will want to use that fabulous cross body bag often in the years to come.
The Flatterers
The next range of colorsare the flattering hues. If you love them and they look good on you, feel free to purchase. They won’t be shunned from fall fashion altogether however, they tend to cycle in and out of style more often than the staples.
Colors in this category include Cypress and Aurora Red. Although Cypress itself may not appear in stores each fall, it often compliments the other colors in the array. Aurora Red doesn’t suit everyone, but a watch in this color is a statement piece most can pull off. Or, go bold with a red dress to give off an air of confidence and power.
The Trendy
Autumn’s trendy colors include Misted Yellow, Mauve Mist, and Sangria. Yellow is a tricky color; it looks amazing on darker skin tones but if that isn’t you, choose an accessory in the shade instead. Making a comeback is Mauve, a soft pastel that looks great with almost any neutral. Lastly, there’s sangria, a lovely blend of red and purple.
All three are big hits this season, and are unlikely to remain popular for long so shop for them at inexpensive stores like Target, Forever 21 and H&M. Then, next year when the trend has come and gone, you won’t feel bad for having spent a lot of money on them.
