Now that The Mommy Stylist has been around for several years, we’ve decided to start re-posting some of our favorite blogs each Monday so that new readers can benefit from them as well. (And they can serve as reminders for those who have been with us from the beginning.) While some of the items may no longer be available, we wouldn’t post anything that’s out of style, so use them for reference and keep an eye out for something similar when you’re out and about. Enjoy!

For school holiday events you want to look classy and sophisticated but also, festive – without going over the top. I’ve shown two options for the same outfit in this post – the one on the left is more conservative (but still stylish) and the other is more bold. Be careful with sequins because they can easily look cheap. If you question the quality at all, don’t get it.

I love the unexpected use of the khaki-colored pants but if it’s not your thing, you can swap them out for a pair of black pants, or even jeans. The blazer and jewelry work with both outfits, as do the flats. It’s a fun time of year though, make it a little special by wearing heels if you can. I’ve chosen both of these with moms in mind. Wedges are easy to walk in and are often comfortable. They aren’t as high as they look because of the platform in the front. The bootie has a thick heel which makes them much easier to walk in. All three pairs of shoes will be a useful investment as they’ll go with a million different outfits.

You’re probably wondering what kind of coat you should wear with this ensemble. I have a black wool ruana (cape-type piece) that’s been my go-to coat for years. It always looks chic no matter what I’m wearing underneath. Check these out from Nordstrom.

Outfit on left:

Calvin Klein Sequin Front Tank ($50/Nordstrom)

Trousers With Zip Hem ($60/Zara)

Black Wedges with Gold Strip ($35/H&M)

Liz Claiborne “Queen V” Satchel (reg. $70, now $35/JC Penney)

Outfit on right:

Sequin Striped Tank ($20/Forever 21)

Trousers With Zip Hem ($60/Zara)

Black Thick-Heel Booties ($70/H&M)

Purse with Color Block Detail ($63/ASOS)

Pieces that work with both outfits:

Black Swing Baby Silk Jacket (reg. $69, now $49/Dorothy Perkins): If you have large breasts, try a more fitted jacket like this one.

Beaded French Wire Earrings ($4/Forever 21)

Patent Band Sueded Flat ($19/Charlotte Russe)

Gold Shakey Ring ($14/Target)
